As a staff member at HUI, I have been privileged to experience firsthand the great impact our affordable housing program has on individuals with mental disabilities. Our mission to provide safe, supportive, and empowering living environments is what I admire most. Seeing the transformations that occurs within our tenants is truly inspiring. Many have blossomed in ways I never expected such as pursuing a higher education, securing employment, and developing important life skills.

I am deeply grateful for the outstanding work that HUI is doing to support individuals with mental disabilities. As a family member of an HUI staff member, I have witnessed firsthand the profound and positive impact this organization has on both the community I grew up in and the lives of its residents. Their dedication and commitment to improving the well-being of those they serve are truly commendable, making a meaningful difference in countless lives.

I'm forever grateful to Hui for allowing me to have a place of my own since 2003 till 2021 of August of that year I was a tenant of Hui and they really helped me to have a place of my own and to find a place that where i can grow as a individual and allow me to stay in a clean space and not have to answer to anybody who would want to harm me...but instead of having a place that would be dirty they gave me a space that was clean and welcoming and which helped me to grow as a person and bc fhey helped me in that way I was able by the help of my God JEHOVAH he was helping me to get HOC which i have now and I'm so grateful to HUI for giving me that start to be able to get HOC from the beginning......

Great experience working with them! Can't wait to work with them again.

Housing Unlimited, Inc. is an incredible organization. Volunteering as a board member has been one of the most satisfying experiences of my life. Being part of a team that cares passionately for individuals in mental health recovery by providing independent, affordable housing and making a difference is incredibly rewarding.

After learning about HUI, meeting a few tenants, the CEO and others I submitted a request to join the board. The work HUI does for individuals in need in our community is invaluable and I want to be a part of it. I was selected and am looking forward to serving and helping those in need.

Housing Unlimited is a diamond in a rough. It’s something that every city, and state need in terms of progression, and retaining economic growth within their communities. HUI provides a means for those that may not have the economic, social or resourced background to explore a normal, independent, and very fulfilling life. I’ve seen the positive impact on individual growth and long-term consistency by just providing an opportunity that otherwise wouldn’t have been presented or known. The individuals in term, give back to their communities by getting and retaining careers, volunteering in their communities, or various outreach projects. HUI is a diamond in a rough because of the sustainability it provides to each and every community they may purchase a home in. If every city, and state were to adopt the mission of HUI their residents will be more equipped to give back and become valuable members of their community.

I have worked with and provided finances to Housing Unlimited for many years now. They have always exceeded my expectations of supplying the much need help for individuals with conditions that require the assistance and help of others. With such a great need, they have consistently supplied the necessary housing to assist their target population. Abe and his staff should be thanked for such a great job, by all who work with them.

As long-time volunteers, and as both past board members, we have watched HUI grow from its first house to its current eighty-six and counting. HUI has provided affordable, clean and safe housing to its mostly underserved population during all of this time, gaining a noteworthy reputation as a positive force in the community. We know of no other like organization that has matched its efficient use of the resources available to it.

Thoughtful dedication to individuals in mental health recovery has allowed the organization to successfully grow to an impressive level, serving well over 200 tenants in MoCo. More importantly, it is very evident, the mental health of their tenants has remained the priority with the goal of their acceptance and personal contribution within the community. The leadership team at HUI is inspiring. I continue to be impressed at HUI's unwavering thoughtful approach and passion to serve those in need.

Housing Unlimited, Inc serves individuals in our community that are in mental health recovery establish and maintain a healthy and independent living environment. The staff and management of the organization monitor and promote the success of their tenants to ensure that the independent living impact on their lives is maximized and that tenants have the ability to positively contribute to the community. Housing Unlimited relies on charitable funding to manage its 80+ properties and acquire new ones. Currently there are over 200 individuals on the wait list that are often homeless and without adequate support from other programs and so funding is a priority to help serve some of the most unserved members in the community. The organization’s management is under constant review from a diverse Board of Directors to ensure that the mission is maintained and that donor and sponsor dollars are utilized for the maximum benefit to the tenants.

Executive leadership and staff are passionate about the mission and values and do the hard work that the social sector demands. Humility in leadership with a “say what you mean and mean what you say” type approach which is uncommon.

Retiring from the Board after 6+ years, I cannot recommend any leader more highly than the Exec. Dir., Mr. Schuchman. A commendable life of service to make sure residents of Montgomery County who are in need of affordable housing have a voice and a home.

Over my 25 years in helping to produce Housing Unlimited’s community-outreach publications (e.g., newsletters, annual reports), I gained incomparable insights into the organization and its beneficial effects on residents. I interviewed numerous residents who shared their unvarnished personal stories. Every single person praised Housing Unlimited for bolstering their lives by providing a safe and comfortable home, plus the support and resources they needed. It seemed to me that with stable housing, many could and did envision a positive future with confidence to take steps to make it happen.

Housing Unlimited (HUI, Inc.) is an organization that was started over 30 years ago by members of National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) to help individuals with mental health issues live in affordable housing with other peers. I first read about them in a NAMI MC newsletter in the 1990s and have gotten to know the organization since approximately 2005.

I've had the privilege of working with HUI and their tenants over the years in several capacities, including as a former member of their Board of Directors, now a member of their Advisory Board, and some consulting with the Tenants Council. Have been impressed with the organization's scope and growth, know how needed their services are. The level of dedication and hard work as well as innovation is admirable, by their long standing CEO/Executive Director Abe Schuchman and his staff and Board. Our nonprofit, Peer Wellness and Recovery Services (PWRS, Inc.), refers folks to HUI, whether for tenancy or for when they have positions open. HUI makes sure to represent the individuals they serve by hiring former tenants or having them serve on their boards, which means inclusivity and diversity is respected and nurtured. Very happy to recommend HUI as one of Montgomery County, Maryland's, Great Nonprofits!

Prior to 2019 I had never heard of Housing Unlimited, but since then I have gotten to know the organization well. Hearing tenants, and often their family members, speak about the positive impact Housing Unlimited has had on their lives is nothing short of inspiring.

I have known Housing Unlimited (HUI) and CEO Abe Schuchman since the organization's inception. I find the staff and tenants to be amazing humans, impeccable with their word. They are on my annual list of nonprofit organizations I choose to support!
