Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals, Protection of Endangered Species, Wildlife Sanctuaries

Mission: The core mission of the International Anti-Poaching Foundation (IAPF) is wildlife conservation through direct action. Across much of Africa anti-poaching tactics have remained largely unchanged for decades. Small groups of undertrained and poorly equipped rangers are sent out for days on end to conduct patrols in remote and dangerous locations. Modern-day poachers have evolved and routinely utilize military tactics and equipment to kill high-target species, such as elephants, rhinos and gorillas. In the cross-fire, rangers are also killed. Seeing this shortfall, the IAPF set out in 2009 to fill the gap. The IAPF has a structured approach to conservation, employing the relevant tactics and technology to defend wildlife from the ever increasing threat of poaching within protected areas. Anti-poaching however is only a portion of the conservation solution. To be a part of successful projects, the IAPF works alongside partners who specialize in community engagement and development, research and development, wildlife rescue and biodiversity management. Anti-poaching protects community assets, creates jobs, promotes training and education and reduces habitat destruction. In the many water stressed countries of southern Africa, future generations will depend on these critical natural environments for their very wellbeing.

Results: Since inception in 2009, the IAPF has worked to close the gap between highly sophisticated criminal poaching networks and undertrained and poorly equipped rangers. This work has generated impactful and impressive results in Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa through programs such as Eco Ranger, Anti-Poaching Intelligence Group, Anti-Poaching Training and Patrols, Game Reserves United, Victoria Fall Anti-Poaching Unit, and IAPF Air Support. In 2016, due to a determined IAPF presence between poaching forces in Mozambique and the South African border validated poaching losses in adjacent areas of Kruger National park were reduced by 80% versus 2015. In 2017, IAPF initiated the Ashikanga ("The Brave Ones") Female Anti-Poaching Unit project. Akashinga is a community-driven conservation model, empowering disadvantaged women to restore and manage a network of wilderness areas an alternative to trophy-hunting.

Target demographics: High Target Species such as elephant and rhino that are being hunted to extinction by poachers and ruthless criminal networks with global reach.

Direct beneficiaries per year: Endangered wildlife and habitats in Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and South Africa. We also created educational resources focused on the importance of habitat preservation and conservation for teachers and students regarding

Geographic areas served: Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, South Africa, Kenya

Programs: A structured approach to conservation, employing the relevant tactics and technology to defend wildlife from the ever increasing threat of poaching within protected areas. Anti-poaching however is only a portion of the conservation solution. To be a part of successful projects, the IAPF works alongside partners who specialize in community engagement and development, research and development, wildlife rescue and biodiversity management. This includes immediate and long-term education solutions for game rangers in harms way to effectively protect high target species and their surrounding ecosystems.

I have so much respect for IAPF, its Akashinga ranger programme in southern Africa empowers courageous women to achieve amazing outcomes, greatly reducing wildlife poaching. This, together with the LEAD Ranger International Conservation Leadership programme are two pillars of our last line of defense before Nature tells us that it is too late. I am extremely grateful to IAPF for saving critical wildlife and supporting local communities in doing so. I will continue donating to IAPF on a regular basis. Thank you and much on-going success to IAPF ! Jack Desbiolles (Australia)

We saw the video showing the history and training of Akashinga by Damien Mander and were very moved by it. Following a donation we had a phone call from an IAPF representative in the US where we learned so much about the organization, its mission and its founder. We later had the privilege of meeting Damien when he was in Washington DC. It reaffirmed our understanding of how deeply committed Damien is to wildlife conservation and to IAPF. He is the real deal.

This group’s unique approach to protecting elephants empowers local communities, particularly the women. It should be no surprise that females can be powerful warriors against poaching, and this recognition is enabling effective preservation of these herds, while supporting local economies and increasing the understanding of conservation.

My wife and myself not only regularly donate money to this great non-profit organization.
We also had the pleasure to work with the passionate team in Zimbabwe in order to protect wildlife there.
IAPF is an absolute trustworthy and reliable organization that fights for the rights and protection of all animals in Africa!

I think it's one of the most wholesome and dedicated organizations aimed at protecting animals. The way they go about it is fascinating and Netflix-adaptation worthy. I'm absolutely in awe of the women rangers and Damien Mander whose life story is incredibly interesting (highly recommend his Ted Talk). The fact that they are also vegan is what truly makes them special. Such kind of integrity and dedication is inspiring on multiple levels.

An inspiring organization that is making a real difference. From the amazing women who transform into elite guardians of some of the worlds most precious wildlife, to the man who's vision brought it all together. A rare feel good story in our planet under siege.

