Mission: Jefferson County Horse Evacuation Assistance Team,AKA: Jeffco HEAT was formed to safely provide the highest quality of large animal evacuation assistance in times of fires, natural disasters, vehicle accidents and impounds. This volunteer group will provide assistance primarily to Jefferson County, Colorado, but is willing to help other entities when in need. This service will be provided by demonstrating consistency, reliability and professionalism. Furthermore, each animal will be handled with the care, dignity, respect and attention to safety which they deserve.
Results: Jeffco HEAT celebrated it's 10 year of non profit status in 2013 and 14 years in helping horses and other large animals along Colorado's front range. We have assisted in moving over 3000 large animals during wildfires, impounds, vet calls, vehicle accidents and other misfortunes animals can find themselves facing.
Target demographics: Large animal evacuations during disasters. Jeffco HEAT also assists authorities during animal abuse and neglect cases as well as rescuing horses during accidents
Direct beneficiaries per year: Evacuate over 700 horses during the Black Forest, Lime Gulch and Bluebell Fires. Assisted local fire agency in the rescue of horse that fell though Ice, Assisted Animal Control with cruelty, neglect case for 18 horses, Assisted neighboring case in the rescue and housing of 2 abandoned horses
