Mission: The mission of Art for Autism and the Artistas Café program is to “Change Lives One Bean at a Time” through art programs and job skills training, internships, and employment of individuals with autism, providing them the opportunity for independent, productive and happier lives.
Results: At the age of 21, a student with a disability such as autism “ages out” of the school system and is no longer eligible to attend. At this point, most of these former students (estimated to be between 85 - 90%) lack the necessary skills to seek employment and languish at home with no hope for an independent life. People with autism have a cognitive disability that makes it difficult to process information in a typical way. Because of the specific learning styles of people with autism, a lengthy training period which utilizes specialized teaching tools to meet the needs of our trainees is required to help them eliminate the barriers they frequently have to securing meaningful employment. We will use a formal assessment tool that we secured from the University of Florida to evaluate communication and social skills. In addition, we will also assess the Artistas’ multi-tasking skills, technical skills (beverage making), and overall effectiveness. We are proud to state that in our flagship Café, we have achieved a 100% success rate with each individual who has come through our training program.
