We have adopted 3 dogs throughout the years from HSMC and they have all been complete joys. They have even helped with personal complications through the adoption process which helped us immensely prepare the best home possible for our pets. Thank you for the wonderful help!

My family and I adopted Wiggles, who then became Sapphire, a blue nose pitty. We chose this facility, because it’s clean, and they really take care and show pride in all of their animals. She originally was being held for another potential family who had her on hold, but they never came back for her. Then, we received the call that she was going to be part of our family. The staff went out of their way to bring us together the day before Thanksgiving 2019, in which they were to be closed. We can’t thank them enough.

In the 25 years we have lived in Ocala, Fl. We have gone to the Marion County Humane Society four times. We have adopted two dogs. Four cats and we are going up next week to adopt two kittens. Our dogs lived long and happy lives with us reaching the age of 18 years. The cats we had also lived long happy lives. Our animals were well treated loving animals. One can tell how an animal has been taken care because they are happy, in good health and very loving. Every baby we adopted was in good health when we took them home.

My husband and I went to adopt a dog, not too hyper, medium. We saw a picture of a dog we thought would be good for us. We had to go to PetSmart as he had been taken there for adoption along with several other dogs. When we arrived every dog was barking except for (Abraham) now named Murph O’Shea. He is absolutely the nicest dog, he loves our cat all other dogs and people he meets. The lady in charge of adoptions said that they that he was just the best dog that they had right then. She said we would not be sorry and she was definitely right. We just love him so much. We adopted him November 2022. He was one year old. Were impressed with the Humane Society of Marion County. He was 36 lbs then, he is now 54 lbs. He is a foodie so we have to watch his weight now. We take him for long walks, runs, play with other dogs and ball playing. This picture was taken on his 3rd birthday October 22, 2024.

I took in a young feral cat to the shelter to be fixed. The staff was very professional and the wait time was minimal along with the price. Ki Ki turned out to be soooooo loving and is no longer wild. His initial visit to my home and barn, he brought me a dead rat and coral snake. From that point on he would sit in my lap on the porch. Now he sleeps on my bed. Thank you!!!!

After losing my two Yorkies last year I didn't think I would ever get another dog. Let alone a different breed. I had the Yorkies for 15 years. Well that has all changed. All though no other pet could replace the love and the bond I had with them. I decided I wanted and needed a new pet companion. I met a couple dogs and then I met Maisie. OMG I brought my daughter and grandbabies with me. And immediately Maise went straight to them and gave them lots of kisses. That's when I knew she was ment for me. I adopted her 4/25/24 and what a blessing she is. So loving, fun and very loyal and obedient. Thank you Fantashia W. For making the process so easy and introducing us to Maisie.

Wonderful staff. They had me and my Angel scheduled that same day. The clinic was clean. Our Dr. Zimmerman- She is absolutely amazing.
I truly felt like my Angel mattered to her.
Compared to some other Vets that I have seen. Zimmerman is compassionate and leads a great team.
The Clinic helped me to be able to afford the care that my Angel needed.
I’m very thankful for each and every one of them.

If you are willing to foster I have never been refused help. They go above and beyond other organizations in the amount of animals they help.

I adopted this adorable cat back in September of 2022. Her name was Clarise, now Luna. I told the front desk that I wanted someone loving because my other cat was not that affectionate. They pointed at Clarise, her cage was right next to them. Let me tell you, she is an angel! OMG, what a special and beautiful soul she is! I don’t see how she was there for six months waiting to be adopted! I guess Jehovah was saving her for me. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart!

I began as a volunteer and then a foster parent. The dog that I fostered in January of this year was in a hospice position. He had suffered several mini strokes. He was well taken care of, but the HSMC felt his situation would improve with a home of his own. He is now in perfect health and I have adopted him. The transition into our home was amazing! He learned to use the doggy door and loves car rides and long hikes. He travels with us and has stayed in several rentals in other states, always being a gentleman. I love volunteering with this amazing organization. I can't put into words how impressed I am with them!

