sail program - summer adventures in learning (sail) is a collective community impact project that works to help students overcome summer learning loss. Junior league of huntsville and other funders, our three local public school districts, the schools foundation, and the community foundation of greater huntsville, work collaboratively to improve student educational outcomes during the summer. Data shows that summer learning loss accounts for nearly two-thirds of the ninth-grade achievement gap in reading. This achievement gap disproportionately impacts low-income students, in part due to the "opportunity gap" with regard to access to summer high quality enrichment opportunities. Participation in an effective summer learning program can not only reverse this learning loss and yield learning gains instead, but it can also benefit a student for at least two years afterwards. Sail acknowledges a community problem, advances a shared vision, and offers a collaborative solution to the issue of summer learning loss for many local students. Students benefit from sail by achieving learning gains, not losses, during the summer; participating in fun enrichment activities; and receiving enhanced opportunities for student success. Approximately 200 students received engaging and high quality instruction at the three sail sites in summer 2017. Their star test results demonstrated gains of 1. 2 months in math and 2 months in reading due to their participation in the program. The students participated at no cost to the family.
the one on one program - let's read initiative, in partnership with huntsville housing authority, was created in 2016 in response to a rezoning of title 1 school students to higher performing elementary schools within the city of huntsville. This transition created an opportunity for our volunteers to provide literacy resources to those residing in rezoned communities. The one on one: let's read program is unique because it focuses on the entire family by providing literacy resources for children as well as encouraging and supporting parental involvement. The goal is to improve reading skills and to foster a love of reading by providing literacy resources that may otherwise be unavailable. Family literacy nights are held on a bi-monthly basis within a huntsville housing authority community to provide youth and adult programming aimed at literacy and to build relationships within the community. In its initial year (2016-17), one on one: let's read served approximately 100 families, distributed roughly 900 books throughout the school year, and supplied 130 workbooks to help prevent the summer slide, the tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year.
