Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: We are proud to be the only cat-exclusive, free-roaming, no-kill orphanage in Alexandria, Va. We have no paid staff and rely solely on private donations. KSC has been in operation since 2003, and was previously known as The Albert Foundation for many years before becoming King Street Cats. Our mission is to provide a safe haven until forever homes can be found for the cats and kittens in our care, and to educate and assist the community in regard to cat welfare. We accomplish this through outreach to the local community by providing information on proper cat care, behavioral problems, and medical issues involving cats. We also assist local residents in locating and retrieving lost cats, and assist individuals through the cat adoption process. We promote spaying and neutering and all our cats and kittens are sterilized and fully up-to-date on vaccinations prior to adoption. We also provide post-adoption support for adopters and anyone else that needs cat care advice. Because we only work in the area of cat welfare .... we know cats!

Results: On average we help rescue, provide safe haven and find forever homes for over 300 cats and kittens each year.

Direct beneficiaries per year: Over 325 cats and kittens that were abandoned outdoors or in empty homes, from area animal shelters, or from families who could no longer care for them.

Geographic areas served: DC/Alexandria metropolitan area

Programs: We have a Pet Food Pantry program for local residents who need help feeding their cats. In this way, we can help keep cats in their homes and with their families.

This wonderful organization does so much good … for cats and the lucky people who adopt them.

KSC is unique in the area: the open area gives the cats comfort, stimulation and encourages social skills. I've adopted three cats from KSC and have been volunteering there for several years. I’m immensely impressed by the loving care and attention to needs given by the all-volunteer staff. They do so much on a shoe-string budget.

I’m happy to do what I can to help this place that does its best to care for all cats: lost, abandoned, abused, old and alone, cats who have never had a chance and those whose live have been upended.

Please open your heart, adopt a delightful loving pet, and donate to keep this special place going.

This is a wonderful rescue! They take in all type of cats in need, even the worst cases, and do everything possible to make their lives better and full. I live next door to a volunteer with King Street Cats, and have witnessed her welcome an older, chronically ill foster (sweet Tabitha) and a litter of kittens. All cats/kittens received not only the best medical care, but the compassion and love that made the kittens adoptable, and Tabitha enjoy her best life in her waning years. I would always recommend this group to anyone who is looking to adopt a cat or kitten.

My friend and neighbor is a volunteer at King Street Cats. Through her (and my own observations), I see what a GREAT organization KSC is! Currently, my neighbor helps with vet runs and is also fostering a sweet older cat named Tabitha. Tabitha's immune system is somewhat compromised, yet KSC never gives up on her. She has to use an inhaler for her asthma (the cat, that is), easily gets a virus that affects her eyes, and KSC provides all the medicine while the volunteer provides the love and safety. In addition, I am proud to see that KSC understands that an FIV+ cat is NOT a death sentence, and that they can be integrated into households with non-FIV+ cats. KSC allows for a free-roaming, cage-free environment which is very helpful for socialization and companionship. I love KSC!

I have been a proud volunteer for King Street Cats (KSC) since 2017. It’s gratifying to take part in an organization that practices what it preaches. Simply put, KSC saves lives. This wonderful organization takes in cats – no matter their health complications — and gives them a second chance at life. Through their army of volunteers, they provide care, socialization, and access to top-notch veterinary/ medical care for every cat that comes through their doors. Cats that cannot find a forever home are carefully placed into a loving foster home. I personally fostered sweet Tabitha, a diabetic and asthmatic kitty that needed some extra care, until she passed away after a long life. The KSC organization was nothing by supportive and caring through the whole process, and I cannot recommend this organization enough.

As a non-profit organization devoted to feline welfare, King Street Cats (hereafter referred to as KSC) exceeds all expectations in what I deem are the following critical areas: 1.) fidelity to principles; 2.) professionalism and attention to detail; 3.) associations with veterinarian facilities and the local community, and; 4.) personal association with the organization, its staff, and volunteers.

