Nonprofit Overview

Mission: In-Sight was founded on the belief that teenagers are constantly seeking individual identities as well as a place in society, often without the proper tools or forum for demonstrating their ideas and aspirations. Our program, which began in 1992 with the goal of offering a one-month class, now offers year round photography courses at the introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels for students ages 11 to 18. All participants are given access to cameras, materials, and a fully equipped darkroom in addition to guidance provided by experienced photographers. Our mission has remained constant: we continue to offer photography classes to any interested youth regardless of their ability to pay. In addition, we seek out students in need of alternative learning situations by working with other non-profit youth organizations, schools and counselors. Using cameras as tools and photography as the venue, young people involved with In-Sight have an opportunity to experience success, increase their self-esteem, and gain insight into their lives. Through acquiring the technical skills of exposing film and printing photographs, participating youth learn a new and powerful language of communication, and consequently develop an improved relationship to learning
