My older neighbor was recently diagnosed with an aggressive cancer, for the second time in the past several years. She's currently undergoing radiation and chemo treatments, so she's lost all of her beautiful hair. I do what I can to look in on her and her family, but most importantly I pray. A coworker of mine suggested I reach out to the Knots of Love organization to see if I could get a beanie for her. OH HOW GLAD I am that I did! One email beanie request led to Mrs. B. receiving a cozy comforting warm knot of love! God bless you all the more Christine F. for being a blessing to so many others. Thank you again!

After losing my hair due to chemo, I found their website and submitted a request. I got an almost immediate response. I corresponded with Christine a couple of times and within days received 3 beautiful handmade beanies in my favorite colors. I'm wearing one as I write this. They are soft and warm and comfortable on my head. This is a wonderful organization of caring crafters who selflessly help people in some of their most difficult times. Thank you so much.

This company/non profit group has set a standard for all other companies.
They stay on top of their clients wants and needs. Just this morning I got a call about colors etc on a future new cancer surviver.
They have people who go above standard in design.

I found this wonderful charity while looking for hats for my husband. He has stage 3b adinocarcinoma lung. Also got shingles. His head and face ate extremely painful to touch. Knots of Love sent not one but two beautiful hand made soft hats for him! The hats arrived two days after I contacted Christine! I even got to choose the color. They were made a bit larger by request so as not to hurt his head. He was so surprised and he wore a hat right away! Thanks for helping him Knots of Love!

I have found Knots of Love to be a loving, caring nonprofit organization that reaches out to those in need of a little warmth and love at a very venerable time of their lives. It is a privilege to be associated with all its dedicated volunteers who turn out beautiful handmade items under the watchful and caring guidance of its founder and director extraordinaire, Christine Fabiani. I go to sleep with a smile on my face each night picturing the premee blankets I made tucked around those precious bundles. Knots of Love and the work they do is a mission of love to all associated with it.

I ran across Knots of Love purely by accident. I have been battling lung cancer for over three years now. My latest treatment caused me to lose my hair. I placed a request for beanies and received an answer the same day and the beanies were shipped to me. I received three beautiful, soft and warm beanies. No more freezing because I have no hair. I thank them from the bottom of my heart and will spread the word at my oncology center.

In August I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma that is hers 2 positive. I had a partial mastectomy and now am going to start chemo. I feel like losing my hair is scarier than the surgery was. I decided to search for chemo patient headwear. When I came across the Knots of Love site I sent an email asking how I could obtain a beanie and almost immediately got an email from Christine. She was so kind and friendly and made me feel welcome. I can’t tell you what such kindness means when going through such difficult times. She sent me an email saying that my package was on the way same day. I can’t wait to get the package. I am so thankful for the support and kindness shown by this organization.

I wish it were possible to give more than 5 stars. I found Knots of Love through a newsletter. I have Multiple Myeloma and will be getting a stem cell transplant soon. My treatments for the past year haven't caused hair loss but the melphalan I will receive 100% will. I reached out to Knots of Love and received an immediate response. I mean Immediate. Christine was so kind and gracious in her reply and my hat (I thought just 1) was in the mail. We chatted a little bit more and I ended up ordering a couple of books that were also sent the same day. Well, the hats (yes, multiple) arrived today and they are just absolutely beautiful. They are so soft and cozy - even a sleep hat. I feel so much love and appreciation for the lovely humans that created these beautiful beanies for me to wear. They have a QR code attached that took me to a page with just lovely quotes and the story of the hats. I am just absolutely awestruck with the love and compassion that I feel flooding me right now. This is going to be a very difficult process and knowing that there are absolute strangers that take their precious time to share love with others just brings tears to my eyes. I am so blessed. Thank you, Knots of Love, Christine and those who give of themselves so sweetly. Cheryl

Last year at this time I was diagnosed with a particularly aggressive form of endometrial cancer. With a positive attitude, faith in a higher power, the support of family, friends, I powered through a total hysterectomy and 5 months of chemo. My hair is now growing back and, unfortunately, I just learned the cancer is now in my bones. I’m doing my best to gear up for more intensive treatments to beat this again. I wore my Knots of Love hats daily and am grateful for your service to the rest of us.

Unbelievable! I found Knots of Love while searching for chemotherapy hat patterns to knit for my sister-in-law who is undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma and will lose her hair next week. I could not believe the lovely free patterns that were available to me and the suggestion of yarns to use. Sunday night I was searching the Knots of Love website looking for a different pattern than the one I was already knitting when I noticed the offer of sending us a free beanie. Wow, so sweet an offer to help me so I sent a request - why not?! First thing Monday morning I received an e-mail asking me her favorite colors, head size, etc. Within a short time, I was sent a second e-mail telling me the package of beanies (yes, plural) was on its way with a tracking number! Yesterday, just two days later, there it was at my door. I opened the package and could not believe my eyes. The quality of the three (yes, three) beanies, presentation, labeling, and personal note is top-notch. Tears came thinking someone would be willing to donate so generously to us! After always being the one giving it is quite a different experience receiving. Last night the beanies were washed and are ready to take along with the tags and note to her when we visit her at UW Hospital this weekend. Such a heartwarming experience.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart,

I was having a bad day... until I spoke with Christine at Knots of Love. I was diagnosed with cancer, underwent surgery, and started chemo. I was doing well, but I had buzzed my hair the night before because my scalp was hurting and my hair was falling out. The oncologist had told me I'd lose my hair but even though I thought I was prepared, and my family was wonderfully supportive, seeing myself in the mirror was traumatic. Searching the internet for a hat, I was finding it both expensive and exhausting. I called Knots of Love not even sure anyone would ever call back. Within a couple of hours Christine not only called back but she hand picked wonderful hats she described with the thoughtfulness and kindness of an angel. She truly made my day!!! Knots of Love provided an adorable beanie for my newborn! I had a
traumatic delivery of a very big baby (11 pounds, 4 ounces!) that resulted in a fourth-degree tear and required a blood transfusion. Additionally, my baby had low glucose levels that kept us in the hospital for an extended stay. The beanie made for one less thing I had to worry about, and I was so grateful. We're both home now and doing well, but I still keep the beanie on hand for colder nights. :)

I have been knitting beanies for Knots of Love since 2010 and have donated approximately 450 so far. With each shipment I send, founder Christine personally calls to thank me and let me know where the hats have been shipped to cancer centers and Veterans hospitals throughout the USA. My hats are currently in 47 of the 50 states.