I've had a lifelong sensitivity to the plight of the animals we share this planet with. My grandfather was a hunter and trapper and I spent a great deal of time with him as a youngster. Time in the bush with him in part meant witnessing first hand what animals go through because of our actions. This valuable lesson has always stayed with me and engendered a sincere desire to at some point give back to those entirely innocent and vulnerable species which try to survive in our midst.
A few years ago this motivation inspired me to search for organizations that were walking the walk and not just talking the talk. This search led me to discover the IAPF. The story of it's founding and the approach they are taking to conservation and the running of the organization seemed to me to be overwhelmingly unique. Integrity and clarity of purpose are very clearly hallmarks of this organization. They spend the money they bring in on the front lines of the struggle in which they are engaged. They protect those animals most in need while at the same time strengthening local communities through their hiring of front line female rangers. It's a brilliant approach and deserves our support.
In a world rife with so much corruption and malfeasance it's extremely heartening to find an organization whose sole mission is to do the right thing for the most vulnerable creatures on the planet .
There is an old Vedic saying that goes something like: "When something is the truth the whole universe stands up and declares it to be the truth" such is my perception of the integrity and authenticity of the men and woman at the IAPF.
I hope these words encourage those that can to contribute to the IAPF's cause of holding the line in the battle against extinction for some of the worlds most beautiful and intelligent creatures.

Inspiring and relevant non-profit that has so much to tell the world about its work empowering women in Africa, protecting wildlife, engaging communities to support wildlife that can provide valuable employment, as well as being a plant-based community. They are stellar examples of how we can all make better choices to benefit both himans and animals for a better world.

Animals have little room to thrive. What room they have, leaves them dealing with trophy hunters or poachers. IAPF not only takes this horrific problem on-They train women in the community to be fighters and protectors of the animals. They train dogs to sniff out poachers. Damien and his team constantly work to discover new ways to educate the public, their staff and people who once were poachers themselves, as they saw it as their only means of support IAPF works to show there is more value having these animals alive then not. Not only financially but also understanding our world would be a much less vibrant planet without them. There are many endless struggles to protect our lovely flora and fauna. IAPF is tantamount in helping to protect our big animals. It is an endless, often difficult, dangerous and thankless task to protect these beautiful animals that are endangered. This is a necessary organization.
I donate what I can as a retired women. Please help IAPF thrive so they can help animals thrive.

Damien Mander is perhaps the most dedicated, sincere and passionate person I've ever met (I've met a good number!). Learn about the Akashinga program that he created for the International Anti-Poaching Foundation... it will take your breath away. The issue of saving wildlife and the habitat it depends on is foundational to the existential threats humanity faces, from climate change to pandemics. It's all tied together. Support this bold and unique group of heroes.

Ongoing updates are respectful and do not spam, with content which is both sufficiently detailed and relevant.

I have been a supporter of the IAPF since I saw a bit on '20/20' and a number of articles online as long ago as 2006. I was impressed with Damien's vision and drive to see success in the Rhino and Elephant Wars. I believe that the sort of creativity the IAPF espouses in the approach to conservation is a model which should be followed by other nonprofits engaged in the preservation of nature. Engagement with the wider conservation community in the pursuit of creative and novel approaches to conservation remains at the fore of the IAPF's approach to conservation in pursuit of a wider and concerted anti-poaching effort across Africa. When selecting worthy causes and the organizations which serve them, the IAPF should be at the very top of every donor's mind. We are responsible for the conditions under which our world's flora and fauna presently subsist, and so we should find ourselves compelled by the moral imperative to preserve what remains in our wake - and the International Anti-Poaching Federation (IAPF) does precisely that.

Damien Mander, the founder of IAPF, is an inspirational person who has grown the IAPF into an organisation that gets 'down and dirty' in its fight against poaching. Even more inspiring is the voice he is giving, not only to the beleaguered animals of Africa, but also to the local women in training them to be elite rangers. He is paving the way to a (hopefully) more compassionate and thoughtful world. This is an individual whose growing organisation needs all the support they can get in trying to preserve native animals from the ignorance, greed and/or stupidity of those 'human animals' that would have your believe that Rhino horn or Elephant tusks have some 'magical' power and need to be 'harvested' to satisfy the demand of (typically) Asian markets. Human cruelty to animals is well documented and widely ignored by most with the convenience of being several steps away from the slaughter. The IAPF are right in there, with the rangers risking their own lives to save those of the voiceless. THEY NEED TO BE SUPPORTED!

The information they share via social media is frequent, informative and uplifting. I am proud to support IAPF and the way they live their values.

I've had my eye on this nonprofit for several years, and they are doing fantastic work -- on two fronts. First and foremost, they are taking direct action to save the LAST magnificent, iconic mammals of Africa in the only way possible: beating poachers at their own game. Secondly, they are empowering women and helping to break the repressive chains of misogynist, repressive cultures in African nations so that the next generation of girls can see the potential of powerful, capable women ready to challenge wrong-doing by either gender.

