This is a fantastic rescue society. I was first in touch with them after I'd rescued 3 kittens from a local parking lot. I needed help getting them adopted, and KCZD came to the rescue. They have great adoption days at PetSmart and were helpful, supportive, and flexible while working with me to get the little guys home. They offered their full support to help me through fostering the kittens. I was immediately impressed with the care that they give the cats. I think that stands out to me the most, followed closely by the dedication of the Director and volunteers. The cats were fed high-quality food, and filtered water. If requiring daily "poop" reports doesn't tell you how dedicated the director is - I don't know what will. They are played with multiple times a day, brushed, given cuddles, and helped to improve their adoptability. I was told that no cat is ever given up on here - they stay until we find them a home. I was so impressed with it all - I became a volunteer! Donate to them, adopt through them, or just spread the word to others who may be looking for a new furry friend. This is a well-run organization with high standards. You won't be disappointed.

Very disappointing experience. Brought my friend there to see a cat and hopefully adopt. Waited over thanksgiving and black Friday to be called to complete adoption. No call. Called on froday in pm- no return call.
Saturday was called: told adoption was denied. Nov 26th-called friend could hear her sobbing - totally heart broken. Reason given was “due to lack of interest.” Lack of interest? Volunteers not helpful at all. They were Suggesting different cats while potential cat was running around and not paying attention to anyone. She wanted that one cat and expressed interest in adopting him. Very Upset regarding this whole experience . No due diligence on their part to call veterinary practice or references. Failure in duty to inform- i had to tell my friend the bad news. Suspect there was bias on part of foster toward older individual with a handicap and very quiet demeanor.

Expected better from Karma cat.

I had been thinking of adopting a kitten for a while when I heard about Karma Cat. I went to the center with the hope of finding 2 kittens but ended up taking the last 3 of a litter. The minute I walked into the center I could feel the love & caring the volunteers had for these cats. The interview process went very smoothly but definitely in depth. The center had 2 fund raisers I attended. These volunteers still remember my babies a year later. I highly recommend Karma Cat to anyone that is thinking of adopting.

The team at Karma Cat is amazing. Everything they do from public outreach to TNR to cat adoptions there is always a friendly face at the center of it to make you feel welcome. The pride the staff and volunteers take in the care of the cats and kittens is unlike anything I’ve seen before. Everyone is so passionate and kind and puts the animals needs and well-beings above their own.

Karma Cat & Zen Dog is a group of caring and loving volunteers. They will do anything humanly possible to care for and rescue all cats that come to their door. The shelter is kept meticulously clean and the cats for adoption are healthy and cared for. I’ve met a lot of these animals and we’ve even adopted one. Please visit Karma Cat and definitely consider adopt a kitty from them.

I’ve been volunteering & fostering at KCZD and love doing so as this is an amazing organization. And it wouldn’t be proper fostering if we didn’t adopt our latest foster who fought for his life and got the best care this nonprofit could provide to help him fight his way out and became the most adorable kitten for which we are grateful.

I have been volunteering with Karma Cat + Zen Dog Rescue Society since they opened their cat adoption center in Milltown in 2018. It is now my home away from home. 100% volunteer run, Karma Cat + Zen Dog Rescue Society's mission is to "provide a safe and peaceful haven for homeless, abandoned or abused animals". Working closely with local animal shelters and the community, they carry out this mission by relieving the overcrowded shelters, as well as educating and assisting local communities with TNR (trap, neuter, return) of feral cat colonies in their area. This is all made possible through donations and fundraising.
Volunteer involvement includes both spending time with the kitties, as well as "behind the scenes" opportunities. (Check out all the volunteer opportunities on the website! There is something for everyone!!) As a cleaner at the cat adoption center, I am able to interact with all the kitties , learn about cat care, while meeting other volunteers! As a crafter, I am able to put my sewing skills to good use by creating items for the merchandise team to sell at events to raise money for the rescue...and meet and create with other crafters!
It has been a privilege "working" with such a dedicated group or volunteers and so many lucky kitties!

