i have been involved with this organization for over 12 years. I see how hard they work to change the lives of their fellow neighbors in Irving. They are truly the first stop for many families who are facing a financial crisis in their lives. They work to remove all the roadblocks that prevent families from reaching economic stability. The really do care about their neighbors...Great team!!!
I volunteered in the food pantry for 3 years and loved every minute of it. Irving Cares is full of caring, kind individuals who truly want to help the community. Communication with volunteers, security, management of donations and organization of stock/supplies were all very well thought out and efficient. I’d still be there if I hadn’t moved away!
This nonprofit has taken the 2020 challenges with impressive skills. They changed quickly, analyzed the immediate impact and adjusted to make sure their ability to support the community complemented other city and area services to ensure they could get the most out of their efforts.
Irving Cares has a long and outstanding history of helping people in the Irving community get the help they need to get things back on track, whether it's food from the food bank, financial assistance with rent, utilities, etc., or employment training.
Great organization, selfless leadership, giving hope and support to community members in their darkest hours. I am honored to be a part of this organization
Since I know most of the reviews will cover all that they do, I think it is important to also share some background on the community they serve to better understand the value and significance of Irving Cares as an organization. According to the United States Census Bureau’s most recent estimates (2017), the city of Irving is the 13th largest city in Texas and home to the most Fortune 1,000 and 500 global headquarters per capita (www.irvingchamber.com). Another study done by the real estate website Trulia, revealed Irving Care’s zip code to be the single most diverse neighborhood in the country . And yet, the Census Bureau’s 2017 American Community Survey also reports the number of Irving residents living below the poverty line (14.3%) as higher than the national average of 13.4%.
Irving Cares plays a vital role in building economic stability, mobility and community resilience by providing critical services to those in need. No matter how you get involved, your time, dollars and efforts will create invaluable opportunities to develop lifelong relationships and gain rewarding experiences while catalyzing growth and social impact in Irving, Texas.
I have been honored to serve as a board member since 2004. I have seen this organization grow...yet the service and care to the city of Irving residents has remained so personal and thoughtful. The staff and leadership treat the clients like family while offering them a hand up...not a hand out! I look forward to many more opportunities to continue to serve this great organiztion.
Irving Cares is truly an agency that embraces the community it operates in and provides valuable services to its clients who are in need or facing a short term emergency. The staff does it with compassion and with care to all. This year the agency celebrated it's 60th year serving the residents of Irving, TX and that longevity is further testament to the great work of Irving Cares!
Irving Cares does countless things for their community. They not only have a food pantry to help with immediate needs to feed families, but they promote a path to self-sufficiency for those same clients. People who need assistance can participate in their Invest In Yourself program to help them find stable, living-wage employment, education & training, as well as other skills to help on their road to success. As a Board member, I can say, you won't regret volunteering or donating to this worthy organization that does so much for the Irving community.
The new program established by Irving Cares is focused on those who need assistance becoming empowered to reach self-sufficiency. They coach clients on things like resume writing, job searches, credit and budgeting and more. Their food pantry helps folks who might not otherwise be able to feed their family.
They also host a terrific community event with a dinner and auction to raise funds to continue helping those who need it.
I'm an 11-year volunteer and 2-year board member at Irving Cares. It's amazing how this non-profit that began in 1957 was able to pivot in March to deal with the COVID crisis. Instead of relying on its many 65+ age volunteers, the organization turned to its small staff to meet client needs. Keeping 6-feet apart and wearing masks, a staffer met briefly with clients and then sent a ticket with the number of family members to the pantry. Here, another staffer packed the sanitized cart and rolled out the cart to the client. We've been doing this for six months now and it has worked seamlessly. Volunteers are slowly returning, but as a board member and volunteer myself, I've been impressed with the efficiency and compassion the staff has shown to its clientele while at the same time keeping up with their jobs.
Irving Cares lives up to its name. The agency truly does care about Irving. Founded in 1957 by Irving residents following a devastating tornado, the organization began as an all-volunteer entity. Today it is comprised of a 13-member staff assisted by 463 volunteers. It is a three-pronged organization consisting of the Emergency Assistance Program (EAP), the Employment Services Program (ESP) and the Patient Transportation Program (PTP). The largest component is EAP which includes the food pantry. Currently, Irving Cares provides food to about 50 families PER DAY! The food pantry is staffed entirely by volunteers who fill the food orders, meet with clients, and help with pickups and deliveries of food. The Employment Services Program helps families get back on their feet after the loss of a job. And the Patient Transportation Program allows chronically ill residents without transportation to keep their medical appointments.
