House of Hope continues its goal of Stakeholder satisfaction. The House achieves this goal through continuous Process Improvement and a commitment to transparency. As the roll out of the Affordable Care Act of 2010 (Covered CA in California) continues to full implementation in 2014, the House is taking the affirmative steps necessary to be compliant while assuring no interruptions of its 58 years of excellent service to addicted women.

I was engaged by House of Hope almost 4 years ago as a finance/ accounting/ grant consultant. At the time, House of Hope was experiencing the same economic challenges of the recession that virtually all non-profits were. Even with the difficult times, House of Hope maintained its commitment to provide the highest quality recovery care for women regardless of their economic resources.

Throughout this period House of Hope’ management maintained a policy of openness and transparency into its operations and decisions to its stakeholders, the Board, Regents and Grantors.

Using Process Improvement as a tool, House of Hope adopted changes to its systems resulting in greater efficiencies and improved tracking making sure every dollar got precisely to where it was intended.

This commitment to excellence by management is probably the main reason why the House of Hope has maintained continuous quality operations and service to women since 1955.

I have the honor and privilege of serving on the Board of Directors at the House of Hope San Pedro. I have served on several non profit boards at other facilities and the House of Hope is by far the finest organization. The love and care that is given to each and every person in the program is one of the reasons for the high success rate for the House of Hope. The main reasons for the high success rate is the quality of the management, staff and the full program of recovery that is foremost in the minds of everyone connected to the House of Hope. It is a great joy to see the women come into the House, participate, complete all the programs and then move on to enjoy all a life clean and sober. Jim W

I have had the precious priveledge of volunteering at the House of Hope for the past 10 years bringing in an AA Panel through the Hospitals and Institutions arm of Alcoholics Anonymous. Over my 29 years clean and sober, I've been to numerous programs, sober living situations, and institutions. I have never come across one that is as structured nor has such an incredible level of community involvement. Both of these factors play a key role in what the women who come through these doors take away. They are provided guidance, support, example, and many hours of time from individuals who truly want to see these women become a part of society in a positive and successful way. The testimony is the incredible number of women whom I have watched grow, prosper, and give back.

I have worked as a therapist in private practice and in the treatment industry for past six years. I am honored to write a review for this gender specific program for woman. House of Hope exudes the feeling that I hoped to feel from every treatment/rehab. House of Hope truly possesses the genuine desire to provide treatment for women in need unlike the industry of filling beds and making a profit. This isn't about filling beds, ego, or business this is about providing care for women in need. This provides treatment to women that don't have the resources to go to other treatment centers and yet this place fills a need that is so desperately needed. This warms my heart and gives me faith in the industry. I had the honor of performing in the House of Hope fundraiser as a performer. I was thoroughly impressed with the alumni, board members, staff, and volunteers. The alumni of House of Hope touched my heart with the power, transformation, and genuine gratitude fro House of Hope. They volunteered for the evening and it was one of the most impressive events I've attended and participated in years. It was above and beyond what I expected. Heather Edney gives her heart and soul to this program. I have been sober 9 years in January and House of Hope renews my faith in the the treatment industry. I have had the privilege of serving as a Director of the House for seven years and as President for the last two. I say it is a privilege because it allows me to witness the miracle of changed lives. This program gives women, who can not afford to pay, an opportunity to become beautiful, productive ladies. It gives children the chance to have the mother they deserve and parents the opportunity to find the daughter that had been taken from them by drugs and alcohol. You can not attend a graduation without shedding tears of joy!!

I've been associated with HOH since 1990 when I was brought onto Board. After serving several years, including Board President, I'm now a Regent - the group of ex-Board members that monitors Board activities for adherence to their Charter. They have an outstanding Board composed of a diversity of professional expertise as well as long term membership in one of the 12 Step Fellowships. The current staff leadership is outstanding creating a superb program of recovery for personal emotional and spiritual development of the clients. Both the periodic standing-room-only graduations ( almost monthly) and the strength, energy and growth of the Alumni group, witness to the effectiveness of this recovery culture. The House of Hope is admired as a beacon of rehabilitation for women, not only in San Pedro but the entire group of South Bay Communities. I ENCOURAGE YOU TO CALL THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND ARRANGE A PERSONAL VISIT!