Best place to volunteer! Although Karma Cat and Zen Dog Rescue Society was formed 9 years ago, this wonderful organization moved into Milltown just last year and has become my second home! Credit for KCZD's success goes to the outstanding leadership of founder and Executive Director Christie Arlotta who, along with Assistant Executive Director Krystal Hazard, lead, guide, educate, and support the 183 volunteers (and counting!) who care for all the animals in various capacities: from Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Adopt, to Trap-Neuter-Return, and Humane Education. I started as a cleaner and socializer because I wanted to be around the kitties! This morphed into outreach to give the community an opportunity to learn about what we do, which is not possible without the financial support of generous donors and supporters of our fundraisers! Then I couldn't say no to fostering a sweet dilute calico who needed to go somewhere when the center was undergoing renovations. But this and more is the story of all our volunteers! Thank goodness for the dedication of everyone at Karma Cat and Zen Dog for as Rebecca Smith, Develop Director once told me: "There will always be kittens".

I first learned about KCZD as a potential adopter, and found the adoption process to be clear, very focused on the welfare of the animal (which is very important to me), and the people I spoke to throughout the process were friendly and helpful.

After adopting Jackfrost, I got involved as a volunteer, fostering kitties during the pandemic. Again, the team got me set up with all the supplies I might need, answered every silly question I had, and made themselves available for anything I needed. Additionally, they helped me learn so much about cat and especially kitten care. I’ve fostered over 30 kittens and cats, including one that I adopted, Bruce.

I’ve become more involved over the years, and every day this group of people I volunteer with becomes more like family with one common goal - providing exceptional care to the animals and a fun and happy environment for our volunteers. Not to say we haven’t faced our fair share of challenges, but when you know you have a whole team to support you and work with you, even the most challenging times are made so much easier. I cannot speak highly enough about this organization for the care and love shown to the animals and the humans caring for them, and I’m proud to be associated with such a great group.

I have volunteered for KCZD for 5 years. I wouldn’t have it any other way. It is so amazing to be part of saving many cats lives and showing them the love they deserve. Many would never experience a nice warm bed, getting regular meals or that great big hug. Seeing many cats and kittens go to their forever homes is the best feeling.
Reaching out to the community to tell them what we do is very rewarding. Hearing visitors come in comment on how clean our adoption center is and how happy our babies are makes me proud to be a part of it.
Our entire organization works together to make sure our cats are healthy, happy and find their forever homes.
Our name is out there but we will always reach further.

I first came to know Karma Cat + Zen Dog Rescue Society during Covid 2020. I was looking to adopt a cat and they came highly recommended by several people. Going to see the Milltown Adoption Center was so amazing & eye opening. Everything is meticulous and clean, the cats are all so happy! They are exceptionally cared for & loved. I adopted 2 cats from them in 2020 and started volunteering with Karma Cat + Zen Dog right after! Getting involved was the best decision of my life for sure. So many animals have been through the doors, helped with spay/neuter/vaccines & found their forever homes... and every day we get up and do it all again and love every moment of it!!!

Karma Cat & Zen Dog is how all adoptions agencies should be. Organized. Passionate. Caring. They put the care of the animals first, and it really shows. They have a very strong support structure and community who all go above and beyond. I have adopted multiple cats through them and each time it was a very positive experience with no surprises. I have adopted from other agencies in the past, and the experiences were not even close. Karma Cat & Zen Dog really do put every penny and second of effort where it counts.