It has truly been my privilege to be involved at Irving Cares for the past 3 years. The work this long term organization does is incredibly valuable to Irving residents and makes an impact on our community as a whole. What started as a response to tornadoes in Irving and West Dallas in 1957 to our current work providing: food pantry, rent assistance, utility assistance, job training and retraining, educational opportunities, case work management, and the best new program providing financial and holistic training for members of our community in need. I highly recommend Irving Cares.
Irving Cares helps make Irving a great place to live, work, and play. They do not just give a handout to those in need, but they work with them to learn job skills and assist them with finding a job. They provide for basic needs, plus they give hope to those going through dark moments in their life. Thank you Kyle and Team for your concern and hard work that makes Irving an outstanding city.
As a volunteer, I have seen amazing work done and positive results for the Irving community. Irving Cares is a valuable asset to everyone.
Irving Cares has been around for over 50 years!!! How many local home grown nonprofits can say that? Irving Cares has an amazing team of volunteers and staff. Every time I walk thru the offices everyone is happy and friendly. Helping others.... that is what comes to mind when I think about Irving Cares. They help our community, families and individuals in need and they do it with pride.
Had the pleasure of volunteering for this amazing organization during their planning stages of their largest fund raiser of the year. Plus, I’ve been able to send multiple crews from our supportive local employer to volunteer within the food pantry. The work and support that this organization provides to the community is priceless. We are so thankful for Kyle and his entire team. Thank you for being there for our community members in need. God bless.
I Volunteer on Monday afternoons in the Food Pantry and I'm entering my 15th year with Irving Cares. I gladly contribute my time, talent and money to support this caring organization and it's staff. Many good people provide hope and assistance to the many in need in a positive and professional manner. The Irving Cares Motto Is True- - -We Offer A Hand Up NOT A Hand Out.
I have been a volunteer at Irving Cares for about 10 years. A strong staff and many many dedicated non paid volunteers who treat clients with dignity and respect. I'm proud to be a small part of this fine organization. I enjoy being both a donor and volunteer.
Irving Cares has been an amazing organization to volunteer with! Participants of Irving really do appreciate the help up from their programs. In fact, I was at Tom Thumb last night and was confirming my Tom Thumb card was giving back to the Irving Cares through their Good Neighbor Program and the customer service staff member helping me was a previous participant in their programs. The programs helped her get back on her feet and helped her get a full time position that could pay all the bills. Thanks you Irving Cares for all your great work in the community!
My company has been a long-time partner of this organization and encouraged me to get involved in various ways; food drives, fundraising, virtual drives and assisting with training on any professional skills that are related to their services. I love that I can help with time as well as donations. I will continue to be an advocate for this charity when I learn someone is need and lives in Irving.
I work in Irving and am a contributor to Irving Cares because not only do they feed the hungry in this community, they provide much needed training and other help to give their clients what they need to land a job, or an even better one so they can support themselves and their families.
I had the pleasure of volunteering at Irving Cares and left with an amazing perspective of what they do for the community. Everyone who came there for food was so grateful. Irving Cares does an OUTSTANDING job and is crucial to the Irving community. I look forward to volunteering there again in the future!
I have been volunteering at Irving Cares for over 3 years now and am very proud to work with this organization. Customers are treated with respect and compassion. I have seen people come in looking very stressed and when they leave they look relaxed and hopeful. Irving Cares serves a real need in our community helping people get back on their feet.
While volunteering at Irving Cares, I noticed a woman come in who was visibly upset. She came in and spoke to a case manager for some time. The case manager was very kind and took her time with the conversation. I saw the woman leaving after their visit and she was smiling and obviously relieved.
Irving Cares offers a valuable service to the citizens of Irving who need a little help. I'm very proud to be associated with this wonderful organization.