1.) Fidelity to principles. KSC has established itself, locally , regionally, and to some degree nationally as an effective feline welfare organization, being able - over a 20-year period - to muster the leadership, organizational integrity, resources, personnel, and stamina coupled with an ability to change and adapt over time to reinforce its founding principles of dedication, professionalism, and no-kill. Throughout its existence and up to the present time, there was never a truer statement which embodies the principles of this organization than that of "No cat left behind!" And this philosophy permeates the organization from the organizational leadership to the vital field volunteers. Additionally morale is high in this organization because everyone at KSC is treated with respect which promotes genuine dedication to the cause.

2.) Professionalism and attention to detail. Across the entire spectrum of feline welfare, from medical treatment (veterinarian- and organization-based), transportation to-and-from veterinarian facilities, day-to-day facilities feeding-watering-cleanliness-interaction, individual cats medical regimen development /maintenance to the cat vetting and adoption process all KSC staff and volunteers are highly trained. While their adoptions carry a necessary fee, there is always the adopters' option to return that cat or cats back to KSC. In addition to programs like microchips, fostering, and spay-neuter-return programs, the individual cat is never truly alone. From the induction of a cat into KSC to either final adoption or permanent residency, facet of this organization is process-based.

3.) Associations with veterinarian facilities and the local community. Since medical care is the most vital aspect of feline welfare, whether the cat has or has not health problems, KSC has developed and maintained strong and flexible relationships with veterinarian facilities, complemented by dedicated and eager volunteers to provide transportation of cats to-and-from facilities, administering of medication and procedures such as fluids and steaming, and consultation with medical professionals whenever necessary. Association with the local community is also another important facet of KSC's work, which includes adoption stations, theater night, kitten purlooza, and visiting the KSC facility itself.

4.) Personal association with the organization, its staff, and volunteers. This recommendation is given based on an over 10 year personal association with KSC from the standpoint of my wife being a volunteer and fosterer, adopting several cats from KSC, and personal relations with many of the KSC staff. What I can additionally say and/or reinforce about KSC is that the staff and volunteers "really care" about cats, their morale is high both individually and as an organization, and the cohesion of all members of KSC is for the most part, solid and sincere.

I have two cats from KSC, both special-needs. I've dealt with the folks at KSC quite a lot, both as an adopter and as a volunteer. They're among the most dedicated, committed, kind people I've ever met. Their dedication to their furry charges and their sincere interest in finding the right forever homes for those cats is striking and very welcome. That they're continuing in-person, by-appointment adoptions during the pandemic speaks volumes about their commitment. I also like that most of the cats in the KSC orphanage are free-range and not confined to cages.

The only fair and honest way to start this review is to say; I ABSOLUTELY LOVE KING STREET CATS! I started volunteering as a caretaker in 2014 while working full time - and when I retired in early 2015 - well, I was working full time! The love and empathy all volunteers have for not only the cats and kittens -- but each other -- is like none other. Every single volunteer has a passion and respect for this mission. No job is too big -- every life is worth saving. I have met some of my dearest friends at King Street Cats, and adopted my heart Sawyer at King Street Cats. Even though I had to move out of the area I'm still able to do small tasks from afar -- they keep me connected, they care about me, I have a family. The mountains they climb to save not only the cute little kittens but the dear souls with medical and/or behavioral needs - there just aren't words. The stories are endless - with happy endings - oh they make sure there are happy endings! This shelter is an example of what is 'everything good and great and wonderful in the world!' Please be sure to check out their website and social media to see for yourself! I promise you - you will not be the same. King Street Cats deserves the HIGHEST HONOR for their dedication, hard work and love -- the tons of love they give to every life they save!

We are volunteers and proud parents of a KSC alum. I picked clients for this form bc we've been unable to volunteer much in 2020 but our furball(s) have kept us sane!