I have been volunteering for the House of Hope for almost 20 years. I have been on fund-raising committees, worked with the women in a group setting, served on the Board of Directors and am presently a Regent. Why do I do this? So I can observe the women becoming who they were meant to be. They blossom into dignified, beautiful women who are now useful members of society. Carole Mason

I have been privileged to be a volunteer/counselor(MFT intern) at House of Hope for the past couple of years. I have observed that the House of Hope is not only a place of recovery but also a place of rebirth. I often describe the process seen in this non profit treatment center similar to the metamorphoses of a butterfly. The women come in broken but as they progress through the program there is a beautiful transformation that occurs within them. They not only work very hard to gain their sobriety but they also have the opportunity to address other suppressed issues that have been left untreated during their addiction. There are several classes that educate and provide the women with opportunity to process subjects that are critical to their walk in recovery. The staff at House of Hope is one that is very team oriented and connected. I have had the unfortunate experience at other non profit organizations where there is much disconnect within the staff and the clients often do not get their needs met. This is not true for the House of Hope. The staff "wants" to be there and it shows. The team members may have their own titles with their specific responsibilities but that does not stop them from helping each other in all areas to adhere to the mission of the House of hope to help the women become...women of sober dignity. I am constantly amazed at the progress made at the House of Hope. There are many days out of the week that we will see a former client come in to the office to stay connected and to reveal a milestone reached in their new life of sobriety. House of Hope is definitely a place that lives up to its name..a place of hope and change. I am very thankful for my experience at HOH and have and will continue to recommend it to others.

In the addiction treatment community there are, (in my opinion), those in the "recovery business" and those in the "business of recovery." As both the executive director of a residential program for women and also a longstanding personal membership in recovery, I consider myself to be the the "business of recovery." I enjoy the excellent and humbling privilege on a literal daily basis, of assisting those who still struggle, to discover the same freedom that was given me long ago. Part of this service is facilitated by offering treatment solutions to those courageous enough to seek it. I take this responsibility very seriously and only refer to treatment facilities that I personally vet and quite frankly those to which I would feel comfortable sending one of my own loved ones. Of all the literally thousands of treatment programs available nationwide, House of Hope is on my very short list of these. As the Executive Director of a women's only residential program, I am even more particular about referring to gender specific programs. On that list, House of Hope is on the very top of my referral choices. One only needs to have a short conversation with any of the individuals on their staff roster to quickly realize that not only is this program a unique and rare testament to what treatment in the best sense should aspire to be, but that the clients fortunate enough to join the House of Hope program will be treated as individuals, not merely another bed filled. I recently referred a close friend who was (like many) not altogether certain that she was ready to embrace sobriety. Her life was in shambles, interpersonal relationships were strained at best and she was profoundly biologically, psychologically and sociologically compromised. Heather Edney, a House of Hope staff member, not only helped this woman feel safe and comfortable about entering treatment, she actually offered to help the emotionally paralyzed and frightened client pack for her stay. This type of personalized response is the talisman of the House of Hope philosophy. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this program - and believe me, I have NO problem honestly evaluating programs. We are not selling sweaters here; these are people's lives. Ms. Edney's commitment and care is the perfect representation of all of her House of Hope colleagues. In addition to their quality of client care, House of Hope also tries to help ANY woman in need. House of Hope staff volunteer endless hours of their personal time toward fundraising support for their scholarship program. The commitment of all involved can easily be recognized in each and every employee - from support staff to board of directors. If you are still reading this affirmation, I think you understand that I am a tremendous fan of House of Hope. I cannot recommend them highly enough - but I do indeed do just that as much as possible. Sincerely yours, Don Grant, Executive Director, Harmony Place Exclusively For Women

I truly learned the definition of charity upon being accepted into the House of Hope. For years I not only knocked on the gates of hell, I was screaming to get in. Instead the white gates of the House of Hope swung open; as well as the hearts of the staff. In the 4 months I lived in residential treatment I was taught how to live life as it shows up. My education there gave me blessings & insights to reflect on daily. I was invited to sober living in August and find myself in safe environment, with many opportunities to give back what I was so freely given. It has been extremely inspiring to witness how many of the women who come to the House from all walks of life, some from the street, some from jail, or elsewhere, and have given up all hope, join the program and regain their self respect and get on a path of clean and sober and turn their lives around. And for most of them, at no cost to them. That personifies the mission of the House of Hope.

I have been volunteering at House of Hope in one way or another for over 20 years now. Why? Because it is such a remarkable place! Women come here to get clean and sober, but they are given so much more than that. They are given back their dignity and learn basic life skills: how to have a healthy relationship, how to get back into the workforce, how to get back to school, how to be reunited with their children...and much, much more. They become healthy physically, emtionally, and spiritually. As a volunteer I get to see women come in broken and beat down, and then I get to see their transformation into wonderful women of sober dignity. I cannot imagine my life without having some connection with this magical place, and I plan to volunteer here as long as I can.

