Causes: Crime & Law, Legal Services
Mission: Justice unlocked is a non-profit corporation which provides legal services to poor, underprivileged, and underserved members of indiana's population who cannot afford a full-priced attorney but do not qualify for free assistance. We provide these services on a sliding scale based on household size and income, ensuring that the majority of our clients pay less than 50% of the prevailing market rates and improving access to justice for the "working poor".
Programs: Our primary, indeed service, is providing legal representation to members of the community who otherwise would lack access to competent attorneys. During 2017 we performed a total of 307 intakes from members of the community requesting legal services. Of those, we provided legal representation in family law, landlord/tenant, domestic violence/sexual assault cases to a total of 112 individuals who had new cases opened. This does not include the roll-over of cases that were started in 2016 but not yet finished in 2017. On average, we provide 12 hours of legal work to each client, though the standard deviation is high because of the unpredictable nature of family law litigation. Salaries for the legal professionals required to provide services makes up the bulk of this program expense.
