I’ve been volunteering for a year and a half now. Let me just say this sanctuary is basically heaven on earth. To get to work while hanging out with horses, dogs, pigs, goats, and more, It’s a perfect escape from the city and such a fulfilling opportunity.

Personally, I love the physical “work” involved, even if it gets muddy or a little hot out. Just feels like you’re a kid again playing outside! No matter what, there is a job for everyone, and the safety and health of the volunteers always come first.

Once you’re done with your job, then it’s time to interact with all the critters. Volunteers have a range of animal experience. I’d say it’s best you have some general knowledge / background with animals. The ranch will go into depth about how some of the animals may be more sensitive due to their past. You’ll start off with the easygoing ones to get comfortable!

Then you’ll start to see just how amazing these animals are. You’ll be able to create some really special bonds with them. It warms my heart knowing that they can finally feel the safety and love that they deserve. They’ve taught me and healed me as well!

If you need an excuse to get back to nature or to spend more time with animals, this is your spot! In the photos you’ll see the sweet pony I get to sponsor, I named her Josie! She was abandoned and deemed a stray just roaming the desert. However, she’s quite gentle with humans and obviously had a home before. Horses of Tir Na Nog saved her from being euthanized and now she gets to live the rest of her life in peace and safety.

I have been volunteering for Horses of Tir Na Nog for 2.5 years and I absolutely love it! I went from initially volunteering once a month to once a week because it is so rewarding to work with all of the animals. I started with no experience around horses and have learned so much about them. The minute you step foot on the ranch you can tell that the animals are all well cared for and loved. Many of them are older and/or have health issues, so it is so heartwarming to know they have found their forever home. I have volunteered with other nonprofits in the past, but this is one where I truly feel like I am making a difference in the lives of everyone at the ranch.

A few years ago I volunteered with my best friend and worked at Tir Na Nog. We cleaned the stalls and corrals, washed the horses, cleaned water troughs and numerous other jobs. The atmosphere at the ranch makes your senses come alive. The love for animals at this ranch is so uplifting and the love that these animals give you in return just fills your heart with joy. If you were an animal in need of a forever home and you are lucky enough to end up at Tir Na Nog, well you just found the greatest place on earth to spend your remaining days. Truly a little piece of heaven on earth for needy animals.

Horses of Tir Na Nog is a sanctuary for medically challenged animals (primarily equines, but also many other livestock animals and domestic animals) with no hopes of adoption through the shelter systems. All the animals at Tir Na Nog are provided the best medical care possible and lots of love. This is their final home where they live a wonderful life under the care of volunteers and staff. Without Tir Na Nog, these animals would have been lost. Tir Na Nog is a healing place for the animals and many find a new youthful life at the sanctuary. Tir Na Nog is a healing place for me as well as a volunteer. Tir Na Nog is the only sanctuary of it's kind in San Diego County. I'm so grateful for this sanctuary and so are all the animals that live there.

Horses of Tir Na Nog does amazing work providing sanctuary for animals including horses, burros, sheep, goats, pigs, ducks, chickens, dogs and cats. For years, they have worked with individuals and groups, including San Diego County Animal Services, to rescue animals from abandonment and difficult situations. Horses of Tir Na Nog takes in injured, ailing, and elderly horses who have no other place to go. The animals receive extensive veterinary care for medical conditions and/or injuries, and all dietary needs are met. Amy Pat, the founder and administrator of Horses of Tir Na Nog, works with and coordinates a dedicated team of staff and volunteers. The nonprofit is great about keeping everyone “in the loop.” They post regularly with pictures from the ranch to bring us a smile, and keep everyone updated on animal health, and vet and farrier visits. We are grateful supporters of the wonderful work Horses of Tir Na Nog does!

Horses of Tir Na Nog is the very best palce to volunteer! I feel so blessed that a Google search, to volunteer with horses, led me here. I have never volunteered at a horse ranch before. I knew that I wanted to help a worthy cause, and this place couldn't be more worthy. The first thing I noticed was just how large the property is and, how many animals they actually take care of. Besides horses, there are goats, pigs, dogs, cats and even burros... All of them so healthy and happy. The energy is truly something of love and devotion. As a new volunteer, I always have someone that is willing to help me or answer any questions. The volunteers here are amazing, happy and appreciated. Amy-Pat runs the show and, she is the hardest working person I've ever met! We can never have too many volunteers. The orientation process is a breeze and full of information that will help you be a successful volunteer. Please donate your time and/or your dollars...you won't be disappointed!

