When I was 17 years old, I went on an HXP trip as a “builder” to Cusco, Peru and had the best life-changing experience that I ever imagined! The trip was 2.5 weeks long and focussed on serving the local community by building an elementary school. I went with 19 other youth and 2 trip leaders, along with 2 parent leaders. The experience was so great because I was immersed in the culture, while my parents had the assurance that I was completely safe in the hands of my leaders. The leaders truly cared about me and my physical as well as spiritual well being. We visited multiple sites as tourists such as Machu Picchu, Lima, and played soccer together too often! The building of the elementary school was a work in progress throughout the summer with other HXP trips coming after us and it was cool to be apart of something bigger than myself! I came to know that there is a whole world outside of my little bubble. I gained a new perspective of life thanks to the company’s great efforts in making me feel so special and important and loved. They taught me the best life lessons ever and I am forever grateful. This summer, I look forward to going back to Peru but this time as a leader!