It is truly volunteer-run. No paid staff, and some volunteers put in more than 40+h a week (esp the board, sometimes the target of anger online, i know they don't turn accept or reject adopters without care and they do their best to find not only homes but loving forever families). The all-volunteer status matters. I've served on the board of a nonprofit and seen painful discussions about paying a solid living wage...a good wage... while also having to justify every penny spent on something besides the direct mission (even knowing good pay is an indirect value add).

Years ago, I came in from a walk and all but pulled my husband to the shelter after meeting another volunteer and knowing we wanted a place to give time. Why THIS shelter? Partly the above-noted volunteer only status. I also love that most cats roam free, which is great for the "orphanage dwellers," and it helps ksc match kitty w human. Online, I see isolated anger amid the praise, usually complaints come from folks who weren't allowed to adopt and i can only imagine how that feels, but I also think that being a bit overprotective is a good thing. Ksc cares. Plain and simple. It's why they don'tdo same day "kitty on demand" adoption (or 'free' days...pet owners need to consider costs) .

We do mobiles...take a kitty to a store, build interest in said kitty (we bring back those that are totally miserable...many are nervous but end up loving as ll the attention), in kitty adoption generally, and in volunteering ... and yeah, we try to raise money too. I'd known we did ok at the last one and saw people volunteer after meeting us. But the best day first (yes, it has happened several times...and a record fundraising day felt great too!) time someone said she never imagined adopting until she met a kitty we had w us, fell in love, did her research, and got that very same cat. She waited on a busy day till the crowd dispersed so she could thank us

And I get that too. Bc I fell in love in a moment. And it was reciprocal...when we went to get her and I couldn't spot her in the busy room (even during closed hours..some cats are busier when not "on" ). I wasn't seeing her...until she bopped me on the head to say "Silly Mama, I'm right here" and sat on the paperwork while we filled it out.

Sweet Potato Bailey B is a nutty girl, a loud girl, and sheds like crazy (oh yeah, we're allergic...but kitty 1 was inherited so might as well add #2). But our lives would be so much emptier without her...40% nutball, 60% love (that purr could power the house!), 20 % fur (yup, she's extra). The love packed in that adorable little body!

Last part, I swear - KSC is no kill. Plenty of other shelters rely on KSC. They call w hard cases... ksc pays for vet costs galore and various physical or behavioral issues (tripods, thyroid issues, abuse, accidents)...cats without a chance anywhere else. And then kitties like ours (yes, we took an easy to adopt girl, but I tell myself it made space for the next)...beautiful kitties, surrendered for various reasons (I can see the sadness in the paperwork...they clearly couldn't afford vet care and she had a double ear infection and wasn't spayed at 2.5...a hard decision that was good for the animal (and us!)) that are super adoptable and would be snapped up and loved if only there was time before the clock ran out. They call KSC w those too.

Adopt, volunteer, donate a dollar when you see us (someday! ), donate more. KSC runs on and for love

As a person who worked in the non profit community for over 22 years I have to say that the most impressive organizations are the ones run with little to no staff. And given that King Street Cats is all-volunteer run, it's truly amazing what they are able to do, year after year. The passion and dedication of the volunteers is beyond compare. SO MANY CATS LIVES HAVE BEEN SAVED BY KSC! This is truly a gem in the Alexandria VA and animal shelter communities! Trust me, no funds go unappreciated and all are maximized to the fullest extent possible to continue to save more cats and kittens.

King Street Cats is the best!! I've been a volunteer for 10 years now and am constantly amazed at the level of commitment from everyone who helps this all-volunteer run organization succeed. Every year we rescue hundreds of cats and help them find their forever homes. EVERY SINGLE DOLLAR you give goes directly to support the care of the cats and kittens. Often the cats we see are difficult cases that other shelters are not able to handle. We care for them, nurse them back to health if needed, help them overcome behavior issues, and shower them with love and attention so they are ready for their new families. It's an incredible organization!

