Mission: Joslyn art museum collects, preserves, and interprets the visual arts of the highest quality, fostering appreciation and enjoyment of art for the benefit of a diverse audience.
Programs: Presentation: during 2017 193,215 visited the museum to view permanent and temporary collections and attend various events. During 2017, the european galleries of our permanent collection were reinstalled adding updated scholarly interpretation and several significant new acquisitions. The following exhibitions were on display in addition to our permanent collection wild spaces, open seasons: hunting and fishing in american art, bijoux parisiens: french jewelry from the petit palais, paris, and marks of genius: 100 extraordinary drawings from the minneapolis institute of art. Three exhibitions were featured in the riley contemporary artists project gallery. 32 works of art were acquired.
education: the mission of joslyn's criss center for education is to equip the general public with skills to enjoy, understand, appreciate, and engage with art of various time periods and cultures. To this end, the center provides interpretive programming in a variety of formats tailored to different learning styles. Specifically, joslyn addresses the needs of a general adult audience, university faculty and students, k-12 teachers and students, families, and youth-at-risk. Through guided tours, lectures, gallery talks, outreach programs, classes, camps, programs for teachers, and special events, the center for education strives to provide quality arts education experiences for its diverse constituencies. During 2017, 131,811 people attended tours, lectures, gallery talks, special programs for adults, art classes, camps and community events at joslyn. This included 44,500 people who visited art works: a place for curiosity.
preservation: in formation since 1931, joslyn art museum's collection now contains more than 11,000 works of art from all over the world antiquity to the present, with a concentration on the 19th and 20th century european and american art. Highlights of the permanent collection include works by lorenzo di credi, titian, el greco, veronese, claude de lorrain, edgar degas, claude monet, pierre august renoir, and camille pissarro. American masters such as albert bierstadt, thomas hart benton, mary cassatt, thomas eakins, winslow homer, john steuart curry, grant wood, jackson pollock, dale chihuly, and george segal are also represented. Joslyn is renowned for its collection of art of the american west and known worldwide for its collection of swiss artist karl bodmer's watercolors and prints documenting his 1832-34 journey to the missouri river frontier with german prince maxmillian of wied. During 2017, 1 artwork was conserved.
