Years ago - decades ago I was looking for a private research organization doing pure and applied research as opposed organizations dedicated to helping people with immediate problems, something I thought group like United Way do well.
I settled on Jackson Lab, then known mainly for its work breeding mice that mimic - or have - human diseases that need study. They expanded in the last decade to add genomic work that is often supported by the mouse side producing mice for the new studies.
While they do get much of their funding from research grants, they appreciate the donations from others, like me, as that helps fund things from facilities to putting on presentations and webinars.
They do not need to aggressively fund raise, and hence I get no tear jerking, arm twisting pleas for more money, nor is fund raising a significant part of their budget . However, JAX (nickname) will continue to do pretty well from me.