The Irving Cares team provides such an awesome service to our community. I've donated, attended the Great Harvest and volunteered many times and I always come away with thinking "wow, these people do great things here." The best thing I feel is what their slogan says - "Hand up, not a hand out". Irving Cares not only gives their clients help with immediate needs but also tools to help provide for a better future. Additionally when there is a crisis such as a hurricane, they rally and act as a funnel for a lot of the relief efforts in the community. I'm proud to continue to support Irving Cares and the great work they do for our people.
I am the administrative assistant at one of the middle schools here in Irving. I had a parent come into my office last week seeking any and all assistance for her children and herself. I called Julia Black at Irving Cares and Julia not only had groceries and diapers pulled and ready for pick up, she had information gathered for me to give to the mom and had me give the mom her name to offer any additional counsel she could. I am humbled by the generosity of my fellow Irvingites and people like Julia who give of themselves daily. Thank you Irving Cares - you do!
I first became involved at Irving Cares as a volunteer in the food pantry. It felt so great to help people in my home town. As I became more familiar with the agency, I learned that Irving Cares is more than a food pantry. They offer help with rent, utilities, employment and other services. The staff and volunteers are knowledgeable and caring. They provide services in an atmosphere of dignity and respect know that it's hard to ask for help.
Irving Cares stays very active in the local community. All members are committed to making a difference and care about their work. This non-profit is unique in that they successfully create relationships with businesses and, besides fulfilling their mission, bring the community together.
Irving Cares is both a great volunteer opportunity and community services organization. I feel privileged to have given 4-6 hours per week for six years at this well-run food pantry and social services provider in my city. There are so many volunteers who have worked longer and harder than I, and their dedication is contagious! I have met so many caring people, and I plan to stay at IC as long as I can.
The staff is extremely dedicated to the clients - our neighbors - and show appreciation for me each time I am there. I am totally impressed by the Case Managers who lovingly assist an average of 45-65 clients per day, five days a week, exhibiting patience and professionalism. They refer clients to other organizations in our area for special or additional help. The job-help program and weekly employment seminar is important to our people and managed beautifully. Our CEO and her small administrative staff are friendly, dedicated, and adept at keeping all the parts of the machine functioning expertly. Thank you all for the huge job you do so well and for including me. ~~ S. Gans, Irving resident.
I've only been acquainted with Irving Cares in my city for five years. I retired and needed a new mission, a re-purposing of my everyday activities. I chose Irving Cares at first because it is local and close to my home, but now I have found a place, new friends, and a worthwhile volunteer activity. Working with the clients who are my fellow citizens is both rewarding and challenging. IC is small enough for me to know almost everyone. I can participate in the procedures from beginning to end. Getting to assist the dedicated staff members and working side by side with fellow volunteers is a joy.
Healthcare Associates has worked with Irving Care now for 5 years. We host a casino night every year and they are the best to work with. They are so helpful with helping me put this on. They are always there and willing to do whatever is needed to make this night the best night possible and to make it raise the most money for their organization. They always go above and beyond to make things happen. I really appreciate all they do for our community. Glad we connected with them and will always be willing to help Irving Cares.
I have now worked at Irving Cares for 10 plus years. I use the term work rather than just volunteer as it a pleasure to work and to serve those families who need a hand up. It really is like work because I enjoy it and despite not being paid for it, it gives me as much satisfaction as work used to.
Irving Cares provides great service to the community whether it is providing emergency food assistance, employment search guidance, or referral services. I walk out the door after volunteering feeling uplifted, that somehow we are able to help each other. I'm honored to be a part of this organization.
To the Staff and Volunteers at Irving Cares:
Moved. Touched. Inspired! Those are the feelings I came away with after a morning spent at Irving Cares this week. I am so amazed by not only the many and varied resources available here, but also by the active participation of your community, businesses and individuals alike, working together to bring a ray of light and hope into the lives of your Irving neighbors who might find themselves in need of a helping hand.
After a quick tour of the facility, I had the privilege of seeing the impressive food bank in action, attending one of the Wednesday Job Search workshops, and sitting in on a case interview. I met some of the wonderful, dedicated people of Irving Cares who make this non profit organization such a growing success, and whose spirit of genuine care, concern, and respect, is positively uplifting.
Irving Cares, thank you for sharing your morning -- and your vision with me. Keep up the good work!
