Mission: ICFJ works with thousands of journalists each year to raise the standards of the profession and lay the foundation for independent media. We offer hands-on training, workshops, seminars, fellowships and international exchanges to reporters, editors and media managers around the globe. We seek results that resonate long after our training has ended. We rigorously evaluate our programs to measure their impact.We are advancing new ways to deliver, share and create news through digital technology, from using cell phones for health alerts in Africa to establishing rich databases for investigative journalism in Southeastern Europe.
Our IJNet.org Web site, now published in six languages, is the go-to resource for international journalists to network and learn about training opportunities. We conduct distance-learning courses for journalists we cannot reach in person.
ICFJ believes that better journalism can improve people''s lives. We are training health journalists to provide accurate and balanced information that will help the public and policymakers stop the spread of killer diseases. We are giving journalists the scientific know-how and resources to cover environmental issues so that they can help their countries balance sustainable economic growth with protection of natural resources. And we are providing in-depth training to business reporters, who can make markets more transparent - and make public officials and corporate executives more accountable.
Programs: This program makes tangible changes that improve the quality and free flow of news in the public interest around the world. Funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the year-long program sends international media professionals to countries where there are opportunities to promote reliable, insightful journalism that holds officials accountable. Launched in 1994, the program now receives support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Media Development Loan Fund. Knight International Fellows are establishing new journalism associations, launching journalism schools, creating web-based databases to track corruption, establishing news delivery services via cell phone and creating digital platforms to share content.