The first thing I noticed about Damascus’ profile picture was his adorable ears. I was drawn to him immediately. I set up a meet and greet and was informed that he does have a history of aggression towards men. So I asked to set up another with my boyfriend to see how he would react - and even though Damascus is supposed to be my dog he fell in love with my boyfriend too. He is such a spoiled sweet boy and the Humane Society was nothing but helpful with the adoption process and taking him home! They gave us two bags of foods since he’s on a special diet due to allergies! I am so happy that I got my fur-ever friend from them

We saw a dog online the shelter had named Adena. The shelter said she was good with dogs and cats, but didn’t know about her temperament with children. We didn’t have any animals in the house, but we do have a two year old. Adena is a 70 lb lab/pit mix. So, we all went to the shelter to go meet her. We all instantly fell in love with her, and decided to bring her home. To say she is the best dog is an understatement...she gets hand fed kibble and lays with my two year old. Allows her to kiss her right in the face. She has the best temperament, and is the sweetest dog I have ever seen. She fit right into our family dynamic immediately like the missing piece to a puzzle. We love her so much. Everyone at the shelter was friendly and helpful to us. We just want to say thank you for Adena who is now named Marley. She couldn’t be more perfect!

Came in on 04/09/2021 to look at a black lab mix for adoption. Completed the paperwork and interview, and was asked to come back the following day with photos of the house and for the staff to meet my daughter. We came back on 04/10/2021, showed the pictures and the dog met my daughter, and the visit went well. We were assisted by Destiny, who did an absolutely fantastic job of assisting us and other customers, both in the office and on the phone. The shelter was very busy and Destiny handled the customers with efficiency and professionalism. She made sure we had everything we needed for our new pet, and she explained all of the paperwork we received and ensured we understood everything as we went through the adoption process. This was our first time adopting from the shelter, and we had heard some very good things before we went, and we were very pleased that all the good things we heard were true. Thank you to the Humane Society for helping us get our new wonderful pet, and to Destiny for her help that day!!

Tally was taken into custody by Florida Animal Control in September, 2020. Tally should have weighed at 2 years of age 50-90 lbs for a brindle Plott hound mix but she weighed in at 22 lbs. Additionally, to being totally emaciated, full of intestinal worms and parasites, she also had heart worm. The Humane Society’s veterinarian team worked on bringing her weight up, ridding her of the intestinal worms and parasites, and praying she would make it through the heart worm treatment. She was one of the dogs that had a 50/50 chance to make it and the staff and volunteers did everything they could to get her through it. She was finally strong enough to have the heart worm treatment 3 months later in December. She was fostered by the Cornish family and under bedrest for 3 weeks during the treatment time. Tally, soon renamed as Brynn (because she is a beautiful brindle color), was ready for adoption at the end of December. Brynn had a very hard start in life but was able to make it to be rescued, brought back to health and adopted. Which is no easy task for the all the people that fought so hard against those that cruelly treated her. With the help of animal control, medical staff, employees that knew they could make a difference, and all those volunteers they made sure she could make it to a ‘forever home’. Brynn now resides with the retired Cornish’s and she has unlimited cuddles, travels with the family, goes on long trail walks, visits tons of dog parks, enjoys boat rides and has an older brother Carl (also a rescue) to play with. They are now inseparable in their forever home.

i adopted a beautiful kitten on DEC 1ST, 2020. #4545 Cinnamon Toast, renamed Sadie, by my granddaughter. She was my comfort kiddie, after my surgery. She thought I was her mommy. She started to get sick saturday, stomach expanding, not playful, just sat and looked spaced. We took her to her Vet Tues., yesterday, and found out she had FIP. She had to be put to sleep. She was so loved. Miss her dearly. Don't know if she was carrying the disease when we adopted her, but, it is transmitted by other kittens. I suggest you get your kittens tested. People trust your society, and it would be heart breaking to others, to find out you adopted a sick animal.

