Mission: To prevent pediatric HIV and AIDS in Zimbabwe, Africa. To prevent the transmission of HIV from mother to child. To educate children through the foundation of preschools, tuition fee support, purchasing textbooks and awarding scholarships. To aid the families of children born with cerebral palsy.
Geographic areas served: Zimbabwe, Africa
Programs: Preschool/ecd/child health program - there is an estimated 1 million orphans and vulnerable children in zimbabwe. The trust works to support the youngest and most vulnerable children and their families within their local communities by establishing preschools within local primary schools. These preschools are maintained and managed locally and also serve as child health care centers. At the preschools, youngsters receive nutritional support, basic health care, immunizations, educational opportunities, and emotional support. Adults in the community attend workshops at the preschools to learn about nutrition, health promotion, parenting and hiv prevention. The preschool program also allows the children's caregivers, often elderly grandparents, to work or rest while the children attend preschool. This program reached approximately 18,000 children during this program year.
children's reabilitation unit (cru) - the trust has a growing program to assist children with disabilities and their caregivers. While the majority of children served in this program have cerebral palsy, children with downs syndrome, hearing loss and a wide variety of other forms of disability also receive services at the program sites we support. The jf kapnek trusts program works in partnership with the ministry of health and ministry of social services to provide physical therapy, medical assistance and training, as well as a psycho-social support community for these often-isolated families. More than 12,000 children were assisted through this program during this program year.

My family has been volunteering with JF Kapnek since 2004 when my oldest daughter was in the 6th grade. Our focus has been supporting the pediatric AIDS orphans through the preschool program that Kapnek supports. Kapnek's amazing work with the women and children of Zimbabwe is crucial to stopping the cycle of AIDS in the country. With devastating inflation in the country, there is little money to purchase minimal supplies-even if the supplies were available. So donations to Kapnek are absolutely integral in the success of the programs. We have focused on gathering preschool supplies, paper, crayons etc. that will enhance the early childhood education for the beautiful children of Zimbabwe who are affected by the AIDS crisis. And yet, with the devastation around them, the smiles of the children say it all. They are joyful and full of hope because of the security provided by JF Kapnek. What is amazing is that more than 96% of the donations to Kapnek go to directly supporting the program in Zimbabwe.
This organization does great work in Zimbabwe, especially in pediatric AIDS medicine and in its preschool program there. Its efforts make a huge difference in many aspects of life there: medical care, child care, education, and more.
I volunteered with loading the container that Kapnek sends every year to Zimbabwe. Staff there was very dedicated to the cause and the work was very rewarding. It was easy to see how donations in the way of food, medical equipment, clothes, shoes, etc. could make such a difference.
