Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: To establish a community recognized for responsible pet ownership and humane treatment of animals by offering basic pet wellness and spay-neuter services, public education, and placement of companion animals.

Results: A compassionate organization with a rich history spanning 100+ years, the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia (HSNEGA) works tirelessly to be a leader in creating a community where animals are not abused or abandoned and where no healthy, treatable companion animal will be euthanized for lack of space or other resources. As the sole selective admission facility (only euthanizes in the case of untreatable illness as a humane end-of-life option) in northeast Georgia, HSNEGA is creating a model facility based on a proactive vision to end animal neglect and suffering in our region. The Humane Society of Northeast Georgia's Spay/Neuter Center provides low-cost, high-quality surgery for all pet owners with no residency restrictions. Since opening in 2005, our team has performed 78,000+ surgeries for both owned, public animals as well as rescued animals from animal welfare organizations. In addition, our low-cost Healthy Pet Clinic has offered services to pets and their people since 2010 and annually serves more than 11,000 pets and 8,000 owners with the basic care they need to live healthy, happy lives. We also continue to expand our ability to serve more "hard case" rescues including rescuing and treating animals that otherwise would be euthanized. In FY2017, we remodeled our current facility to be a dedicated clinical space for our new Healthy Pet Clinic which will include three exam rooms, allowing HSNEGA to increase our client capacity and level of service and added an additional full-time veterinarian to our team to provide these services. In FY2018, we will be adding a third full-time veterinarian so that we can continue to try to accommodate the great need for affordable pet care in our community.

Target demographics: Homeless, neglected and abused companion animals and at-need pets and their people.

Direct beneficiaries per year: 1,550+ companion find new homes; 6,500+ animals receive spay/neuter surgery; and 11,00+ animals receive basic healthy pet care.

Geographic areas served: Throughout Georgia with a focus on north Georgia.

Programs: Rescue/adoption of companion animals who've been surrendered or saved from high-kill facilities and low-cost spay/neuter and healthy pet services to ensure every pet has their best chance for a healthy, happy life.

We had the wrong hours and when my husband and I went so that he could help pick our new family member before he had to go to work, they went above and beyond to let us see the babies before he had to go! I was able to go back at their scheduled hours and adopt our new baby!! Thrilled!

We saw our dog on the morning news, I think we beat them back to the shelter to get Einstein. 2 months later we came back for Ginger! Best run facility we have ever seen. Truly a one stop shop- they do it all from rescue to veterinary care. Now we take on fosters for them as well.

I have adopted two fur babies from HSNEG. The facility is very clean and you can tell the employees truly love and care for the animals. Julie Edward's has a hugh heart for animals and goes over and beyond to make sure they are loved and cared for until they find their forever homes. I have also used their clinic for shots and was very pleased with the service.

We have adopted two fur babies from the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia. The staff is very loving and caring for the animals that are in their care. Julie Edwards and her staff are very concerned about where they place these loving and deserving pets. We adopted are first fur baby 5 years ago and she is the most awesome dog. We adopted our second fur baby in October 2017. He had been featured on Fox 5 and was in need of a loving and caring family. When we went to check him out, he was actually in one of the staffs office. They had fallen in love with him. They had taken him in and treated him with love and even did a video on how he looked when he was brought in. All his ribs were actually showing and they affectionately named him Indiana Bones. We brought him home and two weeks later they reached out to us to see how Indy was doing. They even had us bring him in for an update. That's how loving and concerned they are about the animals that are in their care.
I definitely recommend that if you are in search of a loving pet please visit HSNEG. They are pawsome!!!

I have adopted from HSNEGA multiple times in the past; however, at present I have Miss Prissy and Pupper. Prissy is a special needs Yorkie that was rescued from the Hanersham puppy mill and had lived (and bred) in a cage/run along with 450+ other animals, eating bread and water. Pupper was rescued from an abusive situation and found by the authorities as he was being choked and beaten until he defecated. In addition, I have had the opportunity to get to know HSNEGA personnel and volunteers and have learned firsthand the extent of the care and dedication of these wonderful individuals and the exceptional organization that serves our area.

We adopted our sweet pup from HSNEGA in 2014 and it was the best experience ever. The staff was so helpful during the decision making process. They also had him fixed and chipped. We love him so much! We make donations every year to help other future fur-babies get a good start!

We looked for months for the right German Shepherd dog. When we heard about the hoarding case in Candler County, we hoped for one of these neglected babies. Although he still has a ways to go, he has shown huge improvements in health and temperament. He is a beautiful creature. The ladies at Humane Society of NEGA were a pleasure to work with!

Not only have my boys volunteered here in the past and enjoyed the opportunity to visit and care for the animals, when we lost our Ellie this past fall we knew we needed to find a rescue for us and went to visit HSNEGA. Low and behold...We found the most perfect fellow for us there. All of the staff were kind, thoughtful and truly cared about the animals. We were very pleased and continue to enjoy the communications back and forth with them! We are SO very thankful for our sweet Leo and the care he received prior to adoption!

I adopted my first dog, Snow, from HSNEGA back in June 2016. She was from a large puppy mill bust, and HSNEGA made sure I understood what extra steps I might need to do for her as far as care to make her the most comfortable and to help her adjust to her new life.
I loved that they strived to keep the facilities clean, even in the areas where the animals stayed. I have found that that is rare in humane societies elsewhere. I also loved that it was obvious their main priority was the animals and their wellbeing. The staff here truly have a deep love for animals and providing the best care and forever homes possible.
Best humane society I've ever visited!

We've adopted not once but twice from HSNEGA! This organization is top-notch. Well run and the people there really do have the best interests of the animals in mind at all times. They have recently built new enrichment areas for the animals under their care to give them not only a great experience while they are in their care but to better prepare them and make them more adoptable!
They do great things with every single dime they get and are continuously developing better ways to fundraise and then turn that money into the a first class place for the animals in their care!

Of all the non-profits and charitable causes I support, the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia is by far my favorite. The organization is led by Julie Edwards who has more heart and compassion that any 10 people I know.

I have supported this organization financially for over 10 years and have two adopted dogs from them as well. The animals are LOVED, cared for, and rehabilitated until they can find their forever homes. The organization is filled with people with caring hearts and creativity to find the best homes for the often abused and unloved.

Watching the journey of each animal through social media is inspiring and at times heart-wrenching. It does give you just a quick peek at a group that has dedicated themselves to the most vulnerable.

If you want to put your money somewhere where every single penny is used for its exact purpose, this is the place!

Our family has adopted from HSNEGA several times and we have also used the clinic for rabies vaccination and microchipping. It is always so clean and you can tell how much the animals are loved and how well cared for they are.
We had a few heartbreaks with our pets in 2017 and we searching for another puppy to join our family. It seems like every day I was looking at different rescue groups and organizations but none of them ever worked out. After talking with the director of HSNEGA about what we were looking for she found our sweet Oscar. He has filled a hole in our hearts and lives. I would adopt from HSNEGA again and again. They are doing wonderful things for animals, not just in our county but all over the state.

The Humane Society of Northeast Georgia is amazing. We went to look at the dogs one day and we fell in love with Bear, it was closing time and they stayed late so that we could take her home with us that day. The love they show the animals is heart felt when you walk in. They help so many other shelters out. Our sweet girl was from another shelter. We are so glad they give older dogs a chance.

In the process of adopting a mischevious pup that we had met through it's foster family, it was obvious that HSNEGA is a labor of love for its staff and volunteers. I appreciate their conscientious effort on behalf of our community and all of the animals they serve!