Knots of Love has an amazing web site, which includes the approved yarns we need to use, and shares lots of different patterns. Christine frequently sends out emails sharing with us the notes and letters of thanks she receives from the recipients and staff at the facilities. It is very gratifying to know that we volunteers are adding just a little joy and comfort to these patients who are enduring so much.

I like that it gives me an outlet for my passion (addiction?), and it is something that I know will make a difference in someone's life. What I like best, however, is that the charity doesn't just say "Thank You," and leave it at that. They also send frequent updates and letters from recipients of our work.

I've been donating neo natal blankets to Knots of Love for the past 7 years. With every donation I receive a personal call thanking me for my gift. Christine Fabiani is the real deal and her tireless inspiration impacts all those she connects with whether they are cancer patients receiving hats, new mama's receiving blankets, veterans receiving hats or her teaching those in drug rehab how to knit and learn to feel valued. I am a better person for my involvement with Knots of Love.

I became aware of Knots of Love in 2019. My best friend was going through aggressive Chemo and a stem cell transplant for Multiple Myeloma. As a result, she started to lose her hair. I started looking for knitting patterns and came across KOL. I got many great patterns and tips on yarn to use. I showered my friend with Beanies to match any outfit she wore and special ones for holidays. And she loved them! During that time, I read the website updates and became more aware of what they do and the challenges they faced during the pandemic. I also read many thank you letters from recipients of their donated Beanies. When I got notices of fundraisers I always donated. And I also chose KOL for my Amazon Smile donation program. I felt a bond with them at low points as they know what cancer patients (and the people who love them) are going through and their mission to help them. This Friday, June 10th will be one year since Susie left us. Thanks to Knots of Love, I was able to make her journey a little brighter.

I first discovered knots of love when my aunt was going through cancer treatments. I wanted to knit her a hat, and was looking for patterns. I was so grateful to discover all of knots if love’s free patterns. I used the patterns to make my aunt several hats, and then made several to donate to knots of love. Knots of love does a great job of making their donors feel personally included. They send out weekly emails sharing all the thank you notes they receive. It has been a joy donating to knots of love

I wanted to do volunteer work in a hospital, but I needed to stay home during Covid. Since I know how to knit, I searched the internet and found the wonderful website, Knots of Love. I printed a pattern to knit a NICU blanket, with the instructions for buying the yarn and needles.
When I finished, I followed the directions of how to wash and mail my blanket to Knots of Love in Costa Mesa, CA. A few days later, I got a phone call from Christine, the Founder. She personally thanked me for the baby blanket, and then she told me which hospital it was being sent.
I also enjoy receiving emails from Knots of Love. There are always inspirational messages which put a smile on my face. Before you know it, I'm starting a new blanket in a different color. I have completed 4 blankets since Feb. of this year.
I am spreading the word to friends who also knit or crochet.
I am so happy I found this wonderful non-profit that I find so rewarding.
Sincerely, Mary-Grayce from NJ

I became involved with Knots of Love as a way to honor my daughter’s memory.

She passed away in 2016 after a 22 year courageous battle with brain cancer. She was 30 years old.

As a family that has spent countless hours at hospitals, doctors offices and sitting in traffic to get to these places I can attest these days can be long, tiring and stressful.

Sometimes a little gift or surprise can brighten the day. I am so happy to crochet items for Knots of Live and hopefully bring that happy surprise to someone who needs a lift to brighten their day.

I started knitting for Knots of Love several years ago. I love working with this group because they are so appreciative of everything you do. I even get a personal phone call or email from Christine every time I send in a box of hats and baby blankets. They are a super group to work with. Most of the time I donate locally so I don't have to pay postage but this is one group worth paying postage for. Also I like it that they are in So. Calif. as that's where I live as well.

Cancer is not new to my family. I wish this wonderful organization was around for my Mom and sister. I have printed the patterns and purchased the yarn so I can contribute to the kindness. I read every story sent by patients who have received the hats and blankets. This is something I , and I'm sure others , never thought of to help cancer patients and babies. Last year was my first year to donate. I had set a goal of one hat per month. I ended up sending over 30. It's a wonderful organization and they are always so thankful and encouraging.

While going through chemo, I picked up a crochet hook to try to keep my hand and mind busy. As a beginner, I found blankets were the easiest thing to make, but I couldn't think of anyone I knew who would really need a crocheted blanket. Then, while I was searching for free patterns online, I discovered Knots of Love and started making NICU blankets to donate. Knots of Love helped me through a tough time while giving me the opportunity to help someone else. Thank you, KNOTS OF LOVE!

