Programs: Under the direction of the delaware & lehigh heritage cooridor, inc. (d&l), the national canal museum (ncm) is accredited by the american alliance of museums and is a smithsonian affiliate. The ncm redesigned their welcome center and has 14 interactive exhibits detailing 19th and 20th century life and technology. The museum's collections reflect the material culture and document the history of america's canals and navigable rivers, as well as canal-related industries in the lehigh valley. The musuem preserves original artifacts within a linear mile of catalogued archives.
our mules, hank and george, tow pennsylvania's only mule-drawn canal boat ride. Riders enjoy hugh moore park's scenery while authentically dressed crew members describe regional canal history. Admission to the josiah white ii canal boat and national canal museum has continuously increased by 20% for the past three years, including this year.
the museum's education programs emphasize science, technology, engineering and math (stem) education fueling america's industrial revolution via anthracite coal, canals, railroads and related industries. Our award winning "tales of the towpath" curriculum is annually presented to 7,500 students in 85 schools. It has evolved to include a highly interactive website and facebook page which are intergrated into field trips and the museum. The same integration is happening with the 7 week immersion days field trips in hugh moore park where more than 3,500 children participate in hands-on science, technology and cultural lessons. In addition the freemansburg canal education center is a field trip site for bethlehem school district 4th graders. 1,000 students from 16 elementary schools attended this fall.
