I love the programs that JFS has to serve the community and fill the needs that help people with their food pantry, case management and congregate meal services and other services for the elderly.
Jewish Family Service of San Diego is an incredible organization dedicated to helping the community at large. Their mission is so successfully accomplished because of the amazing staff and board of directors who work tirelessly to meet the needs of the local population.
We support JFS financially and volunteer for the Safe Parking Program which provides meals for people living in their cars. We have organized groups of a dozen individuals who prepare hot, nutritious meals and then serve the food to the people living within JFS property. We eat with our dinner guests and engage in interesting conversations. Since COVID 19 restrictions limit person contact now, we have hosted dinners by purchasing meals and delivering them to the JFS location. We truly look forward to the day when we can return to having homecooked meals with the individuals taking part in the Safe Parking Program.

JFS responds to the true and pressing needs of the community using a systematic and collaborative approach. The staff is top-notch, the programs are impactful, and JFS's work makes a difference.
I am a volunteer on the Behavioral Health Committee at JFS and have had the pleasure and
priviledge to work closely with staff member, Dana Levin, Director of Signature Advancement
Events. Dana is responsible for the annual Gala Fundraiser and also for the annual Behavioral
Health Luncheon, bringing a keynote speaker who presents on some aspect of behavioral
health. This community event is educational and very informative and gets rave reviews from audience members ... mental health workers, consumers and family members of
consumers, and provides help and resources for those who are seeking assistance. I could go on and on about JFS and the outstanding services provided, from the Corner Food Market to the Safe Parking Lots for homeless, to the Senior Centers and memory care, to
Transportation Services for seniors, Case Management Services, and so much more! JFS,
San Diego is here for the entire community, not only for the Jewish Community, and I will
close by saying that a non jewish member of the community said that the only social service
agency to which she donates is JFS, because she recognizes the professionalism, dedication, commitment and caring provided to its clients.
I don’t have anxiety every day about layoffs that many people in the country are facing right now during these uncertain times.. I have our CEO Howard Pearl, Supervisors and staff at CARS to thank for this, the support and encouragementis priceless.
If I were to choose one thing that I’m most grateful for within Charitable Adult Rides and Services it would be the people.
Each individual within the company is an incredible driving force and when we all work together as one mechanism, moving in the same direction, amazing accomplishments can be attained.
Working as a Donor Support Representative is truly incredible and rewarding work.
The care and love that JFS San Diego has for their community is awe-inspiring. Touring their facility gave me insight and compassion for their mission and the thousands of people they serve. JFS San Diego provides secure shelter, transportation, food, job resources, and companionship for our fellow citizens who have a lack of resources, and the care they provide is commendable. Above all, each person who walks through their doors is treated with dignity and respect. Thank you JFS San Diego for all you do!
JFS is truly making an impact in our community. They are helping people get back on their feet with dignity each and every day.
Jewish Family Service of San Diego is truly one of the most impactful agencies in the San Diego region. It also does a fantastic job of pivoting to the needs of the community, whether it be to support older adults who wish to continue living independently, asylum seekers looking for a new home, families and individuals living out of their cars, those needing help with food or diverse audiences with mental health support. JFS is dedicated to serve those of all faiths, backgrounds and ages, and its staff is fully dedicated to helping others. I am continually impressed by JFS and incredibly grateful for all it does for our community.
The amazing work JFS does never seizes to amaze me. And the pivot they made with Covid has been unprecedented. From delivering 30,000 meals a week to seniors who can't leave their homes, to the drive through no questions asked food assistance program, they always find a way to help those in need. Thank you JFS for all you do for the whole community, not just the Jewish community.
This is a phenomenal organization with such an important mission. I have been involved with the organization, as both a professional and as a volunteer, for more than 6 years. As a volunteer with the On The Go program, I drive seniors to dialysis, water aerobics, and doctor's appointments. This is an incredibly fulfilling way for me to give back to the community and help seniors who no longer drive and who would otherwise be home-bound and isolated.