During the COVID pandemic, I was looking for a way to volunteer from home. As a breast cancer survivor and ardent crafter, I thought Knots of Love would be just right for me. Around the same time, I learned that my neighbor was to undergo chemo treatment for breast cancer so I made her a few chemo beanies to keep her warm and cozy. Her response, which was overwhelming, convinced me that Knots of Love was the place for my volunteer efforts. Since then, I've made and gave several beanies for chemo treatment and blankets for NICU infants. The leaders at Knots of Love tell me where each one of my contributions goes and inspire me to contribute even more. Knots of Love is surely a great nonprofit!

I take my yarn and hook with me every time I go in for an infusion for my own treatment. I'm lucky, I didn't need chemotherapy or radiation, but I do need treatment for bone loss related to my cancer treatment. At my last infusion, when I saw a young lady donning a lovely crocheted hat, I commented on what an awesome pattern it was and how it highlighted her stunning blue eyes, she commented that she received if from Knots of Love. My heart melted. I love when simple acts makes me realize how small we can make our world when we share kindness and generosity. Thank you, Knots of Love, for helping me appreciate what matters!

I have been crocheting and doing crafts since I was a child. I was so delighted to learn about Knots of Love and how I can now use my love of crocheting to help someone else. I crochet beanies for people who are undergoing chemo therapy and have lost their hair. The beanies not only keep their heads warm, but also, through fun colors and styles make the patients feel good and loved.
Each order that I send to Knots of Love is received and followed up with a phone call to let me know where my beloved caps being shipped to.. Sometimes to a place where veterans will receive them or to children's hospital or cancer center. I am honored to have my beanies distributed across the country, bringing the love that I put into making the beanies onto the heads of people in need. I can only imagine all that is needed for these connections to be made by Knots of Love to keep the beanies in route to those who need them.
I am delighted to read the heartfelt letters that are shared from the recipients of the beanies from Knots of Love and the difference these beanies make to those who are suffering. Knowing that I can use my talent for the good of others is so rewarding for me as well as the service it provides for the patients. I look forward to continuing to use my skills to create more beanies and hopefully soon NICU blankets to babies in neonatal ICU incubators. I appreciate the outstanding work that Knots of Love does to make this connection between crafter and patient possible and recognize the value that this service provides.

Knots of Love is a wonderful charity, providing hand-made caps for cancer patients and blankets for tiny NICU babies. I am proud to be one of their crocheters. My family has experienced a great deal of loss the past several years. I'd been searching for a way to divert my focus and energy, particularly while staying inside due to the pandemic. Crocheting was my answer so I proceeded to research charities. Knots of Love, unlike others, does their "homework". They discuss specific needs of the patients they serve with the patients themselves, their families, and medical personal. They are very precise in terms of yarns that are softest and patterns that serve the patients appropriately. Knots of Love is gracious about promptly calling or sending a note to us stitchers expressing appreciation and providing a list of medical facilities where our handiwork was sent. They also have a marvelous e-newsletter with kind notes from recipients, new campaigns, etc.
On a personal level, my involvement with Knots of Love has given me a sense of purpose and peace.

After slowly and carefully completing my 3 first hats, I mailed them, hoping that they would be acceptable. KoL is a true charity focused on the men and women ravaged by cancer, and the tiny babies born fighting for their lives in NICUS around the country. By providing hand made gifts of beanies to cover the heads of men and women who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy, free of charge, KoL is able to help these patients heal and retain their dignity in an otherwise horrific situation. The tiny blankets made by volunteers give the parents of very sick babies the ability to cuddle them on their visits to the NICU.

KOL is an organization founded by love and almost 100% staffed by volunteers and funded solely by donations. All caps and blankets are 100% hand made by volunteers and donated for free to the organization. The volunteer staff then ships them all over the United States to cancer centers, hospitals and NICUS. I have arthritis in my hands, and I am a musician. In order to keep my fingers moving in MANY motions, other than just on the computer and at the harp, I crochet every evening while watching TV. I have made enough crochet items for myself and my friends, so now I am crocheting chemo caps to donate to Knots of Love. This was inspired by two close friends who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy. In my first batch, I made 27 crochet chemo caps. When I have another batch ready, I will send them along. It's a win-win situation; the crocheting keeps my fingers nimble and the caps help women suffering from hair loss due to cancer treatment.

Knots of Love is a great organization to donate to. The people there not only donate hats to cancer patients, but are very supportive of the people who crochet, knit, and design patterns for them. As a crochet donor, I had questions at the start. Every question was answered in a timely and helpful manner. Patterns are clear and easy to use and most are free. KOL just started selling some of their newest pattern, which is a great way to raise more money for their nonprofit.

I love to knit but you can only give away so many dishcloths. I was knitting for another chairity but discovered by accident that they were no longer accepting donations after I sent a full box of items. I discovered Knots of Love and have been extremely happy with them. I can knit a few different items, with different patterns and yarns and I get a phone call after every box is delivered. I can't stress enough how fullfilling it is to be able to continue to do something I love (knitting) and share the joy with others. Thanks Christine

I recently came across this website and fell in love with it. They allow us to help out those who are in need of warm and love through our ability to knit or crochet. It blesses my heart to be a part of this organization. I reside in North Carolina and have always enjoyed crocheting prayer shawls, blankets (NICU) and hats for those in need. May God continue to bless indeed this organization. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Back in 2013 my sister was battling lung cancer and underwent chemotherapy. During a phone conversation she mentioned that after she lost her hair her head was always cold. I got online and googled chemo caps and came across the Knots of Love’s website. I sent a message and asked how I could get a couple of the caps for my sister. They asked me what her favorite colors were and said they’d send them to her at no cost to me. Soon after I began making caps and then later some NICU blankets for the babies with cancer. It is heartwarming to know I am helping others in need. I continue supporting Knots of Love with donations of caps, blankets and money to help with shipping costs. I am forever thankful for Knots of Love. Phyllis Miller

When my sister had cancer I looked online for caps to keep her head warm and fond Knots of Love. They sent her 2 beautiful caps for free! That was 4 years ago and I’ve been making caps and baby blankets for NICU ever since. I appreciate the personal thank you phone calls from the Founder, Christine Fabiano, when my donations are received. Proud to be able to help those in need. Knots of Love helped me get through some very tough months during the pandemic. Knowing that my crocheting projects were being sent to people and babies in need made me feel so good. Christine Fabiani, founder of Knots of Love, always calls or writes notes to let me know where my projects were sent. And she always makes sure to say thanks. This is an amazing nonprofit organization that helps the recipients as much as the knitters. The mission of this organization is truly remarkable and it shows what a difference people can make in others lives especially when they are going through rough times.