Came in the shelter today to look for a dog for my children. I looked at one dog but noticed she was too playful for my small children. We asked to meet Damascus. He was very friendly and loved playing with his frog toy which he took everywhere with him. We fell in love with him and returned home to bring our small children up to meet him. He did so great with my twins that are two. I then had a home visit that went very well and my other children fell in love with him too. I just wanted to write a good review about every member staff. Each one was kind, patient and really cared about helping us and answering every question we had. I want to thank them and let them know he already made himself at home and we be loved so much. What a wonderful place to find your next family member! They had so many sweet and beautiful dogs and cats up for adoption! Everyone working and volunteering there seemed to love all of their residents so much. The dogs seemed happy, even though they are in a shelter awaiting their forever home and they are obviously well cared for! We observed many dogs enjoying playtime in the nice outdoor fenced areas and the conditions of their kennels were well kept. Very impressive facility and staff! Megan went above and beyone with us, but all staff were great! I am proud to say I am a volunteer at the Humane Society of Marion County. When you enter the facility you can see the animals are well cared for by compassionate staff. At risk dogs are often in the front office receiving extra attention, greeting visitors or sleeping in their beds. Staff in the kennels are focused on coordinating the numerous tasks that keep the dogs exercised, fed and with a safe place to sleep. But look closer and you will see small acts of kindness- a hug as they place a dog back in it's kennel, a staff member sitting on the floor of the kennel with a new , frightened dog, an extra blanket on the bed , and treats being distributed. Staff treat volunteers as members of the team and are receptive to input/ concerns we have about a particular dog. Volunteering at HSMC is an experience that is good for the soul

HSMC makes volunteering an amazing experience that fits everyone's lifestyle. The staff demonstrate compassion for the dogs & cats waiting for a forever home. Despite what must be a busy workload, the animals receive extra hugs and attention whenever possible from the staff. Volunteering is so easy. There are no restrictions on days of the week or hours of the day to volunteer- you just show up. As a volunteer you can choose how you would like to spend your time- from walking & training dogs to providing a bath to helping to keep the facility clean & neat for our animals & guests. There's a "job" for everyone. I always leave my day there feeling good for having made a difference with such a great team.

My friend had wanted a puppy so we went to petsmart ,found a lab/mix puppy and fell in love with that puppy at that very moment.. We did all the paper work and was told we had to wait for home check and a meet and greet. We didn't really want to wait for all that but we did and I went the next day for the meet and greet and we were waiting quite awhile for the meet and greet and as people came in and out my dog not the puppywas getting nervous and excited and started barking so I was making him not to bark and guess what we were told we abuse our dog and we cannot adopt the dog we wanted and we were fuming from that moment and they said I will look at the camera and show you how you abuse your dog.. my dog as I did not hit him just put a folder in front of his face but these people were like 5 people to make us feel like crap...we went through the meet and greet and was told to wait for a call which never came so went again and said we cannot have the dog i paid money and said I would receive it 3 weeks we'll been longer than that... This dog was probably being saved for themselves as it sure was not a mix they said, well I went to get a purebred from Gainesville the next week and was never asked any questions and I took the dog home that minute.. and she's thriving the best dog ever... Just will never go to humane society as they make you feel like crap..my animals are the best kept animals ever... I've rescued many cats and dogs and they always lived long lives.. But we feel bad for that dog we wanted to adopt we really loved her and hope she found a good home...

I have been blessed to work for HSMC for the last 10 years. I just retired and I want to say that this shelter is one of the finest I have had the pleasure to work for in 19 years as a Vet Tech. This little shelter goes above and beyond for animals in its' care. The staff and volunteers are the heart of the whole shelter, they are the eyes and ears for the very busy medical staff. This little shelter is a place of innovative programs, like the Bark bus and Meow too or the Dog-Gone Reading Program, and teaching Humane Education. It's a place of hope, healing, and a whole lot of love. Our dogs and cats will remain in our hearts for years after they are adopted. Sometimes, when they come back yo visit the lobby will fill employees wanting to see how they little fur-ball is doing. If you get a chance stop by an visit.

I was perfectly matched with wonderful dog from there 13 years ago. I went in looking for a dog around two years of age I did not want a puppy, and other than that no real criteria. I met with several dogs without really feeling that connection. After almost giving up a volunteer recommended that I meet one last dog. She was a little younger than I was looking for but they felt she would be a great match and they were right. For the last 13 years I've been so grateful for the patience and attentiveness of that volunteer.

I had been looking for months in various counties for a German Shepherd to become a companion / sibling for my Sheka (at the time, 3yr old German Shepherd). When I came across the Humane Society of Marion website and saw a picture of a female German Shepherd named Chloe. Our first meeting, I looked into those big brown eyes I knew she was mine. We were told she had been returned several times & suffered from separation anxiety. Regardless, I knew she would never feel lonely or unwanted in her new family. Khloe (as we spell her name now) has been a part of our family now for almost 3 years and this will always be her forever home. We love both of our fur-babies. Thank you Humane Society of Marion!