Four years ago, I was looking for a way to use my spare time wisely and in a way where I would feel useful, helpful, and that would benefit others. I found VolunteerMatch.com and found Karma Cat +Zen Zen Dog was looking for a fundraising coordinator. I applied, I was contacted almost immediately and the rest is history. Since then I have been a Development Director, Board Member, foster for 30+ cats, Adoption Counselor and even had a cleaning shift twice monthly for several years.
I've also seen hundreds of cat go to their forever homes. EVERY volunteer loves and cares for EVERY cat we care for as if it were our own. We love each and every volunteer in the organization and consider one another family.
This was my first volunteer experience and it has been so much more than I expected. I knew that I would love the animals but I didn't know how much I'd love them or how close I'd become to the other volunteers.
If you want to learn how to care for cats and help them find a home, maybe foster or just socialize them (yes- you can sign up just to play with them!!), this is the organization to do it. You won't find a more knowledgeable staff of truly caring volunteers anywhere.

I'm still a volunteer and hope to be for a long, long time!

I started volunteering as a cat socializer with Karma Cat Zen Dog in September 2019 and right away could tell how organized, friendly, and welcoming everyone was. They take great care of their kitties, are very professional, and their facilities are beautiful. I also love how active they are on their social media pages and all the lovely pictures featuring their adoptable cats and kittens. I've loved volunteering with them and always have so much fun on my shifts. Shortly after I became a volunteer, I fell in love with one of their adoptable kittens (pictures attached) and decided to take her home for myself. As expected, the adoption process was smooth, organized, and everyone was very helpful! Thanks to KCZD, I have a fun place to volunteer doing what I love and an adorable new family member, Penelope who is such a sweet addition to my home! Thank you, all!!

It is not enough to rate Karma Cat Zen Dog Rescue Society as 5 stars. Until one has met or talked with a volunteer and come to the Milltown Adoption Center or cat homes at the North Brunswick Pet Smart, one cannot really appreciate the love, compassion, awareness, and care the felines are surrounded with. Volunteers treat these cats as their own and spend countless hours socializing, fostering, cleaning, and feeding them. Behind all this work are lots of hugs, kisses, and time spent in the felines' homes if they need the extra attention. Not to mention all the pictures taken! If the photos could talk, they would show more than just the felines' markings and whiskers. They would show the interest the volunteers have in the well-being and comfort of the animals.

The leadership at Karma takes tremendous pride in ensuring the safety and health of the felines and of the volunteers. The environment takes everyone's interest in to account. The Directors always lend a ear to the volunteers, no matter what the topic of conversation/the message is. They are consistently responsive and transparent in their responses. When you are a volunteer at Karma, you feel valued by the organization. The Directors know the volunteers' names and always greet us with a welcoming smile. They have the utmost compassion for the felines taken in and have the most tireless and draining task. Through it all, they work past the long and strenuous hours and never show the toll animal rescue takes on people. The Directors educate and inform volunteers without making us feel inadequate or naive. I believe no other individuals than them could represent the Karma organization for what is, which is love and respect for all things.

If anyone wants to volunteer or contribute to cat rescue, then this is the place to want to be at. We contribute as many or as little time as we want, and team work is always present. Individuals all the way from the Board andto the volunteers are kind, helpful, and have the same goal toward the felines-and to people. It feels like a community, and I feel fortunate and honored to have been accepted and trusted by Karma.

I had a horrible experience. Met with trainer who was very aggressive and critical. Told me that I didn’t come early for training and that shows lack of passion. She wrote me off before giving me a chance. I remained happy and engaged which irritated trainer. At the end says I need more training. I said I did not see that coming. Told me the directors would really like that. Showed commitment. Showed me how to lock and unlock back door and take the trash out and made me feel happy and secure about my future at shelter. Trainer knew when we said goodbye that she was going to tell directors to cut me yet raised my hopes knowing I would be hurt and humiliated by the email that came the next day saying that I am not up to par as a human being and that my services are not wanted at the shelter. Who treats people like that. Maybe you should not put all of your compassion and good will towards just the cats. Human beings are worth something too.

My friend had a stray cat in her yard and contacted a couple other places first with no luck before this company called and took the time to talk with her and help her through every step of the way. Karma Cat & Zen Dog are an amazing rescue. I always recommend them to people if they're looking for a cat; I know they are in the North Brunswick Petsmart and they also have another location in Milltown. They care deeply for the lives that they are saving and I am grateful for that. I am also so excited to hear they will be doing more dog rescues now that they are expanding their kennels.