I have been volunteering for several months at the Horses of Tir Na Nog Sanctuary and am so impressed with the level of care that is given to all of the animal residents. The staff and volunteers are dedicated to the physical and emotional well being of all the animals living at the “ranch”. Amy Pat, co-founder of the sanctuary, is a beautiful person whose love for and dedication to the animals in her care is so natural it is a comfort to witness for anyone who cares deeply about animals, especially those that are unwanted, abandoned, or abused.
As the name might imply, it’s not just horses at this sanctuary. There are donkeys, sheep, goats, alpacas, dogs, cats, pigs, and chickens. This sanctuary relies on the generosity of donors to keep the ranch functioning. There are many items that need regular maintenance and upkeep, from well pumps to shelters and corrals. There are weekly vet visits, medication and the large variety of species specific diets and supplements necessary to keep the animals healthy. Horses of Tir Na Nog is a beautiful animal sanctuary and as a human, I can say I find sanctuary there every time I go to volunteer.

I have been volunteering at HTNN for over a year and I am always so taken by the incredible care and love ALL the animals there receive. The future of many of the residents at HTNN was bleak. Although the hope is always that every animal will be at its forever home forever we know that is not always possible. Here, every animal is fed, medicated, groomed and loved just for being them....no exceptions.
I'm honored to be affiliated with HTNN and am incredibly thankful for all the donations and financial support we get.

Visiting the ranch when I can to help with the burros is incredibly gratifying....watching the goats as they scamper around sharing hay with the horses is such fun to watch.
Running an operation of this size and magnitude is no easy feat, however, seeing the residents being cared for as they are the Horses of Tir Na Nog team is doing it. Many thanks to Amy-Pat and her team

This is an amazing place! I volunteer to spend 3 hours on a Sunday morning 2-3 times per month. My duties include grooming horses and cleaning horse corrals (yes, shoveling horse poo) and I love it!

Why? Because Horses of Tir Na Nog is about kindness and generosity for the sake of being kind and generous and I feel fortunate to be a part of it.

There are more than 100 horses there that due to age, health issues, or both are no longer able to provide utility to us human beings. Keeping a horse is expensive in terms of money, time, and space. So, even most good people would see no choice but to literally dispose of these animals. Yet somehow Horses of Tir Na Nog finds a way to overcome the challenges in order to let these beautiful, sweet animals live out their lives. This really is an amazing organization!

When I first visited a public open house, I was apprehensive that this sanctuary would be a few sad, sorry looking horses in small corrals just waiting for their end of life. Instead it was clearly apparent that these previously abused, abandoned, neglected or health-challenged horses, donkeys, llamas, goats, sheep, pigs and cats were compassionately cared for while provided forever homes in spacious, clean enclosures. Since then I have been donating photo services as well as providing financial contributions to this exceptional nonprofit that provides outstanding services to their ranch residents. This is a very deserving nonprofit that excels in their mission.

Animal Control has its highs and lows. When I first met Simone, it was definitely a low. A victim of severe neglect, and on deaths door, Simone still had a spark in her eyes and somehow, trust in us. If ever a creature deserved to live out her life in comfort and safety it was Simone. Then, Horses of Tir Na Nog came forward to help, and I knew that Simone would never suffer again. Tir Na Nog is permanent where others are temporary. Tir Na Nog saves lives. But beyond saving, they provide the ongoing gift of thriving too. I’m so thankful that they exist and I have had the privilege to work with Horses of Tir Na Nog.

I have personally seen the level of care that they give to each and every animal in their care and the drastic difference that it can make for them. I have seen horses who could barely be in the presence of people because of the abuse that they had face before they arrived who became completely different given the love, support, and work of the people of horses of Tir Na Nog. There are many so called rescues or sanctuaries for horses and many other animals but anyone active in the animal world knows many of those places are just fund raising scam entities that further exploit the animals they claim to be helping while lining the pockets of a greedy human. THIS PLACE, HOWEVER, IS THE REAL DEAL. I’ve had the privilege of having been there and volunteered there and I am so grateful that Tir Na Nog does what they say they do. They really do put the welfare of their resident animals first and ensure them the best life possible for the end of their days. They can’t erase the terrible past most of their beloved animals had previously but Tir Na Nog provides loving, safe, secure and lifelong homes to those blessed to have found their way there.

Someone dumped their senior horse in my horse arena. The neighborhood rallied together to find his owner and get to the heart of why. It was during the recession and no one had room or the money to take on this friendly horse. We found the owner contacted the animal shelter and they did what they could to her and took Beckett to the shelter. Everyone was so sad to see since a great guy in the end years of his life when he was not rideable anymore cart away like garbage. That’s where Tir Na Nog came in and only had room for one horse but there were 2 at the shelter. They took both. Amy did what a entire neighborhood couldn’t do. He lived happily there for 9 years. I’m so happy there is Tir Na Nog, they do so much good, all the time. This is the real deal rescue. These animals get great treatment, vet care, love and freedom. I heard about Horses of Tir Na Nog through a post by a friend on facebook. I spent several years after that volunteering at the ranch and supporting financially when I could. The horses, and other ranch residents - goats, sheep, lamas, dogs, cats, burros etc - were at risk of being put down when they landed softly at HTNG. Here is their forever home where they receive love, compassion, care, medical care for the rest of their lives. No one does it better than HTNG. Giving wonderful animals a loving forever home and the best of care - which they all deserve is what HTNG is all about. I shudder to think of what would have happened to these glorious creatures without this wonderful charity! Great work everyone. My love to all the residents!