JFS San Diego is an exceptional nonprofit organization in Southern California, which I know personally as a former employee and current donor. JFS staff are passionate, strategic, and exceptionally hard working in service to the entire community. I have been particularly moved by the difference they make in the lives of isolated older adults and refugees, who often have no other place to turn for support and companionship during difficult times. After 2.5 years working in administration, I also know first-hand that JFS makes the most of every donor dollar and is uniquely committed to proving its impact for clients and the wider San Diego community.
I am a brand new hire for JFS. I feel so lucky to have the opportunity to join such an incredible team. I was impressed by their services and reputation before I started, and now am even more blown away by the commitment and dedication JFS has towards making an impact.
The staff care a great deal for each and every client. Their heart and soul goes into making people feel safe, loved, and self-sufficient. I was a staff member for many years and had the privilege of witnessing the caseworkers, caregivers, and supporters. There are countless success stories; countless heroic battles won; countless smiles on the road to recovery. I whole-heartedly believe in the work of JFS and the people it supports.
Working with Jewish Family Service of San Diego is so rewarding. The staff are kind and caring and truly make a difference in people's lives.
It's been my experience that JFS takes as much great care of its staff as it does those persons who interact with the organization. The services are professional, relevant, and respect the person seeking support. It's a perfect place to work, volunteer, or get help!
Volunteering in the Corner Market is a rewarding experience! I get to interact with clients in need and get to provide a service that allows me to reflect on my own privileges. It's amazing to see clients walk in for the first time and watch them leave with a smile as I accompany them on their way out to help unload. Who knew such a simple service can give the community their dignity back and make them feel whole again.
Jewish Family Service of San Diego provides the highest quality of supports to individuals who are marginalized and impoverished in the San Diego community. They are truly the vanguard of the social service community in the San Diego area and are constantly refining their craft through review of community needs and internal practices. By far the best.
Jewish Family Service of San Diego helped me get out of the hole I was in financially. I now have a great job and couldn't be more thankful. Without them, I don't know where I'd be right now.
I have never been treated so well by all the people I've known these last 12 years. Thank you all for saving me from all the horrible disorders I've suffered these last 18 years. The mental health program is top rated. I was at numerous private doctors and HMO's and they were more concerned about how much money they were making. I have unlimited mental health coverage that pays 100percent. JFS was there for me. I was very distraught 3 months ago and couldn't find anyone to help me. I walked into JFS. The lady said someone will see you today. I was so happy that I found someone who could help me. I came in to see if I could make an appointment, and I was seen within 10 minutes. The young lady was an angel sent from heaven. I don't remember her name but I will be eternally grateful for her immediate support. She directed me and offered me her undivided attention, and kindness overflowing. I am a better man today for her unselfish guidance. The other great thing about JFS is they accept you, regardless of your religious status or beliefs. Thank-you all for helping me. Sincerely, David Catalano
JFS has been rated Charity Navigator's highest rating for the 7th year in a row!!! Only 2% of nonprofits NATIONWIDE have achieved such high standards of sound fiscal management, accountability and transparency!! Over 50 programs serving the entire community regardless of religious affiliation including senior transportation, food pantry, senior centers and MORE! LOVE JFS...they are dedicated to making the world a better place.
I can't say enough good things about JFS of San Diego! My late mother benefited from JFS geriatric care management services for nine years, and I'm convinced the quality of her life was greatly enhanced and the length of her life was extended through the support of JFS programs. She was able to "age in place" in her home until eleven days before her death, thanks to JFS' care management, transportation (On the Go), delivered meals (Foodmobile), provision of supplemental food (Hand Up Food Pantry) and home modification for seniors (Fix-It Service).
As an only surviving child living 3,000 miles away, JFS programs and, more importantly, JFS staff addressed my fears and concerns regarding the specifics of my mother's aging, health issues and living independently. JFS was an absolute life line for me.
Jewish Family Service of San Diego has an incredible breadth and depth of services that they provide to older adults throughout the County. The support they provide meets the social, psychological, financial, transportation, and nutrition needs of many seniors. But what distinguishes JFS of San Diego is the commitment and caring that they show in every encounter with an older adult.