Six of my cats have come from them in their Petsmart location and they are companions I don't know what I would do without.

The Milltown location is such a great idea too, the cats are allowed to sit in the window and roam around and it's much better than being stuck in a cage all day and night.

They are also on top of the cleaning which makes me so happy. You have no idea how many shelters I see that are disgusting and stink. Karma Cat and Zen Dog really take the time to actually care for the animals they are saving. To me that is the most important thing.

We got in two 2 week old kittens that needed bottle feeding and round the clock care that our rescue was unable to accommodate. KCZD did not hesitate in stepping up to the plate and taking on these small kittens! We knew our kittens were in great hands transferring to this rescue and both kittens were adopted, together, into a fantastic home when they grew up! I joined this rescue about 6 years ago. From the first day I started socializing, I knew that this was a great organization to work with. The animals are always well cared for and loved from the moment they come to us to the moment they find a forever home. I ended up meeting Jill, an ornery tabbie who was living at our previous catquarters at Edgebrook animal hospital. At first I wasen't sure how she felt about me. After some time socializing, Me and my family decided we wanted to adopt a cat. When we went to Edgebrook with Christie, the rescues leader, Jill plopped herself on my lap, something I have never seen her do. That was when I knew that she was asking me to take her home. Ever since then, she has become a well loved part of the family.

Karma Cat is the best rescue to volunteer for/foster for/adopt from. I’m a longtime volunteer, and they’ve helped me TNR ferals, place four cats I’ve found abandoned outside in loving homes, and provided all the necessary equipment/supplies/etc while I was fostering the kitties in the meantime. They generously provided dental care/vaccinations/flea treatment/etc for my second foster cat, who I ended up adopting. When I fell in love with a shy cat I was helping to socialize during my volunteer hours, they allowed me to foster to adopt, to make sure she’d be accepted by my resident cats. (And, although another generous volunteer had sponsored her adoption fee, I donated to the organization when I adopted her, because I was so grateful for the opportunity to adopt her, and everyone who helped me with the process was very patient and kind. ♥️) Always there for advice and assistance for my cats, or any cats in need, they are making a huge difference in the lives of homeless cats, dogs, and the community! My experience with this organization is wonderful, and it’s incredibly rewarding to be a small part of what they do every day to change the world!

I had never volunteered regularly until I found this great group of people. This organization is well run by 100% volunteers and is a really happy place to be. They rescue cats and dogs from local shelters, TNR work, and the local communities. I fell honored to now be a part of this family. I started about 2.5 years ago as a foster, and now am involved with most aspects of the organization. I wish I had started with them sooner. There are so many levels for volunteering here. From crafters, cleaners, socializers, adoption counselors, and more. Reach out and see what you can do to help.

I’ve volunteered with this amazing group for 5 years. From day 1, I realized the commitment to every cat. Volunteers cheer when a cat gets adopted because they take a personal interest in every cat. New and better ways are explored to increase the quality of life for the cats in our charge. Cleanliness is a must to keep up the good health of every cat. Transparency is a must. Let the adopters know the real cat. Do they get along with children, dogs. Other cats? We truly love updates from the adopters to see how the cats are adjusting to their new environment. To sum up: Total commitment from every volunteer

Where do I begin to talk about how terrific KCZD is? My journey started with them helping me TNR 7 kitties in my yard. They have grown up to be happy thriving members of my backyard. They took 6 kittens, all have found loving homes. One of them could not be socialized and is now a happy couch cat in my home.
I started volunteering for this rescue and then adopted another happy baby. All the kittens and cats live like kings and queens until they find their forever homes. They receive so much love from everyone. I can’t say enough good things. All the directors and volunteers are so dedicated which says a lot for KCZD. I am so happy to have met so many kitty crazy people and admire their dedication to such a great cause.

No animal is left behind with this rescue. They take care of each animal as if it were their own right up until they find a forever home. Each person involved has a heart for rescue.