I have been a volunteer for only a few years but it is very fulfilling. They are very caring and work hard to supply for the needs of our clients.
I have been a volunteer in the food pantry since 2008. It was a great organization at that time, and I was honored to be a part of it. Since then, it's gotten even better. Under Teddy Story's careful and thoughtful management, and Kyle Taylor's ability to squeeze water from a stone, (i.e. wrangle and organize many more retail contributors, line up more volunteer groups), it has gained greater efficiency and served hundreds more each year since I started. The staff and office volunteers are hard working and dedicated. Irving Cares IS a Great Nonprofit!
Having worked for several years at Irving Cares I am so happy with the support given to families by filling baskets of food with both fresh and canned meat and fresh and canned vegetables. We also brighten the faces of many children with desserts such as brightly decorated cupcakes and other desserts. Fresh bread and dairy products round out the nutritional food we give. Irving Texas is the community that makes this all possible with volunteers that both live and work in the city. Great Harvest is the yearly fundraiser that helps fund the non-profit with many Irvingites giving generously to make it happen.Teddie Story and her staff make all of this possible with their leadership. Great place to volunteer!
I very much enjoy the time I spend here volunteering. The people are wonderful and very caring.
It has been a pleasure to be a volunteer at Irving Cares for the past 10 years. The staff is
kind and compassionate and treats clients with dignity and respect. I volunteer in the
food pantry and it is deeply satisfying to make sure that those who come will leave
with bags of nutritious food for their families. Several years ago I filled an order for a
homeless man who had immigrated to the United States. He didn't have any place to
cook so the request was for "picnic items" only. I did my best to find canned meats,
fruits and vegetables with flip tops but was dismayed that there was so much more
I wished I could give him. When I handed him the sacks, he looked inside and then up
at me. He said, "This is beautiful food. Today I will eat beautiful food. Thank you." It is
a blessing to meet the people who come to Irving Cares for assistance and a joy to serve them.
I have been a volunteer since 2011. It is very rewarding to serve the people and to work with the great staff. Irving Cares is meeting the needs of families in Irving and helping them in many ways to move forward. I am proud to be a part of this great organization!
It has been my pleasure to volunteer at Irving Cares for almost three years. I am a case manager and also do intake a few days a week. It is rewarding to be part of this nonprofit which provides the basic needs to so many in the community. It is a very supportive environment with an extremely dedicated staff. All good!!
I have been contributing to Irving Cares for over 15 years because I believe in their mission of helping people in our community and have been impressed with how they carry it out. I started volunteering as an Intake Greeter about 8 years ago and feel that I'm helping to give back to our community. Our clients seem to sincerely appreciate the help we offer which shows them others care and gives them a reason to be thankful and continue their efforts towards improving their lives.
I spent 4 years as a volunteer at Irving Cares. It has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. In my role as Case Manager, I was able to interact face to face with our clients. It was enlightening and heartbreaking; courage and strength became a two way street; shared laughter and tears were a common occurrence; mutual respect was given and received. And yes, we also have a great food pantry which often includes fresh fruit and vegetables, a job bank and many resources to help clients get back on their feet. Often, encouragement, a warm smile and a kind word helped ease us to the next step. Thank you Irving Cares for the great work you do.
I have served on the board of Irving Cares for more than 10 years. The agency has an amazing staff that truly cares for its clients, the residents of Irving, TX. Everyone is treated fairly and with dignity. As a board member I can attest to the fact that every dollar donated is handled fiscally conservatively and responsibly. This enables the agency to help more people with continuously decreasing amounts of donations and funding.
I have been honored to serve on the board of Irving Cares for 9 years. The CEO, Teddie Story, and the small yet effective staff at IRving Cares are doing yeoman's work serving the community. The organization is run professionally and efficiently, but the clients always receive a dignified and personal touch relative to their specific and unique needs from the staff and volunteers. Irving Cares truly makes a positive impact to the residents of Irving, TX who need a lifeline or some temporary assistance.
Irving Cares employees and volunteers go above and beyond for their community. They may not always be able to help everyone in the way they've asked, but they are on mission to give a hand up to provide help in any way that they possibly can for those facing crisis in Irving. I love the heart of this agency!
