Mission: The mission of the illinois railway museum is to demonstrate the vital role railroads have played in the growth of the chicago area as well as the united states through the preservation and operation of railroad and mass transit rolling stock and the display of related artifacts in a realistic setting. These exhibits provide an interactive, educational experience for visitors of all ages.
Programs: Museum and education of rail operations and different departments including the electric car department, diesel department, steam passenger coach department, steam department and trolley bus department. Includes maintenance and restoration of site and collection.

I think it's a great little museum (it's actually physically huge, as much it outdoors). In contrast with many modern large museums, there is not so much professionalism and slickness, but rather lot's of love. This flows from the enormous amount of volunteer labor of all sorts involved in operating and restoring old trains.
