The Indo-American Center is a great place to volunteer! The adult ESL students are eager to learn English, and the staff gives great support so that I can volunteer without difficulty. It's great to feel that I can have an impact in the lives of immigrants to help them assimilate into the United States.

I worked at the Indo-American Center as an ESL teacher and tutor for about a month in October of 2010. I enjoyed it a lot and think that the center does a good job of providing essential services such as literacy and citizenship courses to recent arrivals to the States, and those seeking to improve their place here.
The Center provides literacy courses from pre-beginners (quite a challenge, if you don't speak your students' native language!) to those preparing to pass English literacy exams.
One of the things I appreciated about the Center was that, although it primarily caters to South Asian immigrants, it is open to all comers and serves as an important nexus for the variety of ethnic groups resident in West Rogers Park.