My favorite part about Knots of Love is that they call me every time they receive my donations. Not only do they thank me personally but I also know which facility in the US is going to receive my NICU blankets or chemo hats!
Their kindness and willingness to help others in need is contagious. Go ahead and get your knitting needles or crochet hooks out and get started. You will love knowing that someone in need received your creation :)

I enjoy crocheting for this nonprofit organization because of the kindness they provide for cancer patients going through chemotherapy and radiation. I believe in this company and who they stand for. Nonprofit Knots of Love:

Knots of Love is an extraordinary charity, and its founder, Christine Fabiani, is an extraordinary woman. She is an inspiration to all of us who volunteer for her charity, Knots of Love. Knots of Love is a nonprofit 501 (c) 3. Christine Fabiani created Knots of Love in 2007 after knitting caps for her son’s friend. He was going through chemotherapy and losing his hair. This was an “aha” moment for Christine. She recognized the need to provide comfort to the heads and hearts of those who had lost their hair through chemotherapy or other illnesses. That was to become the goal of Christine’s charity, Knots of Love. Knots of Love was born and given life. Knots of Love has given back to the communities of cancer patients, neonatal babies, veterans, and patients of other debilitating illnesses.

I first became aware of this exceptional charity at the Orange County Fair in 2010. I approached their table and learned about the charity, the mission, and the incredible opportunity for me to give to those in need. Here was a chance to combine my love of knitting and contribute to a worthy altruistic project. I was hooked and I have been knitting caps for Knots of Love since that day. Since that first Orange County Fair encounter, I have volunteered on Friday shipping days. I am now one of the contact people on the other side of the table at the Orange County Fair. I am always recruiting people to create caps for Knots of Love. I am always searching for ways to support, fund, and perpetuate this worthy charity.

Knots of Love is a charity that gives truly from the heart. Hundreds of knitters and knotters (crochet crafters) all over the United States create adorable caps, beautiful caps, patriotic caps, and blankets for neonatal intensive care unit babies. These creations are sent to Knots of Love free of charge. Not only do volunteers create these items, they donate the entire cost of the materials and the shipping to Knots of Love headquarters. Volunteers absorb the cost that goes to the manufacturing of the caps and blankets and the mailing of them to Knots of Love. The Knots of Love makers themselves encumber those costs. Imagine people all over the United States, independently creating items to donate to Knots of Love. That is what happens and is the real story of Knots of Love. It is truly a grass roots effort. Those of us who are the creators and the donators are inspired by Christine’s message and her giving nature. We want to give, too. We want to give comfort, too. As she says, “One head, one heart at a time.”

How are all of these caps sent from all over the United States dispersed? Volunteers meet every Friday for mailing day. Ten to twelve volunteers meet at Knots of Love headquarters, which is Christine’s home, to prepare for the mailing of over 1,000 caps and NICU blankets. Caps are packed twenty to a box. That translates to over 50 boxes mailed each week. Several of these volunteers have been involved in shipping day from the onset. That is a thirteen-year commitment and dedication. These incredible volunteers are committed to keeping Knots of Love moving forward. Those involved in shipping day make sure caps are sent to infusion centers, hospitals, oncology offices, neonatal intensive care units (NICU), and veterans’ administration offices. The shipping cycle to these locations repeats every eight to ten weeks. A new set of caps is sent to those infusion centers, hospitals, oncology offices, and veterans’ administration offices because Knots of Love knows those treatment centers will have new patients needing new caps and comfort. The donation cycle repeats because the need repeats. Knots of Love has given away 498,945 caps and blankets. The half million mark should be reached within the next two weeks.

It is important to point out the ramifications of the number 498,945. Each and every person of the 498,945 has a story to tell. Each and every person has had a medical trauma that has affected their life and the lives of their loved ones. Each and every person has also been affected by Knots of Love because each and every person was a Knots of Love recipient. The magnitude of this outreach is astounding. The magnitude of Knots of Love, and its founder Christine Fabiani, is equally astounding. The testimonials from recipients support this. Weekly, Christine posts on the Knots of Love website communications from cap recipients and donation location personnel. It is humbling to read the posts and recognize the impact of our donations. The postings are also impetus for all of us to keep on knitting and knotting for Knots of Love, for Christine, and for the dear cap and blanket recipients. It is our hope, that in no small measure, we have been able to give comfort. The comfort, the esthetic, and the joy these recipients experience tell the impact of Knots of Love and the dedication of its founder, Christine Fabiani, has had.

What is also amazing is the fact that Christine personally contacts each donor to let that donor know where the donated caps went. This personal touch is the keystone of this charity and shows Christine’s commitment to giving and supporting her givers. After each of my donations, I look forward to that personal call from Christine. I love hearing where my donated caps are going. This knowledge adds to my sense of purpose, and it stimulates me to continue to contribute.

This grant would provide the much needed funding to keep Knots of Love viable. The grant would provide weekly mailing costs and packaging supply costs.