Irving Cares continues to provide nutritious food and helpful services with compassion and dignity for Irving residents facing crisis. They truly are a lifeline for the working poor, and have been for over 50 years. I am proud to work with the wonderful staff and volunteers.
I have served on the board of this agency for 4 years. Each year I see how Irving Cares continues to improve by consistently helping clients, being fiscally responsible, and maintaining a solid reputation for the City of Irving and the people they serve. This organization is well respected and plays a vital role in the lives of Irving's citizens. How the client feels when they leave Irving Cares is 100 times different from when they first walked in - that's what a hand up does for someone who needs it.
Sorry to see so many excellent reviews when I had such a lousy experience with this place. I was in the Irving hospital, missed a few weeks of work at my Irving-based job, and needed help paying bills for the Irving house that I rent. Just for one month. It didn't matter that I've lived in Irving all my life (over 50 years). It didn't matter than my family has been here since the 1940s. They refused to help me because I don't have a lease.
Helping Irving residents in need? I don't think so. I won't ask them for help again and I certainly won't be recommending them to anyone else.
Without this group, Irving would have a giant hole in our care to people fallen on hard times. They are a great group of people sponsored by most everyone in Irving.
I have been volunteering at Irving Cares for only a short time but it has been a very rewarding experience. I have been amazed at the work that is put into ensuring that the pantry is stocked with all the appropriate food groups.....nothing is left to chance! Irving Cares does great work to assist our neighbors in need! I am proud to be a part of it.
I have been volunteering at Irving Cares for 6 years. I find it very rewarding to serve the people of Irving that need a hand up.
I work at Irving Cares weekly in the Food Pantry and enjoying seeing all the people both with and without families, and those that have homes and are homeless receive the help they need to get them through at a low point in their life.
Several people have actually shed tears when we have given them food so thankful to have something in their stomach. I am thankful through Irving Cares people can get help in desperate times.
When we wanted to find a way to assist in our community, we could not have done better than to volunteer at Irving Cares. This organization does remarkable and lasting work in Irving, and it does so with remarkable care and attention to every dollar. We know how fortunate we are to be able to serve with this outstanding group and, through them, see good things happen in the city where we live.
Volunteering at Irving Cares is a pleasure. It is an organization that truly cares for people in need. The staff is the greatest. It is fun serving them and watching their faces when they receive their food.
It has been a very rewarding experience volunteering at Irving Cares. When individuals encounter hard times, they know there is a community based facility that will help them out. Irving Cares can help with food, finances, and referrals. It is all good!
I have been volunteering at Irving Cares for a few weeks and have been very impressed by the quality of the services provided and the dedication of the staff and volunteers. There is a genuine commitment to helping those in need and also directing them to other resources available in the community. It has been a rewarding and enjoyable experience.
I am a fairly new volunteer having only been with Irving Cares a little over a year. The reason I picked this Non Profit, is because it is not intended as a way of life, but a helping hand thru a little bump in life's roads.
I volunteer at the Irving Cares Food Pantry and have for several years. I just LOVE doing it. I can clearly see the need in the people who come there. And love to see the joy when they receive their food. Especially enjoy seeing joy on the little children's faces. I know that I am doing something good and sometimes feel like I get more out of it than the clients. Will be doing this for a LONG time, I pray.
I have been volunteering in the food pantry for about a year and a half. I love it!!! It is so rewarding to be a part of providing a temporary help to someone in need. They always say thank you and I feel I should thank them for giving me the pleasure of doing something for them. They are very proud people and there but for the grace of God, I could be in their shoes. I try to always be pleasant with them. I love my job at Irving Cares, and although I'm a "newby" I hope I can do this for many years to come.
I live in Irving. I am thankful that an organization like Irving Cares exists to help the least of us in my community. Losing a job or having an emergency that destroys your finances can happen to anyone. Those situations are humbling. But, at Irving Cares, they help people without heaping shame on them. In emergency situations, you just need a little help to get back on your feet. That's why I like Irving Cares.
Irving Cares is a fantastic organization. As a single person of my age,I really felt uneasy about having to ask for any type of assistance for getting groceries. However, the staff was very friendly and treated me with respect.I am between jobs and simply did not have any groceries left and I was able to get enough food to last at least a week or two untill I start getting a regular paycheck. All the items I received were fresh and some were a better quality than what I buy when I am working.I appreciate and am thankful to all who volunteer, work, donate, or in whatever capacity they help. I am very pleased with my experince at Irving Cares.
