Mission: In 1955, Lutheran seminary students formed "Kinsmen" to establish supportive one-on-one relationships with troubled young men living in Minneapolis and St. Paul, working through the Plymouth Youth Center. In 1988, Kinship of Greater Minneapolis was established as a separate, nonprofit organization.
A crisis exists among families. Children, especially inner-city youth, lack the opportunities they deserve for healthy development. We help at risk children use their God given potential through adult relationships, while providing a unique service opportunity for adults to put their faith into action.
As Christians, we are called to offer a non-judgmental response of unconditional love to the needs of hurting children and their families. Our volunteers give freely of time, talents, and love, offering these children positive role models, often preventing the need for future intervention.
My mentee and I are starting our fifth year together. It's been challenging and rewarding.
We share background together as both are in the middle of big families, our birthdays are only six days apart, and she shares my daughter's name. She and I have found we like to bake together and we have started to learn sewing. Now she's learning to drive!
Two things that have changed me are an increase in patience and learning to let go of expectations. Both of these qualities have made me a better mentor and person. I am in it for the long haul because I can't imagine not having her in my life.