What is the community this charity serves? It is a community of everyone. It is the community of cancer patients and their families. It is the community of premature infants and their families. It is the community of veterans and their families.

It is also the community of makers. Many of the makers have become friends over the years. We meet on shipping Fridays. We volunteer at the Knots of Love table at the Orange County Fair. We come together at the annual tea, last year attended by the hundreds of makers. Some meet once a month to create caps and socialize. Every year we attend an Angels baseball game, sit together, and make caps.

Christine’s biggest challenge is to keep up the ongoing funding of the charity. The source of funding is through donations. Christine has been very clever in searching out funding sources. She has aligned the charity with Ralph’s Market and Amazon Smile. A percentage of purchases go directly to Knots of Love. She has set up a monthly donation program so individuals, such as myself, can contribute to this charity regularly.

Knots of Love is Christine’s passion, and it is also her job. She is the only employee, as director, of the charity. To say she goes beyond her “every day” job is an understatement. She lives and breathes Knots of Love 24/7.

If you can imagine one woman with a vision, and that woman takes that vision and impacts the lives of 498,945 people, then you have the vision of Christine Fabiani.

It is with great love and pride that I nominate Knots of Love as one of the Top-Rated GREATNONPROFITS,

I've been sending hats to Knots of Love with a focus on children and veterans undergoing cancer treatment.
I particularly enjoy selecting colors suggested by KOL that represent the various branches of service. The hats are distributed to veterans all over the US.
It's such a treat to get feedback on where the items have gone.
1 skein makes two beanies so the cost is a pittance compared to the value of the recipient's service.

Knots of Love helps so very many people in the hardest times of their lives. The sweet gesture of a hand made hat or neonatal baby blanket let’s people know that they are not alone. People who never meet each other are caring about each other. In this time of strife in our country thinking and caring about each other is the most important thing we need to do. I began as a Knots of Love volunteer in 2019 after reading a brief news article about a woman and her project to donate hand crocheted and knitted caps to cancer patients. Over the years, I've seen this charity grow and grow due to the enthusiasm generated by its Founder, Christine Fabiani, who has inspired the support of hundreds of knitters and crocheters across the country. The result is nearly half a million handmade caps delivered to hospitals, cancer centers, and oncologist's offices, free of charge to patients in every state in the U.S. who have endured traumatic hair loss.

As a leader of Warm Hands-Warm Hearts Knitting & Crocheting Chrisian Group, I have had many heartwarming thoughts for Knots of Love. Our group makes and donates every item that we make and Knots of Love is the one that we give most of our hats and blankets to. As we make each stitch, we say a prayer for the individual who will receive our items. Christine, founder of Knots of Love is so compassionate and loving with this organization and she personally makes a phone call or email to every individual who contributes their items. What a challenge this must be for Christine, and it is always a pleasure to hear her sweet voice. Hats off to Knots of Love!

I've been knitting caps for this unique charity for about 10 years now. Knots of Love provides loving, comforting FREE caps for people going through a crisis medical situation - usually a cancer diagnosis, but often other traumatic health or surgical challenges as well. It is very difficult to cope with serious illness, but to lose one's hair and a dignified personal appearance can be devastating. Knots of Love's beautiful handmade caps let patients know that they are loved, respected and cherished as they work through their medical challenge. Often patients are deeply moved by these gifts of caps because many in their entire lives have never had anything that was made with love especially for them. Though knitting a cap might seem like a small thing to me, I've learned to never underestimate its effect on another person in a sad and desperate situation! Knots of Love truly deserves to be rated as an outstanding nonprofit.

In the end of 2012, I had the idea to start a volunteer group at my place of employment. At the time, I was working for a large corporation and, although I loved my work and my colleagues, I felt unfulfilled. Something was missing. I thought that if I could come up with the right “cause”, I would not only feel more satisfied at work, but could help better the lives of people in need. Because of the demanding nature of my day job, I wanted to ensure that whatever volunteer work I chose, it had to be something I enjoyed and felt passionate about. A recent connection of events pointed the way. We’d recently had several baby showers at work and as usual (and as expected), I knitted a baby sweater as a gift for the mom-to-be. Whenever my handmade gifts were opened, it always resulted in a series of “oohs and ahhs” followed by a chorus of “I wish I knew how to knit.” Lightbulb! I knew that if I could find people who needed knitted goods, I already had the interest of potential volunteers to make these knitted goods.

The internet is a wonderful place. I searched and searched for just the right organization with which to affiliate. Something struck a chord when I landed on the Knots of Love page (www.knotsoflove.org). I read that it was an organization that used volunteers to hand-knit and crochet caps for people with cancer who are experiencing traumatic hair loss. The caps are distributed free of charge to hospitals and treatment centers throughout the country. The more I read, the more I realized that Knots of Love was the perfect match for my volunteer group. Thus began my connection to Christine Fabiani, the founder of Knots of Love.

Knots of Love was started by Christine Fabiani in 2007 in a spare bedroom in her family home in Newport Beach, California. Christine learned to crochet at the age of six, taught by her grandmother. Years later, a friend of Christine’s who was herself a cancer survivor, shared how uncomfortable wigs were for her and that she wished she just had a cozy cap to wear. Christine did some research of her own and discovered that at that time there were no organizations in existence whose purpose was to provide chemo caps to those in need. Seizing on the opportunity, Christine started such an organization herself. It all started with a batch of 25 caps that were made, packaged and delivered to local cancer patients who had lost their hair. The response was so gratifying that Christine reached out to family members and friends who might be interested in also knitting or crocheting caps for the cause. The more caps that were made and distributed, the more people contacted Christine conveying their need. And the more the need grew, the more volunteers showed up asking to help. By the end of the first year, over 12,000 caps had been made and distributed. And now, after almost 12 years, Knots of Love has made and distributed more than 460,000 caps to 550 distribution locations in the United States. The organization also recently began making and distributing NICU blankets and caps to babies in need. Knots of Love’s current goal is to provide 1 million caps and blankets for free.