Absolutely the best. I have been a volunteer for over 15 years with this organization. They try dutifully to find the best home for each cat in their possession. The cats in their care are not only well cared for, but doted upon until they find their forever home. They do a remarkable job with cats who are deemed too sick or too difficult - often ending up with cats who are amazing. They are truthful about the cats in their care and don't sugarcoat any challenges. They believe each cat deserves to be loved. I have adopted four cats from there and couldn't love them more. See pictures of my current three.

I love this place. My last four cats have been from KSC. When I lost one to FIP, they were so thoughtful reaching out to me. My current three are amazing - one from Baltimore, one from St. Croix, and my Jersey girl. Best things to ever happen to me. Picture is my oldest.

I have been volunteering there for over 15 years. I am a regular cleaner, but also help with litter coordination and delivery, adoptions, and I even tried out fostering. It is hard work but we are all volunteers so everyone is there for the cats. I have learned so much about cat behavior and medications.

They are pretty strict about policies as we have seen the reasons for it. This rescue is about the cats. And we are no kill - so if a cat doesn't get adopted, we keep them. So I am sure some people get frustrated.

King Street Cats is a small, no-kill, free-roaming shelter in Alexandria, VA that is punching way above its weight rescuing more than 184 cats & kittens so far in 2013 and finding homes for 152. This is all down to the hard work of exceptionally dedicated volunteers and the support of the local community; the rescue receives no funding other than private donations. I have volunteered with KSC for 9 years and its the most-rewarding thing I have ever done. I am also a donor because I like that 100% of my donations go to the care of the cats. KSC has no paid staff. And, I can go any weekend and see exactly where the money is being spent! Support your local non-profits!

They do amazing work rescuing over 400 cats and kittens, many of them special medical and behavioral needs felines that just would not make it in shelters and some other rescues. They cherish each and every cat and make sure it finds a forever home not just any home. That's why I'm still volunteering after 14 years!

I am so impressed with the care given to figuring out the personality and needs of each kitty, which can change as a cat acclimates to the free-roaming shelter. This attention to detail translates into superb care and adoptions that are much more likely to be forever homes.

I love cats. And King Street Cats definitely loves cats. You can tell by the clean shelter with free roaming cats and kittens who are well fed and healthy. Potential adopters as well as the cats are vetted. The shelter is no-kill and the cats live at the shelter or in a foster home until they go to their forever home. The shelter is cleaned every morning and every evening every day. The cats get attention and human contact and care. I love the fact that the shelter is ran by dedicated volunteers and no paid staff so that all incoming money goes to the welfare of the cats. And all kinds of cats are taken in; not just the pretty, easily adoptable ones. Best shelter ever! I am very proud to be a volunteer who helps the King Street Cats.

I volunteer here occasionally because I LOVE that it's all volunteer-run. Yes, it means that there are limitations to how much can get done around here, and how quickly, but it also means that all the money goes to the cats. All of it. And KSC never gives up on a cat, which is touching. Once a King Street Cat, always a King Street Cat.

For the past 10 years I have been a volunteer with King Street Cats, and about 3 1/2 years ago I adopted my cat Hillary from KSC. She was a "What About Me?" kitty; if you go to the KSC website you will see that KSC has an annual campaign to put the spotlight on cats that are shy, older, or have health/special needs that make them harder to adopt. She was 6 years old at the time and did not like the other cats in the shelter, so she was not very happy and showed it. I actually took her to foster and then became a "failed foster parent" and adopted her. One of the things I really like about KSC is the willingness to take cats that may be more challenging to adopt, including those that may have significant health needs. The only thing that's asked is if there's room. KSC is all volunteer: caregivers, adoption counselors, foster parents, board members, website team, event planners, etc. I love working with so many dedicated people who are making a difference to many cats and kittens (and their adoptive families).

I have adopted 3 cats, and am fostering a special needs cat . kSC cares deeply about all the cats they take in and makes sure they are all vetted and in good health before they get adopted.

