I have been a board member for the Humane Society of Greater Akron (HSGA) for six years, and sometimes I think people don't fully understand what makes this organization unique. Like other rescue agencies, we house animals without homes and find them new families. But what separates HSGA is that we are the one animal welfare agency with law enforcement officers - Humane Officers - who enforce animal cruelty laws. The animals we take in range from snakes to dogs and cats to horses. They often are abused, sick, injured or victims of hoarding cases. We provide veterinary care, nurse them back to health and work very hard to find them homes. On most days, we are caring for several hundred animals waiting of new homes. With this vital mission, you may think that we are a government funded agency. We are not. We rely almost entirely on private donations. We rely on volunteers. And we rely on a dedicated staff that is worth twice what we can pay them. Please consider our vital mission when you think of charities that are worthy of your support. And please consider the kindness of adopting a rescue from us or any of our local animal adoption organizations.