Reaching this goal requires a lot. When I first started interacting with the Knots of Love group, I was astounded to learn exactly what was being accomplished by Christine and her volunteers given their limited resources. They examine and tag every single cap and keep a database of the 550 cancer centers and their needs. Based on these needs, the caps are packaged and shipped. All of this is done by just a handful of loyal volunteers who help pack and ship the caps. Sometimes there are special requests by cancer patients or their families for specific cap styles or colors. All of these requests are granted as well. And then, as with any volunteer organization, there’s the money – or lack of it. Over the years, I’ve learned of the organization’s constant struggle to raise enough money for the shipping of the caps. In the recent past, there have been several occasions when it seemed Knots of Love could no longer function financially. But because of the loyalty of the network of over 1,000 volunteers across the country, funds were always somehow raised to get through another month or two. In fact, my company colleagues held several fundraisers to keep Knots of Love afloat.

People frequently ask why we don’t just buy caps and send them to the patients. The answer is simple. It just wouldn’t have the same effect. When patients know that someone cared enough to take the time to knit or crochet a cap for them, it means so much more than just being given a store-bought head covering. It means people whom they’ve never even met care about them and understand their plight and most importantly, want them to survive! Every stitch in every cap is an action of pure love. Who wouldn’t want to wear pure love on their heads at the scariest time of their lives? And this is borne out by the cards and letters that Christine receives at Knots of Love. Family members write about how the caps helped their loved ones feel less embarrassed and less secluded and that they have more self-esteem. They feel less alone and really loved. If you’ve ever known anyone with cancer (and who doesn’t), you know how important it is for them to know that people are pulling for them. I’ll never forget one of the notes that Christine shared with the Knots of Love volunteers. It was from a breast cancer patient who said that losing her hair was harder for her than losing her breast. She was beyond grateful for the chemo cap given to her. Veterans have written saying how much it means to them to know that they have not been forgotten. And these same sentiments have been echoed over and over again. Men, women, children and their families and friends have all written to Christine with their stories of tragedy and their stories of hope - all of them simply grateful for a cap.

As a side note, my work with the Knots of Love organization and Christine Fabiani had quite an unexpected additional personal benefit. Throughout my interactions with my colleagues, I was regularly asked how I learned to knit and crochet. I was fortunate enough to have learned to crochet from my 6th grade teacher, Miss Klaus. She taught my entire class how to crochet as an afterschool activity. This was over 44 years ago! We were her first class in her entire teaching career. I thought it important that she know just how far-reaching her act of kindness went. And through the magic of the internet, I found her. That was the first miracle. The second miracle was that she actually remembered me. I shared my Knots of Love story with Miss Klaus and, well, to say she was thrilled is an understatement. I explained how my colleagues had rallied in support of Christine Fabiani’s Knots of Love organization. Miss Klaus shared with me that she always felt her first class did not benefit enough from her teaching because we were her first. But I reassured her that it was one of her greatest achievements because she touched more lives than she will ever know. The stars aligned for me, Miss Klaus and Christine Fabiani.

I retired from my company two years ago, but I still return regularly to lead the volunteer group I started. Only a few of these volunteers knew initially how to knit or crochet, but those who knew how taught those who didn’t and those who learned became the teachers, and so on. None of this would ever have been possible without Christine Fabiani’s passion to help others.

About a year ago I had made crocheted hat for all my family for Christmas about 30 hats total. I so enjoyed making them I continued making more hats all different sizes and patterns. I ended up with about 130 hats and wanted to donate to somewhere meaningful at least to me and couldn’t quite find the right place, so the hats sat in a bag for about a year. Then I came across Knots of Love and I felt they were just what I was looking for so I boxed all the hats up and sent them off. Within a few days I got a phone call thanking me for the hats and then Christine starting reading off all Children centers, Veteran centers and Adult care centers all across the country that she would be sending my hats, I was overwhelmed and filled with joy. This was exactly the type of place and people I was looking for!! I have even started crocheting hats for the Veterans Campaign they are having from 9/11-11/11.

This is a great charity that I am proud to be a member. Christine Fabiani calls us "family". this has been a great opportunity to give back. My granddaughter had leukemia at the age of four. Someone made her a cap after she lost her hair and now, I have the opportunity to knit caps for other people that have lost their hair. It is a great opportunity to hone my knitting skills while feeling so good about helping others. Christine always calls and lets you know where your cap went. We also knit NICU blankets; for Veterans, arm and leg sleeves for amputated limbs and picc line covers. Knitting a cap not only keeps the chemo patient warm and feeling beautiful; but it is like a big hug letting them know that someone cares about them. I remember walking into my oncologist’s office, feeling vulnerable as cancer patients do with all the unknowns of what was to come. Losing my hair, knowing I’d be completely bald. There in a basket on the table were handmade crocheted beanies made just for cancer patients made by the loving volunteers of Knots of Love. There were many vibrant colors to choose from. I felt touched by others taking their time for people like us who needed their spirits lifted during such a difficult time. At the treatment center there were beanies to choose from as well. I felt thankful to have a loving beanie to keep my head warm, knowing it was made with a thoughtful mind and a giving heart. They touch many lives, especially children too with knitted blankets for babies as well and beanies to keep childrens’ heads warm. Thank you Knots of Love, for all you do for us.