I began volunteering at Irving Cares when the arrival of Katrina survivors overwhelmed the ability of this agency to meet their emergency needs. But I have continued to volunteer there each week in the food pantry because of the truly dedicated staff and volunteers. Their commitment to improving the quality of life for Irving residents is outstanding. Each time I work, I am reminded that the opportunity to put good, nutritious food on the table is a blessing that many of us take for granted. I also want to recognize our vendor partners and individuals who donate excess food so that it can be redistributed to our neighbors in need.
Irving Cares provides emergency assistance to citizens of Irving, Texas who are experiencing a financial crisis in their lives. The Irving Cares food pantry has supplied 5 days worth of food for over 900 families within the past month, alone. Other services provided include vouchers for gasoline, payment of utility bills, job search assistance, and transportation to health care providers. The staff and volunteers of Irving Cares are committed to assisting our neighbors with care, compassion, and respect no matter what their circumstances. It is truly a joy to volunteer at Irving Cares each week.
Irving Cares meets basic human needs with compassion, customer service and experience. Its long-tenured staff is rare compared to "revolving doors" @ most agencies. I applaud board and staff for making specific pantry/funding asks, diversifying revenue sources & board composition. Service delivery with a temporary crisis focus gets clients on track. I routinely refer clients, prospective employees or volunteers, corporate citizens and community leaders knowing they will enjoy the association. As a governance consultant, it's marvelous when 501c3s take process improvement and marketing goals seriously. I'm blessed to see this former client improve in key arenas since 2011 goal-setting.
Irving Cares goal of "a hand up, not a hand out" says it all to me. They make amazing things happen with the thinnest of resources, and the biggest of hearts and heads from a very small staff and an expanding group of volunteers. Every dollar matters, every jar of peanut butter given matters, and they make sure of it. They are changing lives every single day in ways that restore dignity and trust and faith, and they bring about healing and hope because of it. The number of people living below the poverty level (or barely at it) isn't shrinking in our community. That weighs heavily on the hearts of the staff and volunteers that are Irving Cares every single day.
Irving Cares provides a beyond-vital service to the community - they truly make a difference, they are committed to their cause, they look for ways to reach beyond those they can serve directly. They truly preach and believe that it is a "hand up" and not a "hand out" and they are truly making a difference. The lives they touch, touch many other lives. It is amazing what they accomplish with such a small staff, but they make every hour and every penny count. Their volunteers are beyond committed. They truly are an extension of the staff's priorities, with the community's best interests at heart. All truly exemplify true servant leadership.
i lost my job and needed help finding work. the people at Irving cares helped me find a job, put food on my table until i could get steady money coming in. they helped me when need it the most. the people seemed to really care about me and just listened. this place saved my life
I have been a volunteer for about 5 years. I do data entry of volunteer time. I have assumed the responsibility that it is "my job" to enter the volunteer time each month for monthly reporting. This has added to my satisfaction of volunteering. It has also given me the opportunity to use some of my technical skills which help to complete the monthly task.
I've been a volunteer at Irving Cares for almost 5 years. I find it a very rewarding experience and enjoy working with the clients, the other volunteers and the staff. The time goes by very quickly as we work
together to do as much as possible for our many and varied clients. I hope to be able to continue this
work well into the future.
Irving Cares provides temporary assistance that touches the lives of 20% of Irving residents. Teddie Story leads the staff and dedicated volunteers in providing financial assistance, food, employment services and referrals in a caring and professional way to people struggling with unexpected circumstances. It's a privilege for me to participate in helping people get their lives back on track.
I'm a voluteer in the Intake Department. I meet the people who are having to deal with the "speed bumps in the road of life". Irving Cares helps with their immediate needs by providing food, information, guidance and understanding without being judgemental.
It is a priviledge to play a small part to help build people up and help them recognize their own strenght.
I have been a volunteer at Irving Cares for three years and have enjoyed every day spent there. I especially enjoy meeting the clients and being able to say "Yes! We can help you with that."
The atmosphere is warm and friendly, with a professional staff who really cares about the clients' needs.