Jewish Family Service is a top notch organization and one that I am proud to support in many different ways. They are efficient and effective with my money and ensure that the maximum amount possible is used for programs and client services, which I very much appreciate. They have excellent customer service and handle all transactions - from donor giving to client needs - professionally and confidentially. Their On the Go senior transportation program helps ensure my grandma can socialize with her friends and their Hand Up Food Pantry supports those in our community in need with food, which I have helped to both package at their facility and distribute to people at a church site downtown.
Jewish Family Service is a mainstay in our community offering comprehensive services for every age. I love volunteering with JFS – I know that the work I do and that the agency does is directly benefiting people in our community. Their slogan “We’re With You” is spot on.
We've participated in the Embrace-a-Family program at JFS for the last 3 years. It is such a wonderful way to make a HUGE difference in someone's life. The recipients of the gifts are truly, truly grateful. The thank-you letters that you receive from your families are so heartfelt and touching, it is impossible NOT to cry. My family looks forward to Embrace-a-Family every year. Our involvement has inspired other friends and family members to forgo their own gift exchanges and instead give to those most in need in their communities.
The program itself is incredibly well-managed and extremely organized. With 500+ families receiving gifts, that says a lot! It is just another reflection on how wonderful Jewish Family Service is as a whole and how efficient they are in providing 50+ programs and services throughout San Diego County. I heard that they received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for the 6th year in a row...and only 3% of the organizations reviewed have earned that! Wow! All the more reason to volunteer with and donate to this incredible agency.
This group has many wonderful programs helping many hundreds of people in need. I volunteer for On the Go transportation service, the Fix-it service, and occasionally Food Pantry. It is most gratifying and rewarding when recipients are crying in gratitude that a volunteer will give their time and energy to help a total stranger in need. I have many positive memories which justifies the time I spend working these programs. There is so much need and to few people who want to render help.
I am an On The Go driver...what a great experience this is for me. Almost every one of my riders tells me how much they appreciate this service...how they couldn't get to & from "wherever" without this service. You can just imagine how great that makes me feel. I get as much out of this as they do!!
I have been a volunteer driver for Jewish Family Service's Rides and Smiles Program and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I couldn't have imagined that getting our elderly to the places they need to go, could be so much fun and feel so worthwhile. The program is so well run, so simple, so efficient, so necessary and the drivers and clients are made to feel so valued and appreciated. I was so impressed by Rides and Smiles, I decided to join the Board. This confirmed the view I already had that Jewish Family Service is truly an outstanding organization, committed to serving the vulnerable in our community with compassion, integrity and excellence. Its an honor to be associated with JFS.
I have been a board member and volunteer for over 15 years and can say that Jewish Family Service of San Diego has given me much more of a reward than I could have ever expected. I'm involved as a volunteer with one of the JFS Senior Centers and I derive a lot of satisfaction from seeing the benefits that it provides to our seniors during their difficult aging process. The organization is very efficiently run - proof of which is their 4 Star Charity Navigator rating which is given to less than 5% of all non-profits in the country.
My volunteer experience with Jewish Family Service of San Diego has been so fulfilling, whether distributing food with the Hand Up Food Pantry and Embracing a Family during the holidays. I like knowing the my time and donations are going to good use within my community. Now as an employee, I am proud to know that someone who comes in with just one need can be helped in all aspects, food, employment, counseling and more!
I volunteered with JFSSD for over 2 years with the Hand Up Youth Food Pantry. JFS is an amazing organization that makes a huge impact in San Diego. I have seen the work that the dedicated people at JFS do change so many lives. I would recommend that anyone who is interested in volunteering check this organization out because there are so many different ways to get involved.
Jewish Family Services is an amazing organization that helps so many people in so many ways. My husband injured himself at work and we are now living on the workers compensation he gets, which is a lot less than his regular work income before the injury. We have had trouble paying bills and buying groceries and such and the Hand Out Youth Food Pantry helped us with our food needs. They were a huge help for a very difficult time for us. Now things are starting to improve and we hope to be able to give back to JFS San Diego to help others who are struggling like we did.
I have been a volunteer for over 2 yrs, I work with a refugee family from Burma. The time I spend with them is awesome. They give me much more than I could give them. They are family to me. JFS has done wonders in the lives of newly arrived refugees.
