Mission: TIES promotes responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people by:- Creating an international network of individuals, institutions and the tourism industry - Educating tourists and tourism professionals - Influencing the tourism industry, public institutions and donors to integrate the principles of ecotourism into their operations and policies
Programs: Education and Training: Both online/distance learning courses (run with George Washington University), including a Certificate in Sustainable Tourism, as well as classroom courses and workshops (tailored to fit the venue). TIES has long been a leader in the field of education on a variety of ecotourism topics. Research and Publication: TIES is the leading global source for information about ecotourism and sustainable travel. Recent research has included various aspects of certification and eco-labeling, ecolodges, community based ecotourism, ecotourism and Indigenous peoples, consumer demand for responsible travel, and carbon management and mitigation. We have carried out research in Montenegro, Mexico, Lebanon, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Vietnam, Australia, among other countries. We also have an online library of published and peer reviewed articles which is open to the public.Membership: TIES has individual and organizational members in over 90 countries, representing various stakeholder groups in both the private and public sectors. We also partner with 40+ national and regional ecotourism associations.
