Causes: Health, Interdisciplinary Research
Mission: Hips mission is to transform the policies and places people need to live healthy lives by increasing the consideration of health and equity in decision-making.
Programs: Research: hip conducts policy-focused, innovative, and participatory research that evaluates health and equity impacts to support campaigns and movements for social change. In 2017, hip completed eight of these projects across the country with more than 20 community, policy, and academic partners. We also started an additional six research projects in 2017. These projects are of relevance nationally and locally, and focus on topics such as criminal justice, economic security, and immigration.
capacity building: we provide training, technical assistance, and leadership development to build the capacity of public agencies to take action on the social determinants of health and equity. In 2017, hip provided training and/or technical assistance to four governmental health departments to advance health equity and to two organizations to conduct health impact assessment. We provided leadership development to 18 emerging leaders within governmental public health to advance health equity through a year-long leadership development program. We developed and released resources for public health practitioners to improve their systems, policies, and practices to better align with health equity goals. Finally, we trained public health agency staff to increase their understanding of and ability to take action on criminal justice issues.
awareness building: through various communications strategies, hip works to raise awareness of: relationships between social, economic, and environmental conditions and health; the ways in which public health can collaborate with social-justice movements to improve health and equity; how to advance health equity within government; and the successes and impacts of using public health research and advocacy in community-organizing campaigns. In 2017, these strategies included presenting 12 sessions at seven conferences/networks, hosting or presenting at nine webinars, publishing 17 blog posts and one journal publication, sending out 54 email campaigns, and 18 instances of media coverage.
