Programs: The hllc shelters, protects and adopts pets in lancaster county, and educates community members about responsible pet ownership. The organizations focus is on providing pet retention services that support owners in keeping their pets in their home rathr than relinquishing them ot a shelter, as well as providing life-saving programs that increase the number of homeless animals placed into homes and with rescue organizations. Saving lives thorugh adoption and rescues: in 2013, 924 cats were adopted or accepted by rescues, while 501 dogs were adopted or accepted by rescues. Preventative care and spay/neuter: the hllc operates a wellness clinic for members of the public to establish positive, long term relationships between pet owners and a veterinarian. Pet owners can bring their companion animal to the wellness clnic to receive preventative veterinary care such as annual exams and vaccinations, as well as to treat common ailments. The hllc also offers spay and neuter surgery to the public's companion animals one day a week, to actively work towards preventing unwanted litters and ensuring the health of adult animals. Animal cruelty investigations: in 2013, the hllc partnered with the pennsylvania spca to support the position of a humane law enforcement officer to cover the lancaster county area. Through this unique partnership, the hllc is able to continue supporting animal cruelty investigation services to protect animals in our community. Foster care programs/domestic violence services: the shelters foster care coordinator places animals in need of extra medical care or socialization into temporary foster care homes. The foster care parents extend the shelters capacity for housing pets as these animals are cared for in private homes. In addition, the shelter provides temporary housing for the pets of women entering the domestic violence services residential programs and other emergency situations on a case by case basis, so that owners can be reunited with their pets once they are in a position to care for them again. Humane education: hllc volunteers go out into the community to talk about the hllcs mission, and to educate community members on the essentials of responsible pet ownership.