I’ve been creating items for Knit of Love for about 4 years now. I know they are contributing chemo hats all over the U.S. although I create baby blankets for NICU patients as my contribution. They have never failed to call me and let me know what states my blankets have gone to. Christine and her helpers are tireless, dedicated and wonderful people! I hope to continue to contribute for a long time.

I crochet hats for Knots of Love, a charity that is beneficial to those that donate as well as the many cancer patients that receive the donations. Knots of Love helps those of us that love to knit and crochet by providing the means to donate our creations to the many cancer centers across the country. We not only get enjoyment from our hobby, we have the opportunity to use our talents to help others going through difficult times. Our hats give the cancer patients warmth and style to help them when they suffer from hair loss. I love this charity, as it has helped provide me with a purpose in my retirement years. Knowing many people undergoing cancer therapy that have lost their hair, I also know how helpful the hats are to them. A hat from Knots of Love can brighten their day.

I have crocheted hats for Knots of Love for several years. This organization does amazing things by utilizing volunteers to knit and crochet hats for cancer patients all over the country. Knots of Love helps warm the heads of those that have lost their hair through chemo treatments, and also helps the numerous volunteers that love to knit and crochet to give them a true purpose for their creations. Knots of Love is extremely well organized, keeping track of where each of their thousands of creations are sent each week. I am honored to help out with Knots of Love.

This is the most amazing organization which I can say from experience, as a contributor and caregiver.
I have donated several caps to KnotsofLove. But the most touching part for me was seeing firsthand what these caps mean to patients. My husband was going through cancer treatment in Rochester, NY at Wilmot Cancer Center. A basket of donated caps from KnotsofLove was on the counter for patients to choose from. To see people who were up against so much, express such joy and delight over something so simple...truly touched my heart. This organization and it's leader, Christine Fabiani, deserve so much credit and recognition for all it does for so many.

Because my hair grows very quickly I have been donating it to Locks of Love, for many years. My daughter who knows this came to me one day with a pamphlet she got at her county fair. It was for Knots of Love. Laughing she said she thought I could try helping out knitting caps with some of my yarn stash. I thought she's right, even I couldn't grow enough hair for everyone, but I can knit a lot. Since then a few people who have seen me knitting, ask what am I doing. After a short explanation, more than one has said I have a friend (relative) who has one of your caps. Even though I'm sure it isn't exactly one I knitted, it makes me feel good to know that people are using and liking the products of Knots of Love.

For all the good they do, the founder has managed to keep everything very personal. Every donation of hats is acknowledged with a list of the places they have been sent either by phone or by email. Special requests for colors and sizes of beanies are quickly filled. I have been making hats for them for 9 years, and I hope to be able to support this group for as long as cancer continues to affect people's lives.

I love to knit and crochet! But, at this stage of life, I have more than enough sweaters, hats and scarves of my own. I want to keep creating for the love of the craft and learned on Facebook that I could share my work with people who are in need. Knots of Love was the first non-profit I worked with, and I love making hats for cancer patients and blankets for newborns.

Being a First Grade teacher for 45 years I have a deep and lasting love of small children.
During my time teaching there were children in my class diagnosed with cancer. There is no describing the grief their parents went through.
Not mentioned was the teacher who had a wrenched gut for the duration of the illness.
As an educator, my focus was always on the needs of the children I taught. There was a little boy named David whose only desire in school was to sweep the corridor. This he did for the duration of his time in school. He was contented to "clean out his life". Well that's what my years of learning had taught me. There is always a reason why children choose to do what they choose. I am now retired and decided to "give back" to the children who had suffered whilst in my care. Thank goodness for Knots of Love the charity I chose to support. They are a brilliant charity because they send feedback by the way of thanks.

I have been aware of Knots of Love for many years. Personally, we have been touched by donations of hats for my father who passed away from cancer. He was always so proud of his full head of gray hair well into his 80's and was so dismayed when following treatment he began losing it. Having the bright and warm cap to wear truly brightened his day. We have had the same experience with several friends who received hats as well. They may be a small token, but anything that is done to brighten someone's day that is battling cancer is awesome. Now that they are doing blankets for babies as well, it touches your heart to know the volunteers are doing this for babies they don't even know. They truly honor veterans as well by their cap donations. It's a wonderful organization and one you can trust is using your donations to better the world, one head at a time!

I have contacted Knots of Love a few times to request hats for friends and family. My requests have always been honored within days if not hours of having the hats shipped off to the recipients. And are the recipients happy - no, they are ecstatic! Going through the chemo and/or other cancer treatments is devastating enough without the loss of hair. Having a cap someone made just for them, in a color of their choosing - really brightens their spirits at a time in their life when they could use something positive in their life. Can not recommend this charity enough. It's not often you get such special treatment from a non-profit, but everyone is so nice and helpful it is a joy to work with them.

I had a wig, but those are uncomfortable, so I was looking for a simple but elegant hat. I had heard of Knots of Love and about the hats they would knit for cancer patients. I reached out to them, and lo and behold, they sent me my absolute favorite hat! I am so grateful for them. My late husband went through years of chemotherapy, radiation and a bone-marrow transplant but succumbed to Hodgkins Disease in 2000. We were both grateful for our having the financial resources to face this long challenge.

When I knit hats I think of those people who might be in different financial situations and who might not be able to pop over to a store and buy something to cover their head. Something that would bring physical warmth.

But in addition to physical warmth the knowledge that somewhere a person they don't even know is thinking of them and wishing them well.

On the evenings I craft these simple beanies I am adding a warm thought along with my stitches. I want the wearer to know that there are others out here in the world who want them to have some small element of relief and that there is a woman in the world who sends them my love in this small way.

I am so grateful to Knots of Love for giving ME this gift. It's an extraordinary experience.

