I haven’t; and will never use this place. In fact they aren’t even in my state but it is in the city of two sister organizations. However; following viral stories of them euthanizing a dog; and then attempting to silence those that speak on their terrible behavior in the form of disrespectful conversations and empty threats followed by a ban from a PUBLIC GOVERNMENT FUNDED service (WHICH IS ACTUALLY A LIKELY CONTRACTUAL VIOLATION AND POSSIBLY ILLEGAL IF A PATTERN OF THIS BEHAVIOR CAN BE SHOWN; UNLESS THEY CAN PROVE THE PERSON WAS VIOLENT OR A PHYSICAL RISK) and they would have been sued/shut down here. I have heard disgusting voicemails from staff members of this place posted in National foster groups and already reached out to a couple partners of ours in the area to terminate any working relationship with this disturbing place. I recommend that you look into yourselves.
They do such great work!!
I adopted my dog from there 2 years ago and they made the process so easy and I love my dog so much!
Very fond of Humane Animal Rescue's transfer program, this is where I met my best friend Princess! She was part of this program, she was the best foster failure! Thank you Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh for introducing me to my pug-chihuahua who has brought me so much happiness.
Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh is with out a doubt one of the best places to adopt in Pittsburgh, the staff is knowledgeable and helpful. The facility is clean and the animals look very well taken care of. I definitely recommend this shelter to anyone looking to adopt a pet.
Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh does so much for our community! Their newest effort operation PetsBurgh helps to bring animals from partner shelters (many of whom are over capacity and/or not equipped to handle the animal's special medical needs) to Pittsburgh for treatment and rehabilitation before adoption. Through their transport program, I was fortunate to be matched with Buttercup a senior chihuahua mix. Despite many health issues upon arrival, HARP provided her life-saving medical care and extensive behavior support (while she was in foster care) to help Buttercup learn to trust humans again. A year later Buttercup has transformed from a shy, timid dog who had no control over her bladder because she was so anxious to a confident senior pup who loves going on walks, is an expert traveler, and is even trusting new people. This transformation is just one of many thanks to the amazing staff and volunteers at HARP. On top of the rescue work, their community programs help to keep pets with their pet parents including Ellie's pet food pantry which distributed record amounts of food to pets in need during the Covid-19 pandemic, and their obedience training programs which use positive reinforcement to help owners train their dog(s). While their veterinary clinics are currently only seeing animals that have been adopted from a HARP shelter, their vaccine clinics are open to everyone and provide some of the most affordable and convenient ways to keep Pittsburgh pets vaccinated.
Very impressed with how much HARP can do without any financial support from local or state governments* our donations go a long way!
*HARP relies on donations and income from grants, some of which may be sponsored by various government agencies
Volunteering HARP is a wonderful experience. I feel I am making a difference for the animals. I can sense how grateful they are for the time spent with them, and the love given. The staff
Is lovely and helpful. This is a great volunteer opportunity and I can only recommend it.
When my cat was diagnosed with inoperable cancer I knew she would not be around for long. I went in search for a new furbaby to replace her. I was stuck with the name Oreo and assumed this would be a black and white kitten. Ginger (orange tabby) was adopted to replace Silver. we also had Grey who replaced Black. I think you many see a pattern here. Hence Oreo was to be a black and white kitten. I searched online and found the perfect choice. He was at the East Liberty facility. I was able to make an appointment to meet him (during COVID) and he immediately adopted me as his human. 18 months later we are a great pair, he sleeps with me and plays fetch. Grey (10 years) enjoys playing with his little brother.
Thank you so much for the help I received from you when I thought I was left with no other choice than having to rehome my furbaby. You kept my family together.
The Staff is amazing. We were never rushed when spending time with the dogs. I adopted Harley. His name is now Charley. A perfect fit for our family. Thank you all.
Really awesome place to adopt from. All of the people working here are passionate about what they do and it shows. They really care about finding their animals a good home to be adopted into.
Wonderful experience! HARP is so great, they really go above and beyond for the adopters and the pets, taking the time and effort needed to make sure that the pets and adopters are prepared, ready, informed, healthy, and ready to love their new lives together! Could not have been more pleased. My wonderful new Dog and I are so happy!! Recommend them as highly as is possible!!
Fantastic organization. Always there for the animals in our community and the people who love them.

