Target demographics: Our mission is to provide opportunities that encourage, educate and empower our Westside community.
Geographic areas served: The Westside of San Antonio plays a vital role in the city's long and rich history.
Programs: Early intervention programs include kid's place child development and treatment center, in-home parenting education; respite care; cognitive behavioral exercise (CBE), mental health evaluations, and developmental and speech-language evaluations. The goal is to reduce child abuse and neglect and prepare children and families for successful entry into school. (50 families and children served annually).
Senior lunch and senior outreach program include a nutritious lunch for seniors three days a week and activities including socialization, diabetes, cardiovascular education, aerobic exercise, health screenings, and opportunities to engage in volunteer work. The goal is to improve both physical and mental health. (250 seniors served monthly).
The food distribution program includes a weekly breadline, monthly food pantry, and resource and referral assistance. The goal is to provide food to individuals or households in need of food and to connect the individuals or families with other resources they may need to improve the quality of their lives (e. G., awareness of resources available such as low-cost medications, educational/training opportunities, and guidance navigating the system to obtain resources needed) (7,000 boxes of food distributed annually)
Collaborative programs include:
• The sus hijas sewing/jewelry making group.
• The quilting group.
• The thrift shop.
• Back-to-school supplies, thanksgiving dinner, and Christmas
programs for families and children in need.
HNS also provides utility assistance to families in collaboration with Bexar county. The goal is collaborating with other organizations and persons to meet the community's ongoing needs.