Volunteering with Knots of Love has been a great experience! The charity is located in CA, and as a resident of WI, I cannot volunteer in-person. However, by donating my knitted work I still feel a part of the family.

The founder Christine follows-up with each donation with a personal phone call to thank me for my work and let me know where my pieces are being sent around the country. Moreover, she works hard to give each volunteer a personal touch with hand-written thank you cards and communicates openly and quickly either by phone or email.

To date, I've donated about 15 hand-knit pieces and almost $500. I am confident that both physical and fiscal donations are being put toward the cause to "warm the hearts and heads of those experiencing traumatic hair loss."

I started making hats for KOL at the request of my daughter. She works for Google NY and they were having a 'give back' campaign so she signed up for KOL and asked if I would help her. And although the campaign ended, I continued on.
I think she also thought that since I was a recent breast cancer survivor and also one who likes to crocket that it would be a good match. And it has!
I enjoy making the hats for those who are going through chemo. I know first hand how one feels when they no longer have any hair.
And a great shout out to Christine for this wonderful charity. I feel she really gives it her all and the personal phone calls to thank everyone and to let them know where their donations are being sent to is the icing on the cake. How many charites even bother with a thank you. Christine goes out of her way to make us all feel appreciated.

I first started knitting for Knots of Love about 6 years ago. When I retired, I was able to help out on "shipping" Fridays. What an incredible experience! First, there are caps, blankets, stump covers, NICU blankets pouring in from all over the country. Each donation comes from someone who has taken their time and talent to knit something for a total stranger. Next, the caps are sent to people who have lost their hair and are going through something no one wants to experience. And through it all come the letters......heart warming notes of thanks and gratitude from people who have received a cap. Stories of hope, stories of loss, stories of appreciation that someone cared enough and took the time to use their talents to help a stranger in need.

What makes Knots of Love unique is the continuous circle of love and kindness. Love from others being passed on to those in need. Strangers helping strangers. People actually spending time to help someone else. In todays unrest it is uplifting to know that deep down people still care. As our founder always says, "People are s-o-o-o nice." But to me, each week Knots of Love proves that we are a society that truly cares for others.

I wanted to find a charity to donate knit hats to and once I found Knots of Love I knew that they were the right place to send my creations to so they could be sent on to patients all over the country. As I found out more about them I answered a message asking for volunteers to sort and process hats at the founder's home on Friday mornings and since I was in their area I signed up to help out which has become a very rewarding and inspiring experience for the past year. I am amazed by how many different places from across the country people are making and sending in their hats, NICU blankets, picc line covers and stump covers so that we can then tag, sort and repackage them to go out every week to hospitals and a variety of cancer care centers throughout the country. The founder, Christine Fabiani personally calls everyone each week to thank them for their donations and I can tell that people are so shocked that she would take the time to call and thank them. Everything is done by volunteers so that there isn't any overhead costs that take away from the cost of shipping to get the hats where they are needed. My son and daughter-in-law saw the booth at OC Fair in 2008. They knew that I needed this. I love to help others and crochet. This great group was just what I needed. I’ve met people who got the hats free from clinics or Cancer centers. They can’t say enough about Knots. Christine along with her crew put in many hours unpacking incoming chemo hats, Veterans hats, bro natal blankets and pic covers. Then calling or texting the people to thank them and tell us where the items are going. Then they pack and send them off to the people who need them. I’m honored to crochet for those in need. A big thank you to Knots if Love for all they do !
I never leave the house without my Knots if Love yarn. There’s always time to work on hats and to help others.

I recently had someone very close to me due of breast cancer and when I saw one of their objectives was to provide chemo caps to people going through chemotherapyand hair loss, it was if God was saying “This is what you need to do to use your talents!.” I have crocheted about 10 caps for civilians and right now I am working on my 6th cap for their Veterans’ cap Drive. Anyone who can knit or crochet can be a part of their organization. They also do baby blankets for NCU premise and lap throws for nursing home residents! I emailed Knots of Love and in less than 24 hours received a personal email from Christine, the founder, asking for my relative's favorite colors and shipping information. Christine had that box of caps in the mail the next day, and the caps arrived on my relative's doorstep 2 days later at no cost to me. I have never worked with a nonprofit that responds as quickly as Knots of Love.

My 22-yr-old niece was diagnosed with stage 3 Hodgkins Lymphoma. All it took was one phone call and Knots of Love sent three beautiful, comfortable hats to my niece, free of charge. The director answered the phone herself and when she heard that my niece liked red, she offered to knit a red hat for my niece herself! The hats arrived so quickly that the director must have knit that red hat through the night and it was such an encouraging surprise for my niece. I can't say enough about how great Knots of Love is!

A few months ago I was introduced to Knots of Love. It has provided a great opportunity for me to do something I love -- crochet -- and use it to contribute in a way that brings some comfort and moments of cheer to people all over the country! And it is such a neat personal touch to get a phone call from the group's founder letting me know where my creations are going!

This is a wonderful organization whose mission is to "warm the hearts and heads of those experiencing hair loss by knitting/crocheting caps with lots of love." The 4000 caps (handmade with love by 1000 volunteers!!!) are donated and delivered to patients all across the country--free of charge!!!!--to over 500 hospitals and cancer treatment centers. The beanies provide warmth for patients who are undergoing chemo-hair loss--they also provide dignity during a particularly challenging time. Knots of Love, Inc. has over 1000 members who donate their hat-making talents to this wonderful organization. As a member of this group who crochets caps weekly, I know I am providing someone with kindness and support as they deal with the fight of their life! If you are looking for the ultimate worthwhile non-profit organization to give money to--this is definitely the one to donate funds to!
