Mission: Interfaith Housing Corporation originated from an interfaith conference held in the fall of 1989 that addressed the question of what Richmond's religious community could do to address the housing needs of low-income Richmonders. Operating initially as a volunteer organization using the resources of member congregations, IHC directed first efforts at rehabilitating nine owner-occupied residences in the Richmond metropolitan area. The work has since considerably broadened to include new construction and rehabilitation of housing and the development of commercial projects. Today, IHC is a non-profit, non-sectarian community development corporation that, per year, provides at least 60 new housing units for home ownership to low and moderate-income families in the City of Richmond and Henrico and Chesterfield Counties. The mission of IHC is to create healthy neighborhoods through housing and other neighborhood development initiatives by harvesting the resources of communities of faith, businesses, individuals and the public sector.
