I placed my beloved cockatoo and blue and gold macaw with Iowa Parrot Rescue eight months ago, boarding them temporarily. I drove five hours to get there because having visited I was very impressed with the operation. My health took a dive some months ago and my babies are still there, happy and well-adjusted and well-loved. I still don't know if I will be able to bring them home, but if not, I know we were blessed with the best rescue ever. I can't say enough good things about the care they receive.
I am a regular volunteer at Iowa Parrot Rescue and adopted three of my parrots from there. All of the volunteers care deeply about the parrots in the shelter and work hard to keep the environment clean and enriching for the avian residents. We feed fresh fruit and veggies every day, along with nuts, Harrison’s pellets and a sprinkling of seed. Iowa Parrot Rescue is funded entirely by private donations.
This rescue started in 1999 and one of the most successful in the US and is inspected yearly by the state. I wandered into that rescue looking for a cockatoo a couple years ago and assumed all rescues were like this one.....and I was really wrong. This rescue is self sufficient and loves volunteers and all adopters sign a contract that if their life changes and they cannot keep the adopted bird, then it will go back to Iowa Parrot Rescue. I adopted my Kenny the Cockatoo from this rescue and have no regrets.