I volunteered for two years for this shelter, and I am extremely proud for the work I have done with them for the kitties, but the last two months ruined all my opinion about the totalitarian regime used to run this place.
I started volunteering after adopting one of their cats, almost 7 years ago, so It was a no brainer going back and adopting another one when our oldest passed away. The kitty was microchiped, so we called the company to transfer the primary contact, but KSC denied the transfer. I received a brief email saying that their policy is not to transfer the primary contact, but we were added as alternate (did I mention that they "forgot" to provide our contact information?).
I wrote back, this time to the president, who told me again about the policy, and that we do not need to be worried about it. I replied objecting to the policy, because the kitty is in our custody, not theirs (what if we change state or country?) but they simply ignored me. Long story short, we have an appointment with a lawyer, because we want to go to the bottom of this unprofessional and unethical behavior. This "policy" was not disclosed on the adoption contract, but only written in VERY small print on a pet info page from another shelter.
I am going to avoid describing our personal experience with a person of the board taking care of our cats, which personally disappointed me to so many levels, but I cannot avoid to do the math and give credits to all the negative reviews I have found online so far.

I've been a volunteer at King Street Cats for 8 years and it's the most rewarding thing I've done. To see the compassion the organization has for cats and ensuring the right match is made between a cat and their human is amazing. The volunteers work tirelessly, around the clock-no weekends or snow days or holidays. I've also had the joy of adopting a kitty from KSC-her name is Smudge (photo attached). Even though I am a volunteer, they made sure she would plug in well into my current situation and it was the right fit. I highly recommend KSC-whether you want to adopt a cat, donate your time, donate supplies, or donate funds-you will be so thankful you were a part of helping those kitties! >^..^

Our beloved cat, Emily, had died in 2016. We went to King Street (45 miles from our home), because it is a non-kill shelter. We met a lot of beautiful kitties, and some wonderful staff. Raj, mostly white, with some bengal, stole our hearts. King Street Cats would not let us take him home that day, so you don't make just an emotional decision. We left, with no cat, but returned the next day, and Raj, now Tam Lin, came with us. He loves his home, and we love him. King Street is a wonderful organization, that does its best to match up cats and perspective owners. It is everything a non-profit should be. Kudos to KSC!

I wish I had found King Street Cats when I adopted my babies! They are by far the most caring shelter I have come across, and really take the time to check out potential adopters and make sure their cats go to the right homes. They also take excelletent care of all cats and kittens, waiting until they are at an appropriate age and weight before undergoing procedures which I think is very important to the kitten's health and safety.
I also love the fact that the cats are free roaming, meaning they aren't cooped up all day and get to interact with the other cats!

And to top it all of - the staff are super friendly and helpful!

I currently foster kittens for KSC and after my experience with them, not only am I so glad I picked them to work with, but I will be recommending them to any and every one I come across that is thinking of adopting.

My husband and I adopted our first King Street Cats kitty, Loki in January 2015. We were looking for a playmate for our wild child, Rogue, and the two of them hit it off right from the get-go. Shortly before Christmas of 2015, we adopted our second KSC alum, Patches -- who, at the time, was the shelter's longest resident, having been there her entire life (nearly 7 years!). Both times, we were very impressed by how well cared for all of KSC's kitties are and how invested the volunteers are in finding the purrfect forever home for each one!

I would highly recommend King Street Cats to anyone looking to add a new feline to their family!

King Street Cats rescues, fosters, provides medical care, hospitalizion, cleaning, feeding, nurturing, head pats, scratches, stories, manicures and pedicures ;)....and LOVE...LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS OF LOVE -- all through volunteers and donations! I am so excited and honored to be a part of an organization that resembles all that is GOOD and TRUE and WONDERFUL in the world! It's been a joy to be there -- and to be depended upon to help keep our kitties loved and safe until they find their forever homes. King Street Cats is ABSOLUTELY DESERVING of your recognition -- they are a WONDERFUL organization! Thank you for the opportunity to comment!