I am always saddened by the death of an animal and how barbaric we are to kill a glorious, intelligent creature like the elephant - merely for its tusks and other body parts!! That's why I was thrilled to see an organization like IAPF come into being. This organization also had the foresight to realize that women are more than capable. IAPF gave hope back to the animals and also to women needing to fend for themselves and their families. Kudos to you IAPF!

I heard about the International Anti-Poaching Foundation and specifically the Akashinga female rangers on an NPR radio program. These women are courageous warriors who are fighting a battle everyday, risking their lives. They deserve our help.

IAPF has been quite innovative in their approach to poaching. Back when it started I doubted whether it had a chance but I was proven wrong.
The Foundation has made leap and strides in combating poaching and at the same time has taken an initiative to help empower and employ women to fulfill the role of guardians of the animals that need help or watching over whilst fighting criminal elements.

They also have a very successful track record and as a Foundation, they are completely transparent with where the donations get used and how.

Personally I like to hear the success stories of the people, men and women involved in the fight against poaching. I am a donor and I am proud to be one

I first learned about IAPF from the interview with Damien Mander in the film "The Game Changers." His words moved me. In fact, that interview was the segment in the film that inspired me most and truly touched my soul. I immediately became a top fan of IAPF and their ground-breaking model to protect the planet's precious and vulnerable species in Africa. Since that time, I have donated whenever I have had the means to do so. I have interacted with their team via email and felt welcomed and very appreciated as a supporter. They have a fantastic team and are doing crucial work! I wish everyone on the planet who had a few extra dollars would donate to this fine organization which is preserving and protecting species we all love so dearly. At the same time, IAPF is providing training and employment to deserving and amazing women in Africa. IAPF gives these women the opportunity to demonstrate to the world just how strong, compassionate and courageous they are. We all owe them a debt of gratitude.

I first heard about this group watching "The Game Changers." I love them. I ESPECIALLY love Akashinga, for two main reasons. First, they protect endangered (all, really) animals in a legal fashion. Second, they promote the welfare of local women, which, as all experts on the environment, global warming, and humanitarianism in general have noted, is one of the single most important developments that the world can make to improve the quality of life on earth, and not just for humans. So, it is a win-win scenario. I seldom use buzz-words, but THIS is synergy! Support these people!

I have donated money to the brave "Akashinga" girls (operated by the IAPF) four times already.
These girls protect the wild animals in Africa from poachers. And they do it with a freakin gun in their hands. These tough girls risk their lifes every day in the bush. Because they get paid by the IAPF, their otherwise low social status within their local communities increases which means that they get bullied less in their patriarchal environment. So I am not only supporting the last wild animals in Africa, I am also supporting the people there.
Other people just send money to Africa to feed the ever growing population there.
This is so much better. Go Akashinga!

Sincere thanks to all the staff of IAPF. They do GIVE so much to protect, save, help, feed, take care, rise, our wonderful brothers, the WILD ANIMALS. The founder of IAPF could not accept that every eight hours a rhino is killed. And he his giving is life to protect these wonderful and pacific animals. Working in my office, in Switzerland, what else than helping IAPF with money, can I do from my country. THEY do the job and I have a great admiration for all of them.
Thank you again.

I already had a soft spot for IAPF after seeing the short film by Director Jane’s Cameron featuring their work. Then I donated. Typically one expects to donate and then never hear anything else. instead this organization sent a newsletter a few months later showing exactly what they were able to accomplish stop to illegal poaching.

IAPF is necessary.

Amazing cause. Helping bring back animals on the verge of extinction to more healthy population numbers. Poaching has dramatically decimated elephant, lion, rhino, and many other populations. We need to stop this mentality of letting people kill them to make money for the tribes. This is not the way it should be. Also love that they are all women so the corruption aspect is much lower than if they were men.

Ten years ago I stumbled across Damien’s interview on 60 minutes and how one day he decided to dedicate his life to protecting wildlife. At the time I did not have any understanding of the illegal wildlife trade and how poaching was rampant in parts of Africa with little protection for the animals. Damien and IAPF gave me hope that someone was out there fighting for the wildlife. I’ve enjoyed watching IAPF grow over the years. I've been following the IAPF for years after watching the founder, Damien Mander, share his story in a TED talk. The work this organization is doing to save our planet's wildlife from extinction is admirable, inspiring and actually gives this animal-lover hope. Not only are they making a significant impact on the rhino and elephant populations in Africa, they are providing meaningful employment to the incredible women, the Akashinga, they recruit to do the work in the field.

I hosted a fundraiser for the IAPF in 2018 and had the opportunity to meet and host Damien during his time in California to raise awareness and funds. He is the real deal. His schedule was insane and he showed up in full force to educate and inspire. He has dedicated his life to protecting our planet's majestic beasts from meaningless, violent, greed-motivated deaths.
