I worked in international development for 30 years (at the World Bank) in health, education, and women's issues. The work of the ICSEE with Masaai women and their communities in Tanzania is the best I have ever seen. All of the staff are local, and Bob - who started this NGO, and devotes his life and own assets to it, has helped local staff to learn, grow and flourish. They work with women and their villages to find effective, robust, low-cost ways to improve lives. They started with smoke-free, fuel efficient stoves to clear choking smoke from homes. That was paired with solar light and power (even the Masaai have cell phones!). Then water purification systems, managed by the village, that cost just cents per gallon. Businesses for the poorest women to run and earn enough to buy their stove and lights. Cattle feed and hardier, more drought resistant cows, to adapt to the ravages of climate change. Not only is the impact amazing, but the way that Bob and Kisioki work is beautiful. The women are respected, full partners in everything. They have gained admiration from their communities, pride and self-respect, and courage they didn't know was possible. There are very low overheads, so all your donation goes right into impact. Bob has used his own pension fund, and sold his house, and invested in all in his wonderful work.