I volunteer at the shelter. I have never met a more caring and compassionate group of people. They absolutely have the best interests of these future pets in mind. I see firsthand the daunting coordination and organization it takes to schedule, staff, learn and meet the needs of these many animals - and all is done with great love and care. You can tell the animals adore them right back! The volunteer training was thorough and there’s support anytime. I also adopted my Louie from here and after a long time there, my vet says he’s in really great shape. Even though I was a volunteer, I still had to complete the comprehensive adoption process that makes sure each animal is going to a home where they will be well-cared for and safe...forever.

Me and another family member wanted to volunteer here so we attended the class ,bought the t-shirt (that is mandatory to buy ), bought the special dog leash (that is mandatory for each volunteer to purchase) , but when we showed up for our 1st day nobody wanted to show us what to do. We were made to feel like we were a nuisance rather then a welcomed extra set of hands. We never returned.

Hi there. I am sorry you had this experience that is definitely not how we wanted you to feel. The shirt is required to distinguish you from the public and the leash is only a recommendation because it will handle all of the dogs. There are other opportunities at the shelter other than walking dogs that don't require that leash. Please call Kirstin at 352-873-7387 ext 204. She is the volunteer coordinator and will be able to help you further with this. We would love to have you back and hope that you would give us another shot.

I have been volunteering with several animal relief organizations over the past 10 years. My appreciation and expectation of the HSMC has exceeded any other group I have been associated with. Every person- The Director, the Vet Techs and all the office and kennel staff show incredible compassion and dedication to the comfort and care of the animals.
I am proud to be associated with the HSMC and gain great satisfaction in the small part I contribute .

I am a snowbird--I volunteer for 6 months from October until April. I also volunteer at a no kill shelter in my home state where I foster bottle baby kittens.

At Marion County I help feed, clean areas where cats live and socialize cats one day a week . Every Saturday I assist staff at adoption event at Pet Smart. I walk dogs at event, talk to customers about the animals, educate them about the humane society and enjoy myself.

Staff at the shelter and the event are very knowledgeable about the animals. They all go above and beyond to assure animals are well cared for . It is a pleasure to assist the staff and animals.

I have been active in several animal shelters in the northeast For many years. I began volunteering at hsmc last year when I moved to Florida. Hsmc is a very special organization because the staff and volunteers take such great care of all of the animals. The marketing, social media, and educational programs are exceptional. Hsmc has the most dedicated volunteers I have ever seen.

I have lived in various citys across the US and volunteered at Human Societies. All are great services. But Marion County is one of the most dedicated facilities I have every seen. Rather it is caring for the animals to social media to getting visibility for adoption to special events, they are on it. But the best is the absolute love, care and hard work they give to each animal, especially the ones that come in sick or terribly abused. From the volunteers to top mangement these people are incredible in their every day dedication and care.

I began volunteering when we moved here 3 months ago. Bob was my training class instructor. He gave us great information about our roles as volunteers and showed us the proper way to interact with the dogs and walk them.
I love walking the dogs and bonding with them.
The greatest satisfaction is when I return I see that some of the dogs I walked have been adopted.
This is a fabulous organization that is doing a tremendous job of caring for the animals.

This dog adoption here in Ocala, Florida (Marion County
Florida Humane Society)has been the absolute one of the worst experiences that I have ever had to endure, all due to one Seemingly nice and sweet and very vindictive and very Prejudice senile old lady named Hannah. And when I say Prejudice, I don't necessarily mean just for their creed or for the color of a persons skin, I mean for also for the color and size of your wallet. If you don't have enough money to do what she says to do with the dog and how to take care it and train it, she will do everything in her power to deny you a dog that she herself decides that you can't afford to take care of not even knowing your families' financial situation. That's what happen to us. She's a volunteer at the center, (That has power and obviously alot of Influence, Probably because of the amount of her and her husband's donations over the years), whom does the home visits before a dog can be adopted. She even came to our home.
We had everything done and then she walks in and goes into a office with the Admin and then they say we can't have the full blood german Sheppard. She said that since we don't want to pay for expensive professional training classes, that we can't have the good dog that we had visited for the last 2-3 days and the whole family had met and somewhat bonded with. She judged us and Discriminated against us on Social Status. Please if you want to adopt an animal at this shelter, please be sure that an old vindictive, Prejudice and judgemental white haired old lady by the name of Hannah does not get on your case for you to be evaluated by her. If you do get her, you better tell her you've got alot of money in the bank and that you will spare no expenses in order to take care of the dog you Choose. BEWARE OF HANNAH!!!
Furthermore, On a more positive note... The staff, other the Hannah, was very helpful very polite very respectful They have an Very Outstanding staff!!! other than Hannah!!!
BEWARE OF HANNAH!!!

