Causes: Crime & Law, Half-Way Houses for Offenders & Ex-Offenders
Mission: Kingdom life ministries (klm) is a program designed to help individuals from various backgrounds become productive members of society. Serving greater richmond, virginia, we are a spiritual based program that incorporates the 12-step way of life. We provide a safe environment for those who battle substance abuse, in order for our clients to begin their walk to recovery and living a sober life. Klm works in what used to be referred to as the worst tier of the richmond city jail (rcj) and delivers authentic peer-based recovery support services to those who battle substance abuse. Upon release, the men are met with housing, peer support, access to employment, transportation, friends and a loving/caring recovery community.
Programs: The program, both while they are in jail and also after release, incorporates spiritual principles, group therapy sessions, counseling, narcotics anonymous, alcoholic anonymous, bible study, behavior modification, fatherfood and family meetings/events. At the rcj, annually approximately 500 men participate in the program. Approximately 30 men live in the houses annually, however, several men participate on an outpatient basis.
our program combines 4 core elements: jail component, court component, re-entry preparation component, and the post-release component. Across all four components, the core elements of aa and na, spiritual principles, and behavior modification are delivered by someone successful in their recovery, which follows the peer-based model.
we follow evidence based practices:developed through years of research and evaluation, klm utilizes best practices. Models of best practice programs have been adopted from pennsylvania, connecticut, and texas. It has been proven that the most effective organizations provide programs while the individual is incarcerated, in order to 'capture their attention, and continues to provide the program upon their release. Most importantly, housing, employment, transportation, and other related items are provided to the individual upon release, so they have the tools to succeed, instead of going back to being homeless or hanging out on the same street corner as they did prior to their incarceration. Klm is one of the only programs in the area that provides all three aspects, making it unique and extremely important for our community. This research study revealed that in an almost four year period, klm saved taxpayers almost $8 million and lowered recidivism rates by 18% in comparison to the other program tier in the rcj.