Four and half years ago I was homeless, helpless, hopeless and had no where or no one to turn to. The House of Hope took me in when no one else would and for good reason. HOH allowed me to see me, taught me to love myself and allowed me to realize that I am a life worth saving. I have so much to be grateful for today and I wouldn't have any of it if I didn't get the strong foundation that the House of Hope allowed me to lay. I am eternally grateful, Melissa M.

When I came to House of Hope, almost three years ago, I was directionless and felt hopeless. I was incapable of doing what was necessary to change my circumstances. The lifestyle of addiction led me into a darkness I thought I would never return from. I found security and guidance as well as support at House of Hope. I have begun to build a foundation of recovery and rebuild my life since completing 4 months of treatment. I have had the privilege of continued support in sober living, I am working, supporting myself and paying my bills and living a more fulfilled life than I imagined.

I am grateful to the House of Hope for showing me a new way of life. When I entered the House of Hope in 2006 I had hit bottom, I had been drinking and using for over 25 years of my life. I never thought that change was possible. House of Hope taught me how to live life on life's terms and loved me until I was able to love myself!!! While at the House of Hope I learned coping skills, social skills and responsibility. I also learned the computer skills that helped lead to the job that I have today. But most importantly I gained self-confidence and self-respect. Now 6 years 5 months later I have a life beyond my wildest dreams, I am not just surviving; I am actually living!

I love the House of Hope in San Pedro! I've seen so many women get clean and sober, grow, complete the program, and move on to happy and productive lives. This place is a real life saver. I've been a volunteer and supporter for the past couple of years, and it has been a most rewarding experience. I recently had the privilege of being the Director and Producer for the First Annual House of Hope Talent Show. We raised well over $30,000.00 for the scholarship fund supporting women needing financial assistance. I'm looking forward to the Second Annual Show in October, 2013 already! Johnny B.

House of Hope has taught me to live life on life’s terms. I am a grateful past client and I owe it all to the wonderful & loving staff. I could NOT stop on my own, so I decided to go into rehab. I did 6 months of treatment, and during that time we attended educational groups, 12 step meetings, process group, etc…I left with a better understanding of my disease and learned some coping mechanisms. My sobriety date is October 23, 2003 and by the grace of GOD, I just celebrated my 9th year of abstinence from alcohol & mind altering substances. I can’t say enough about this place.

There are good reasons that House of Hope is called a Foundation. By combining residential, counseling and sober living opportunities, HoH becomes a virtual "launchpad" for a lasting recovery with a strong foundation. The House of Hope Foundation delivers high quality, affordable treatment to women at every stage of addiction recovery. Its Executive and Board leadership adeptly blend revenue from private pay and government-funded treatment, however care for each woman responds to her individual need, not to the funding source supporting it. In my professional experience as a program development specialist and grant proposal writer, I know the research-validated critical value of gender-specific treatment. Women, especially those coping with past trauma and domestic violence, which comprise a large proportion with addiction problems, need a nurturing environment with others who understand her specific needs and who support and understand her. I highly recommend The House of Hope Foundation for its integrity, sound leadership, mission-driven accomplishments, flexibility to learn and grow, and ultimately, for its success in delivering the highest quality of care for women coping with substance use and mental disorders.

Having worked in the field of addiction for over 20 years in both the non-profit and for-profit sector, I can honestly say that House of Hope is one of the most remarkable programs I have ever had the honor of working with. Because there is not an equivalent of "consumer reports" when it comes to treatment programs, families have to rely on websites and skilled intake operators, many of whom work on commission. Because House of Hope is a non-profit, mission driven organization, the team is in a constant state of process improvement to ensure the program is as effective as possible. At the same time, the program involved in a diverse range of fundraising activities in order to provide treatment beds to women who cannot afford to pay. This combination creates an environment where high quality treatment is provided for women who have no where else to turn.

Also, I feel it's important to mention the importance of gender specific treatment. Based on my experience both personally and professionally, I have always felt the most effective treatment centers are those that are gender specific. Because so many women (and men) enter treatment with extensive, complicated trauma histories, co-ed facilities are unable to provide a safe space for women to get the most out of the treatment experience, thereby reducing the it efficacy.

Under the leadership of Bobbi Tschirgi, Executive Director, the team at House of Hope is one of the most dedicated I have ever worked with. Not all of our clients make it due to the nature of this disease. But so many of our clients do, going on to live rich, fulfilling lives in recovery. Heather Edney