We stopped in to see if they had any small dogs. Then, we met Jinxie now named Genzi. She was a very timid little girl and unsteady on her feet. But we fell in love with her. Genzi is a beagle mix and so very sweet. She is slowly coming out of her shell. She loves to be out side. The staff at the Humane Society of Marion County were excellent. They all took a personal interest to talk about Genzi and when we made the decision to bring her home, we were able to fill out all of the paperwork and take her home the same day. Can't say enough good things about the staff. They were wonderful!!! Thank you!

My wife and I freely roamed the kennels and found Klondike with his brother Magnum. A staff member took him into a visiting room and within 5 minutes we fell in love. We returned to the lobby and filled out the necessary papers for his adoption. They provided us with all the information we wanted and were told a home inspection would be scheduled. The next day an inspector came and we answered all his questions and he sign off on the papers and said you can pick him up when we were ready. We were ready then and went and completed the paperwork, paid the adoption fees and took him home at which point we changed his name to Dexter. Took him to the dog park and fit right in at only 8 weeks old. We can see a long and happy relationship and thank all the staff at HSMC.

One of the best organizations I’ve ever volunteered for. Amazing staff who have a very difficult and tireless job keeping hundreds of dogs and cats happy and healthy. There are many opportunities in which to help from walking the dogs, spending time with the cats or helping at the many adoption events held almost every weekend. Unfortunately we have far to many pets who have been abused, abandoned or left for dead in this part of the country and most are not held accountable for their actions. The county needs to do more to educate the public as well as prosecute the violators so we can stop the non-stop cycle of euthanasia (we are a no kill shelter) abuse and abandonment. At the same time we are very lucky to have a very generous community of residents and businesses that donate their time, money and items that go towards keeping these wonderful animals alive.

We are privileged to have had two senior Hospice dogs to care for. We loved both, especially the last boxer, who was with us 20 months. The staff at HSMC was very supportive and helpful towards us and the doggies. We thank them for this very rewarding experience and look forward to doing it again. Mary Liz & Ralph Ranieri

Just started volunteering at this caring organization. Gotta admit I really didn’t have much hope of seeing any goodness here, after the behavior and treatment of several other ‘rescues’. I was wonderfully surprised and taken aback with the love and affection these animals that are ‘sent to doggy prison’ through no fault of their own, receive. The staff is amazing! Nicole works with the dogs and knows their personalities.. she ROCKs! I’m excited about getting to volunteer for this organization!

As a volunteer at HSMC I haven't been able to spend as much time as I planned, I am also involved with Florida Boxer Rescue, we deal with many surrendered, neglected and abused dogs, rehabilitating them in foster homes and placing with their new, forever homes. This, in essence, is exactly what HSMC does. Animals are surrendered to the shelter where they are evaluated by the veterinarian, provided necessary treatment, medication as well as spayed and neutered. The staff is incredible with the dogs, it is evidenced by the bond staff and dogs have while at the shelter. The volunteers know each dog, provide affection, walks, play and kindness - again, the dogs bond to staff and volunteers until they find their new home. Although it is stressful for an animal to adjust to kennel/shelter life, HSMC strives to make their stay as trauma free and routines as possible. The shelter is a safe landing place, and a sense of security some of these dogs have never had. Next week I am planning to be at the shelter at least for a couple days, to walk dogs. Their walks are a highlight in their day, they all watch us coming down the kennel rows with enthusiasm and happiness. I am honored to be able to be a small part of the endless job HSMC does. These people do so much for unwanted animals.