I've adopted from and been a volunteer for KSC for 12 years. Its hard to believe its an all-volunteer organization. On average more than 300 cats and kittens are rescued each year. What is most amazing is that KSC will take on the special medical and behavioral needs cats that are on death row at area shelters. They provide a safe haven and all veterinary needs until these cats are ready to find a home--how ever long it takes. I am proud to be a volunteer with such a dedicated, amazing group of people saving these precious souls.

King Street Cats is such an amazing organization! I have adopted from them and currently foster and could not be happier with them. They truly have the best interest of the cats at heart and work tirelessly to take care of them and find them all forever homes. I am so thankful for KSC and all the volunteers that make their mission possible!

I started volunteering with KSC when my family and I moved to Northern VA and I am continually impressed by how much they do and how many lives they are able to impact with an all volunteer crew. This group is incredibly dedicated to saving the lives of as many cats and kittens as they can. I have fostered over a dozen kittens for them and adopted two and could not be happier with my experience. They are such a great organization and I encourage all animal lovers to get involved with them.

I have fostered over 5 litters of kittens for King Street Cats. They are the most awesome rescue to work with. I love that they screen their adopters thoroughly and they stress the importance of adopting kittens in pairs.
They have a wonderful group of caring, dedicated volunteers who care for the cats and find them the most loving homes possible.

We adopted our boy, Pinot from KSC and continue to support them ever chance we get. They're a wonderful organization with fantastic staff who truly care. They listened to our concerns and needs and helped direct us to our 4 year old boy, who was a better fit than a kitten as a companion for our older, existing cat.

I was adopting my first cat in my adult life, so I was understandably very nervous. The volunteers took their time answering my endless questions, assuaging my fears, and helping me decide what traits were most important for me in selecting my companion. Then they allowed me to come back every weekend for nearly two months as I spent time getting to know the cats as I came to my decision. I had been to other shelters that were (understandably) desperate to adopt out their cats, making me feel pressured to take home a cat I was unsure about. Because King Street Cats is a no-kill shelter, they can take the time to ensure the perfect fit between cat and owner. Their patience and understanding is unmatched by any other adoption center in the area. I adopted my three-legged boy, Knox, in August and the two of us couldn't be happier!

I am thankful to King Street Cats for taking into their care a beautiful calico rescued from a long standing, large colony of community cats. KSC took a chance on this shy girl who was bonded to her foster but difficult to show to prospective adopters. Because KSC has so many daily volunteers at their No kill shelter, shy cats receive a lot of love and attention making them infinitely more adoptable. This lucky girl found her forever home two months after arriving at KSC. This rescue goes the distance for cats who need extra vet care, love and attention.

We have volunteered with King Street Cats for 7 years. For several years, we helped in the Cat Room with cleaning and feeding. For the past few years, we have fostered kittens every summer. You will not find a more devoted group of volunteers anywhere. The leadership is excellent and cats are well-cared for and loved. KSC has partnered with several area veterinary clinics so the cats receive excellent medical care. If you are looking to adopt a cat or to volunteer, you should visit KSC today!

My family and I have been volunteering at KSC for over 3 years, and I am continually impressed by the dedication, enthusiasm and energy of the volunteer corps. Someone is always willing and ready to step up to feed the cats, clean the catroom, staff adoption events, transport cats to the vet, foster cats, and so much more. It is such a positive and uplifting experience to help these cats and to work with such dedicated people.

If we won the lottery, we've always said that we'd give the first batch of money to King Street Cats (KSC) as the first charitable cause. ..Actually scratch that.

We already won the lottery when we adopted Gino and Mia from their cat shelter. They were formerly known as the wine kitties, Chablis and Chardonnay, and we met them on a fateful day in 2009.

We were aware from a work colleague, of the amazing work that King Street Cats do in saving the lives of cats in the Alexandria area. She volunteered at the shelter, just like several others who work for nothing do; tending to the cats on a daily basis.