I had the joy to intern with JFSSD this past summer, and as I learned more about the 50+ amazing programs they had, I was so grateful that all my work was really contributing to making a difference in many people's lives. From interviewing experienced volunteers to seeing one of the Senior Centers in action to meeting with the kind and dedicated volunteers and staff, people at JFSSD really care about helping others, and they do it well. I know that this is so general and broad, but it is difficult to express just how excellent this organization is! I look forward to working with or for them again, in any kind of volunteer work. (Also check out their amazing 4 - or is it 5? - -star rating on Charity Navigator, for something like 7 years in a row! They really know what they're doing!)
As a parent leader for a local group of middle school volunteers, I've been to many different local community service projects and the most effective, well run projects have been run by JFSSD. They are extremely well-organized, efficient and committed to helping the under-served populations throughout San Diego. For example, although it's difficult to believe, many local military families struggle with the cost of feeding their families, especially if they arrive in San Diego from other parts of the country where the cost of living is less, and a spouse is deployed while the other spouse stays at home managing the family. JFSSD runs events several times a month where our middle school students can become involved distributing food to military families and also get a chance to thank them for their service. This, among other projects run by JFSSD, has made a valuable impact on our community in so many ways. The leaders of JFSSD (and their Hand Up Youth Food Pantry which runs the military food distribution events) are extremely caring and respectful of the military families, responsive, and thoroughly professional. It is truly a pleasure to watch them in action, and they deserve to be recognized by Great Nonprofits!
I have been so impressed with the directors and staff of JFS (San Diego) for ten years now. One director calls hundreds of people a year to help raise money for seniors, and he helped start a senior center. Another director had a passion to build the top fundraising gala in San Diego, and the Gala nets almost $1 mm per year now. Another director is a busy partner at a top law firm, with young kids, who still spends hundreds of hours a year helping the agency. A past director first volunteered to help people when he volunteered to serve in WWII at age 18, and when I started serving, he was always in the room as a voice of wisdom and care for the clients. Heroes abound, at JFS. The client letters touch your heart, and the staff really care about clients. One has JFSSD on his license plate, another told us how he feels the responsibility to be sure all emails to the information line get a good, timely, caring answer, and other staffers have built so many innovative programs, ranging from a food pantry staffed by teenagers, to a "Rides and Smiles" program for volunteers to take seniors to the doctor or the market. You have to love what the people here have done, many of them giving THOUSANDS of hours and without asking for anything in return. Just coming together at one unifying agency where clients, caring people, dollars, and skilled professionals converge. Restores your faith!
I have been volunteering for JFSSD for many years. Their range of services is so comprehensive that it is truly "one source for a lifetime of help". From a food pantry to support for victims of domestic violence, from a home delivered meal system to homebound seniors to private counseling, to a program that aids unemployed workers, to a support program for single parents, JFSSD helps so many people in both the Jewish and general community that my affiliation with this wonderful human service agency is a source of pride for me and my family. This agency is truly a San Diego gem. Nadja Kauder
This organization's first priority is the person they are helping. I think that speaks volumes in itself. If you are looking for a place to volunteer will you will be able to see your impact, I encourage you to volunteer for the Food Pantry, On the Go (senior transportation), Foodmobile or the many other programs that allow you to actually deliver a vital service. Very rewarding.
I lost my job, and no matter how many times I applied to new jobs I got no responses. I almost wanted to give up but know that isn't an option with my son to support. I actually heard about the JEN program from a friend of a friend and attended a great workshop on fixing my resume and more ways to look for jobs that i didn't know about. It was very, very helpful and they made me feel hopeful again.
I volunteer for Foodmobile and delivered food to an 84 year-old-widow who had been in bad health most of her life. A back problem forced her to stay in her home most of the time. She told me she had been a very social person, was always going places, doing things, and seeing people. With her injury, she became very isolated, depressed and anxious. She was not able to shop for food or prepare meals because of her physical limitations. She called Foodmobile and found new friends. I really feel like we not only fed her body, but her soul!
