The international documentary association (ida) is dedicated to building and serving the needs of a thriving documentary culture. Through its programs, ida provides resources, creates community, and defends rights and freedoms for documentary artists, activists, and journalists.
Programs: Fiscal sponsorship: ida provides fiscal sponsorship for approved documentary films and related projects and accepts grants and donations to support worthwhile projects that might otherwise have difficulty in finding funding. In fye 6/30/2017 ida received 2,176 individual, corporate, government and foundation donations in support of 226 sponsored projects. Additionally, ida made grants to filmmakers for this service.
docuday is ida's annual screening of the year's oscar nominated feature and short documentaries. More than 600 attendees had the opportunity to watch the films and meet the filmmakers and film subjects. Ida's screening series presents 25-35 of the year's best documentary films to nearly 8,000 people including members of documentary and film industry guilds and organizations. Ida documentary awards is the world's preeminent annual event honoring excellence in documentary by recognizing the most outstanding documentary films and filmmakers. The 2016 awards honored o. J. : made in america (feature), the white helmets (short), starless dreams (pare lorentz), dr2 dokumania (curated series), making a murderer (limited series), last chance u (episodic series award), field of vision (short form series), 4. 1 miles (david l. Wolper student documentary), amongst other awards. Individual honorees included stanley nelson (career achievement), ally derks (pioneer award), lyn and norman lear (amicus), and nanfu wang (emerging filmmaker).
filmmaker services ida provides the essential information, services, tools, and grants required by documentary filmmakers to successfully engage in their art. Filmmaker services include:ida membership-as of 6/30/2017, more than 1,800 members in the united states and 37 countries around the world received valuable benefits and opportunities including discounts to ida events and a subscription to documentary magazine. "documentary" magazine/ documentary. Org -this quarterly print and year-round online publication offers essential information keeping readers on track with the industry. Print issues are sent to all ida members and more than 250 other individuals and organizations in the united states and 18 countries around the world. Another approximately 1,600 copies are distributed via newsstands, bookstores and other venues in the united states and canada. Ida's website is a vital portal into the industry that provides up-to-date information and opportunities to connect with the documentary film world. During fiscal year 2016-17, the site was viewed by 544,634 unique visitors and there were 1,230,576 page views. Pare lorentz documentary fund provides production support for the creation of original independent documentary films that illuminate pressing issues in the united states. In fiscal year 2015-2016, ida received a grant of $250,000 from the new york community trust, which was spent over multiple years. Ida awarded grants during 2016-2017 ranging from $15,000 to $25,000 to five (5) film projects totaling $165,000. Enterprise journalism fund provides research and development grants and production grants to documentary films that examine contemporary issue and use journalistic practice in the production of the films. The fund awards $1 million in annual grants ranging from $15,000 to $100,000 as well as providing support and mentorship for filmmakers.
doc u is the ida's series of educational seminars, workshops and master classes for aspiring and experienced documentary filmmakers. Taught by industry experts, participants receive vital training and insight on various topics including: distribution, writing, fair use and foundation support. Ida produced 22 doc u events master classes and seminars with sheila nevins, robby kenner, sonya childress, james lebrecht and others. Advocacy:ida works on a range of advocacy issues, including issuing public calls in support of filmmakers whose free speech rights ere being curtailed. Ida also participated in amicus briefs on a range of issues in partnership with the reporters committee for freedom of the press, and provided comments to the library of congress on copyright issues.