We sometimes visited KSC if we were passing by; just to pet the cats and show them some love for an afternoon, dropping the occasional bit of cash in their jar, or buying some cat food for them. Again, the KSC volunteers do that on a regular basis.

One day while visiting, one of the gray kitties jumped on my wife’s shoulder and starting purring. She said to me, “I don’t care what happens, we’re taking this one”. And so it was, that Gino claimed her as her own, swiftly followed by my own declaration of love for what seemed to be the prettiest cat in the world – Mia, even though she was feeling poorly after an operation (performed at the personal cost of KSC).

Mia tried to hide under a sink from the other cats, but I stroked her and as she was the sister of Gino, I knew I just had to have her.

We renamed them Gino, after Ginola (who was a French international soccer player with gray hair, and Mia was named after the famous women’s soccer player, Mia Hamm), as both of our kitties chased the soccer ball on the TV, whenever it was on!

We have made trips back to KSC and always seen the incredible work they do, and I get the Facebook updates which show the adoption of the cats to new family homes. Their love and support for the cats is incredible, and if I had one wish for a lottery win (and I have spoken of this on many an occasion), I would pay for KSC to relocate to a bigger premises. If there was grant money, I would love to see this happen, so the cats could enjoy more spaces in which to play, before they eventually get adopted.
Please consider this when awarding grant money – for they are a noble cause.

Years ago, I fostered a couple lovely cats from this organization. It was the first time I had taken on this type of responsibility but their communication and positive attitudes made it an easy experience. Eventually, I adopted a cat from them. I had seen her on PetFinder and was coincidentally at King Street Cats!
I've since moved so volunteer with a different cat rescue group, but King Street Cats started this fulfilling journey.

King Street Cats has the ideal environment to get to know a cat before you adopt. The cats are chillin' in a nice big room. I have fostered cats through other groups that were nice cats, but did terribly in a cage at an adoption fair. This group is a model for adoption groups around the country. Please support their work.

It amazes me that KSC remains all-volunteer, and yet manages to rescue and find homes for more than 300 cats each year. Many cats are senior, shy or otherwise considered "hard-to-adopt." KSC goes to extraordinary lengths to get cats the veterinary care they need, raising the money for surgery and visits to specialists when necessary. KSC's dedicated volunteers spend many, many hours caring for these cats and make sure they find "forever homes," not "just until." And, I know that 100% of my donations go to the care of the cats!

KSC volunteers, particularly those at the Shelter in Alexandria, have the unique ability to help cats who are initally shy and perhaps difficult to place for adoption and socialize them so they are able to find forever homes. Two cats that I was fostering for another group, Gretchen and Gidget, had been in foster care with me for a long time. Beautiful long haired dilute torties, the girls had warmed up to me but were very fearful of strangers. KSC accepted them into their program and the girls blossomed under the care of the volunteers who come into the shelter and went on to find a permanent home together. Truly amazing considering that they had lived outside for eight months before they were rescued.

We adopted one of the sweetest cats I've ever met from King Street Cats in January 2012. Her name is Winky and she's blind in one eye and was flown to the U.S. mainland from the island of St. Croix through a partnership KSC has with an animal welfare organization in St. Croix. My husband and I still comment on all of the effort KSC went through to bring Winky into our lives via this program. KSC's adoption counselors recommended the perfect cat for us and our other cat who was 9 years old at the time we adopted her (and had always been an only cat). Just yesterday, we saw them sleeping right next to each other on the couch; we still can't believe they get along so well. I have now been volunteering at KSC for the past year to help others also find amazing cats like Winky! It is such a rewarding experience to volunteer at such a dedicated organization.

We adopted a cat from King Street Cats over a year ago and we were impressed with the entire adoption process. The process begins with a detailed application and vetting process that was very helpful because when we arrived at the shelter, KSC had picked out a few possible "matches" for us based on our profile and application. The cat we ended up adopting was one of the cats they had picked for us, which shows that they really pay individual attention to each family and genuinely want to match each cat up with people who will be the best fit for both the cat and the people. Since adopting our cat, we have been to several fundraising events and I am pleasantly surprised that people still remember our cat and ask how she is doing. I can honestly say that I have never experienced a more hands-on and truly dedicated shelter as KSC.