I have adopted two wonderful pets from HARP, a rabbit and a dog. The adoption process for both was easy and pleasant, and the adoptions staff was friendly, helpful, and excited to let me meet my potential future pets. The environment was clean, and my pets were obviously well cared for while they waited for their forever home.
Additionally, the continued veterinary services I have received from the HARP clinic for my dog have been amazing. I get annual reminders for her vaccines, and they helped me get her skin condition under control so she is happy and comfortable. I feel like I have had continued support since they day I brought her home! Thank you HARP!
We recently lost our beloved dog of 13 years. I stopped by last month to drop off his unused food and treats and I was pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness and compassion of the workers. Mind you, my paradigm was what this place was 10+ years ago. It is so much more welcoming than it ever used to be! They asked to see pictures of my dog and were very genuine in their concern for us. This is the kind of place I can support! Fast forward and we decided to adopt a kitten. He’s healthy, neutered, all vaccines and meds are up-to-date and their adoption fee was reasonable. They do excellent work and I’m thankful to have such a caring organization in my community. Thank you!
Everyone was friendly and helpful. The animal handlers knew each dogs habits and explained them fully before i met the dog. My adopted Brandy came right into our home and is part of our family. We just love her. She was well cared for during her stay at HAR.
Truly the best natured dog. Our Pooh is with us 3 years and is the sweetest, smartest, perfect sized pup we could have asked for. She is our first family dog and we have been told over and over how Lucky we are that we have such a good natured dog. Humane Animal Rescue was so helpful in helping us choose the right dog for our family. They sensed our concern for making a good match and did everything to ensure we would. Thank you!
There's a reason why this place gets a 5-star rating. I've been a loyal member, donor and volunteer for over a decade. All four of my cats are and were rescues, thanks to my beloved Humane Animal Rescue.
When I first moved to Pittsburgh, my dog found a litter of feral kittens in the yard. I was too afraid to leave them on the property because my dog would hurt them if he got the chance, so I brought them to Humane Animal Rescue. The Admissions staff were so kind and understanding, and even though it was late in the day and they had no available fosters, one of the staff members made a plan to get these bottle-baby kittens home herself to give them care.
The people at this rescue care so much about the animals and communities they serve. I am inspired to support them every time I see their efforts to provide animals with loving care and place them into forever homes.
I would give HAR a million stars if I could! I was looking for another fur baby. I contacted them and they were very friendly abd knowledgeable, they answered all my questions. They allowed me to come to the shelter and check out all of the adorable pups available for adoption. I was given permission to take the dogs out of the kennels and play with them. I chose to adopt Pearl the boxer because I heard her background story and it broke my heart. She's been through so much and I knew that she deserves to be loved and I could give her that. More than a month after adopting her, she's doing good and I fall more in love with her each and every day I have her! My other dog's adore her! She was shy at first but has warmed up well, Pearl is sweet and well behaved.
The most wonderful place to volunteer, foster, and adopt. I have been coming to this shelter for over a decade and am continually impressed with the staff's dedication to animal welfare --- and to human welfare as well! Every effort is made to set an animal up for success in its new home. Volunteers are treated with respect and affection and are truly made to feel part of a team. The foster program saves so many lives every year. Fosters are trained, supported, and appreciated. By far the best regional place for animals and the people who care about them. My experience as an adopter has been nothing short of delightful every time. Adoption counselors truly know the animals they introduce to me, and they celebrate a good match with genuine enthusiasm. A happy place!
Humane Animal Rescue is a very devoted organization. The staff are knowledgeable, patient and loving towards all the animals.
I have been a volunteer at the Animal Rescue League for 8 years. I believe the in-house volunteering and the fostering program are top notch. I work with the cats primarily, and when we get overloaded with sick cats and drop offs, our fosters will do everything in their power to save as many cats as possible. The staff (paid employees) work very hard everyday to assist in adoptions and take care of the health of all the animals. The Board of Directors decided to withdrawal there support for the Pittsburgh Steelers after they signed ex-felon dog killer Michael Vick. To publicly refuse to support the Rooneys and the Steelers is a bold and courageous decision and I could not be prouder of my shelter!!!
I rescued two cats several years ago (one was left when her previous owner moved and the other was a kitten I found on the street in front of my house). Animal Rescue League was able to help me by providing affordable healthcare for my new pets. Today I have two happy, healthy and fun-loving kitties thanks to Animal Rescue League!

I have volunteered at the Wildlife Center for years and it continues to be very rewarding - even though volunteering means a lot of scrubbing! I especially like working with birds, and watching the baby birds grow up and the injured birds recover is very gratifying. The staff insists on continued training, so that the animals get the best possible care from the volunteers. Staff are very skilled and very supportive of the volunteers - and fun to be around.

I have volunteered with the ARL for a couple of months now. I was impressed at the rigor of their volunteer training. I was training for about a month before I walked my first dog alone. This really helped to put me at ease, especially since I was nervous around some of the really big dogs. Now, the day I volunteer is the highlight of my week. I love the ARL! I am impressed by their commitment to the community, and the community's commitment to the ARL. The ARL has been around for more than 100 years! I love volunteering here!
I have been volunteering at ARL for 10 months. I am amazed at the love, support and commitment they give to every single animal that comes through the doors. This is an amazing organization.