Volunteering with Karma Cat + Zen Dog feels more like a group of friends united for a cause than a network of volunteers.
Someone is always willing to lend a hand, no matter what the task is. I've only officially been with the group for a little over a year and it feels like I've known these people most of my life. If you're looking to volunteer with a group of happy, friendly people then you found the right rescue!

Karma Cat + Zen Dog Rescue is hands down the best rescue in central New Jersey, and possibly the country! We work as a family to save the lives of cats and dogs. The diversity of our volunteers is one of our strengths, and we use our various talents to fundraise for, foster, clean, and socialize our animals. I have truly found a missing piece with this organization, and I'm thankfully for my inclusion in the family!

What an amazing organization.
I first learned of them a few years ago when I adopted one of the beautiful cats they were caring for. Well about a year later we adopted another and he wasn't quite fitting in. I reached out to them and they spent months trying to help my new addition fit in with no avail so they helped me find him a new home. Well after that instead of adopting again I knew I wanted to help them. So I applied to volunteer. I'm so glad I did. The people involved are amazing!!! The care they provide for the animals is above and beyond what you would expect. There is daily communication between the volunteers. The fosters take such amazing care of the new kittens socializing them, getting them proper medical care. I could go on and on. KCZD rescue society really is one big family of two and four legged beings.

I have been a Veterinary Technician for over 20 years. I have "worked" with many rescues as they came through the places I worked at. Never did I actually volunteer with any group before. 2 years ago I started working with KarmaCat and im grateful I found such a fantastic group to work with. I started fostering, which has brought me so much joy with all "my" kitties that found homes. I have just started volunteering with adoption days and now have gotten my kids involved as junior socializers. They love and it and it helps them to learn about different people and animals. And helps mold them into better people. You just have to look at what a great family this group is, everyone is a terrific role model!! Never would I not work with this family/group!! Ohana!!!!!

I have always loved animals and was looking for a way to get involved and make a difference. I came across Karma Cat & Zen Dog on Volunteer Match and started volunteering here doing cat socialization. I look forward to seeing and playing with the cats, and I love knowing I'm making a difference keeping the cats used to human contact and increasing their chances of finding good homes. Everyone that works here is passionate about animals and the leadership is outstanding. It only took me a few weeks here to take home a kitten that I absolutely love. Karma Cat is big on social media and it's so rewarding hearing when the cats get adopted!

Karma Cat & Zen dog is run and supported by a wonderful group of individuals that follow a loving and immaculate standard of care for the kitties and dog's in the group. There is a wealth of knowledge, experience, and care that goes in to taking care of the animals that are rescued, and it shows! The goal is to provide the best care, while finding the most fitting forever home. The volunteers spend countless hours cleaning and caring for the adoptable pets, and so know what type of forever family will be the best for each animal. I love this group, and am a proud volunteer and adopter.

I adopted a cat from this group 4 years ago with no issues. I have been a volunteer for 8 months and have had a blast. Christie the director bursts with energy and care for the animals. The training is thorough for volunteers and communication is frequent. Everyone works together for the animals. New ideas are encouraged. Nothing is ever forced upon us. Scheduling of volunteering is detailed and questions are always answered quickly.

A wonderful family group!

Karma Cat & Zen Dog take the very best care of their rescues. Our first visit to the vet (a year after we adopted) yielded excellent results...perfect health for both our boys! Their volunteer staff is the best there is! Although it has been 2 years since we adopted, they all recognize us when we walk back into PetSmart :) They are completely passionate about animals and you would be hard pressed to find better taken care of rescues!

When I adopted my first cat from Karma and brought him to the Veterinarian for the first time, the Vet was very impressed with how well taken care of he was. That spoke volumes about how well the cats are taken care of and how much the volunteers care about the cats. A few months later, I adopted a second cat. She has some minor medical issues but Karma Cat helped me with any concerns I had. All of the volunteers here are great people with a common love of animals.