Amazing people doing amazing work! They are really going over and beyond to try to find the right puuuurson for a cat. They have all the background info on the cats if available and make it hard not to fall in love with those sweet little guys! We've donated money in the past to support the cause and we'll do it again! Cats need more supporters out there like this organization!!!

And every dime goes into the needs of the cats. There are no paid employees! Love King Street cats! And they took care of my cat 10 years ago when it was found...and got it the care it needed.

I have volunteered for KSC for over 5 years now, and am still excited to help by adoption counseling at their shelter on weekends, and maintaining photo albums on the KSC website. The board and other volunteers are utterly devoted to the welfare of the cats, and wonderful people to work with - those who match the right cat(s) with the right families, those who foster cats and kittens, and those who do such a great job feeding and cleaning each day! I encourage anyone thinking about adopting a cat (or two!), to visit our wonderful no kill, free roaming shelter full of lovely, sweet felines...and thank those who adopt from, foster for, and support this terrific organization financially and/or through service.

Putting on my Cat Behavior Consultant hat, I want to salute King Street Cats for being a learning organization -- one that continues to review its processes and procedures, making changes to improve the lives of all the cats and kittens it touches. These folks are truly passionate about cats, and go to great lengths to save as many as they can.

Changing to my adopter hat, I want to thank KSC for allowing us to adopt the amazing, cool-as-a cucumber cat named Betsey. Bets came into a home with four dogs and three other cats and never batted an eyelash. She's a diplomat, a comfort providing cat, a friend to all our doggies, and a true comedienne. We'll never be able to thank KSC enough for helping us adopt a beloved member of our family.

I am a certified animal behavior consultant. King Street Cats has invited me to present information to their volunteers multiple times. I appreciate the dedication of the volunteers, and their eagerness to learn more about the science of feline behavior. The volunteers work hard to provide enrichment for the cats in their care, in addition to giving loving care to all of them. I am very impressed with KSC and their desire to continue to improve their processes.

I lost my 15 year old cat and was devastated. I had so much love in my heart -- and there was also an emptiness. My sister (and many others) suggested I adopt a rescue kitten. I went several places, but when I looked at the cats on this site my heart felt a tug. I met with them this week and they suggested I adopt two little siblings (5 months old). They had had a horrible start to life and KSC had come to the rescue. They were being "fostered" by a wonderful person who obviously cared for them so much. The minute I laid eyes on this little brother and sister, I was smitten. That very evening, they came into my home and began playing. They slept beside me that first night. It has been less than a week, but these adorable kittens have already secured my love for the rest of their lives. That foster mother did a wonderful job with these two -- they know love and security. I am so very grateful that I will do anything and everything I can to help this amazing group, KSC, with donations and my support. What a great job they do for these cats - young and old. If you are looking for a feline to be part of your family, you should definitely come to KSC!

We come to King Street Cats all the way from Australia each year because it is such a wonderful non-profit where the cats benefit from the incredible work of the people involved. We brought college students with us the last two years on a field trip and they were amazed by how happy the cats are to know they have a life haven like King Street.

We discovered KSC last summer and were immediately impressed by their staff and their ability to care for so many cats. They are a wonderful organization full of caring, dedicated, and professional volunteers. During the last Combined Federal Campaign, I added them to my CFC list for donations. When we were ready to adopt a cat this winter, KSC was the obvious choice to find a cat to fit our home. We found a lovely lady that was 8 years old that we wanted to take home. KSC let us make multiple visits with the cats to make sure our pick was indeed a good fit for our home. They took time to vet us to ensure cats were going to good homes. We've had our sweet girl home for almost 4 months now thanks to KSC!
