Mission: To address the social service of persons of japanese ancestry in the greater new york.
Programs: Jassis hotline program provides information and referral services through phone, email, and in-personal counseling. Crisis intervention, case assistance, and companion services to government agencies are provided as needed. During the 2017 fiscal year, jassis staff handled a total of 3,574 cases and assisted 1,274 clients. 1,482 were senior-related cases. The most common inquiries were 1) health insurance, 2) public benefits & entitlements, 3) health/mental health issues, 4) health insurance/benefit enrollment assistance, 5) counseling needs, 6) housing issues, 7) legal issues, 8) financial issues, 9) government system, and 10) medicare. More then 80% of those clients required assistance in japanese, and more than 70% were clients who had low-to-moderate income and qualified for public benefits.
with grants from new york city department for the aging, jassis caregiver support program provides services to those who care for people over 60 years old. Currently, there are 13 caregiver clients. Caregiver support program include: case management (e. G. , home care referrals, public benefits & entitlements assistance) supportive counseling respite care supplemental services support groups
jassis senior program has 465 active members for the 2017 fiscal year. The senior program provides case assistance, friendly visits, hospital escort services, educational workshops and seminars, cultural/social events, distribution of free tickets to cultural events and japanese supermarkets gift certificates, and volunteer opportunities. During the 2017 fiscal year, the senior program provided case assistance to 416 senior clients, 131 friendly visits to eight frail seniors, seven hospital escort services, free medicare seminar, and two wellness workshops led by a physical therapy student. As social events, the senior program held shabu-shabu luncheon and spring gathering sponsored by japanese restaurants in addition to a monthly tea party. Jassi also offered four volunteer opportunities to provide seniors a sense of purpose and accomplishment, to help bridge the generation gap with younger generation, to avoid social isolation, and to promote community invol
jassis community outreach program aims to provide public education and to assist the public in obtaining information relative to jassis programs and activities. Public relations are mainly provided via newsletters, e-newsletters, social media, japanese community online bulletin boards, and japanese local newspapers. During the 2017 fiscal year, jassi accomplished the following: published two newsletters, 22 e-newsletters, one senior newsletter, 12 senior e-newsletters, 40 articles through the japanese community online bulletin boards, and 28 articles through the local newspapers. Jassi also provided eight seminars and workshops. Additionally, a total of 50,385 individuals visited jassis website to seek social services-related information.