Even before I became an official volunteer for Karma Cat + Zen Dog they helped me find homes for 8 cats & kittens that I found.
After I joined the ranks of volunteers you realized that it's such a well run and organized group. They manage to efficiently give the fosters nearly around the clock care and love at the Petsmart adoption center, at Cat Quarters which houses more adoptable cats and kittens and in private foster homes for cats and dogs.
Everyone I've met since I started volunteering has been wonderful and so caring towards these homeless pets.
It's been a great experience to work with such a lovely group of kind and devoted volunteers!

I got involved with Karma Cat Zen Dog when I adopted my cat, Lucy. I saw how much these cats were cared for and loved, as well as the good it does for the community. That is how and why I became a volunteer. During the time I have volunteered with Karma Cat Zen Dog, hundreds of cats have been carefully placed into good and loving homes. Including Lucy! They definitely deserve 5 stars!

I discovered Karma Cat by coincidence. My 16-year-old cat had recently died, and I wasn't sure if I wanted to adopt a new kitten so soon after losing him. I met with Christie and told her my story, and we agreed that a "special" cat (or two) would be best for me, under the circumstances. Christie showed me every cat that they had and gave me the low-down on all of them. She didn't try to hide it if a cat had a few "issues"--she made it very clear that what she and the volunteers at Karma Cat wanted most of all was to find a forever home for each and every cat, if they could, and that the only way to do this was to be up-front and honest about each cat's quirks and personalities. I adopted two of their "shy" cats, and I was impressed by how much advice and support Christie was willing to offer in order to help all of us make the transition. Christie announced my kitties' adoption on Facebook and on Karma Cat's blog, and I was overwhelmed at the outpouring of kindness and happiness that came my way from so many of the volunteers. I had been grief-stricken at losing my cat (no, I'm not exaggerating), and Karma Cat helped me to feel good about moving forward and giving two new (wonderful) kitties a home.

We wanted to add to our family by adopting a cat. We found our new best friend in Jethro, Karma Cat help us with shot and neutering as well as finding a wonderful new friend. Then two months later we added a second kitty since we were so happy with our first one, when Dylan joined we followed their expert advise and now our kitties are best friends. I would recommend Karma Cat for anyone looking to add a new best friend to their family while having the support of great volunteers at Karma Cat!

I came upon Karma Cat & Zen Dog quite by accident. I was shopping for cat and kitten food in a local pet store. It was one of the stores adoption weekend events. Cages were set up in isles around the store with cats for adoption. I stopped to look at the cats one of the rescues had set up. The rescue's representative asked if I was interested in seeing any of the cats and "no" immediately came out of my mouth. I explained I was buying cat and kitten food because in the last few months I had taken in two kittens that were born to feral cats I feed. It was suggested I get my feral females fixed. Of course, I didn't have a clue how I would do this or the funds either. The rescue rep turned out to be the executive director, Christie. She handed me her business card and offered help. She helped my neighbor and myself raise the necessary funds and we were able to TNR ten cats including my two kittens moms. I love cats and became a volunteer. I cannot express the joy and satisfaction I get volunteering for this awesome organization. The care and love our rescues receive is second to none. Being part of Karma Cat as given me the privledge of participating in TNR and spreading the word of its importance. I am honored and proud to be part of this organization.

Two years ago, when looking for a cause/organization to volunteer my time with, I found KarmaCat+ZenDog. Fond of animals, I decided to apply for the volunteer position and the rest is history. But, it's a unique history. From day one, I was thoroughly impressed with the selfless dedication that the founders of the organization had. I had low expectations initially, as I figured this to be another rescue organization that just caged and fed animals and nothing more. But the moment I met the first volunteer and the director, etc., I realized this was a labor of love for them. Everyone is truly concerned about the animals and they turn away anyone who isn't. It's an impressively run organization and their number of placements for the animals is a testament to that. Truly a group of dedicated individuals who's hearts are all in the right place and have nothing but the wellness of the animals in mind.