This place takes on a lot of animals that actually could find another home or purpose but are flashy or attractive so they claim need to live in the sanctuary. A lot of animals there charge up the feed bill and the vet costs and don't need to be there at all. The director will have the vet team that she works very closely with, put down animals at her whim to make room for more animals. While it is true that a lot of animals there would not have a chance anywhere else and do get extensive vet care, the afore mentioned factors negate the so-called purpose. Based on my knowledge of the animals at the sanctuary at the time I lived at the sanctuary, close to 50% of the animals were 100% healthy without needing to be there at all. All of the animals are confined to their pens. Seldom being let out in the arena sized pasture. For lame or truly suffering horses this might be enough, but don't be under the impression that there are large pastures or that they can run around and graze. That being said all the facilities are extremely clean and all animals are fed impecibly and like I said before they all have adequate vet care.

I was emailed an invitation to tour the property. I was so excited because I wanted to help horses as they help so many humans in very selfless ways. I was impressed to see all of the animals here had to be cared for and would not be adopted out. They were not able to be well enough to go to a new home.

So, all these volunteers come and work with the animals to make their days as comfortable as possible. I’m older, but the property is laid out so you can sit and take your time to really see everything. I felt so proud of the people who were working with the animals. You could see how their love just helps these animals so much.

Then, after the tour, we were invited back. We were informed of what was going on by email. I felt they really do a great job of telling the stories of the facility. One of the nicest things to see is the herd of mustangs. Freedom is so precious.

I try to donate as I can because I believe this organization does tons of good work for deserving animals. I hope you may visit here soon.

Horses of Tir Na Nog is definitely a five-star nonprofit! They really do provide sanctuary for animals who likely have no other options. It is the longest-operating 501(c)3 equine sanctuary in San Diego. It’s been my favorite charity in San Diego County. They have rescued and taken in not only horses and mustangs, but also burros, sheep, goats, pigs, ducks, chickens, dogs and cats. Amy Pat Rigney, the founder and administrator, sees to it that every penny of donations goes to caring for the animals at the ranch. She, her staff and her volunteers are really dedicated to the animals, and they work very hard. Tir Na Nog has worked with San Diego County Animal Services for years to rescue animals, whether they are found wandering as strays, or being rescued from difficult situations. The mustangs were rescued, and the females were pregnant, and they have received special care and kept separate from the other horses. There have been many animals requiring veterinary treatment, and they have lost a number of animals this year to medical issues. Tir Na Nog is great about keeping us, their supporters, “in the loop.” They post almost daily with pictures from the ranch to bring us a smile, or keep us posted on vet and farrier visits, and health and medical treatment of their animals. They’re just diligent, and they have big hearts. When you visit the ranch, you can see how well cared for the animals are, and how happy they are. Tir Na Nog also has great family-oriented fundraising activities (except for during COVID quarantine, of course). They open up the ranch twice a year to the public, and they have had informal restaurant dinners and “Bowling for Burros,” among other events. I can’t say enough good things about Horses of Tir Na Nog – it truly is a five-star nonprofit!

Horses Of Tir Na Nog is an “island” of peace, acceptance, unconditional love, caring, healing and commitment to the precious farm animals that a world gone crazy and bent on destroying itself doesn’t have time for and has forgotten. In this time of isolation, pandemic, dysfunction, anger, hatred, alienation, and a modern society bent on destroying itself, being able to quiet oneself and see online their animal’s photos, read about their personalities and the care being provided them is infinitely more healing and restorative than any medicine modern science can develop or “viewpoints” culture has to offer. If everyone in America could spend a week caring for these precious creatures like Horses Of Tir Na Nog do, most of our problems would evaporate, and we’d be able to have more times in our lives where we could truthfully say “All’s right in the world.”

Everything about this organization is amazing. So much blood, sweat and tears went in to making this a forever home for animals that had no where else to go. Once to twice a week, I would return home with a heart so full of gratitude and appreciation for such wonderful animals that got tossed aside by humans. Back then, we only had about 12 horses and by the time I left there were close to 40, plus some addition farm animals. The passion and commitment of all the volunteers, especially the owner, was unmatched and words can’t describe how truly wonderful these people are. I grew as a person and learned so much about horses than I ever expected to. I cannot recommend this nonprofit enough.

I am a volunteer at Horses of Tir Na Nog horse and livestock sanctuary. This to me is the best rescue ever. It is where animals of all kinds go to live out the rest of their lives in peace and harmony. A place that if it did not help the animals a lot of them would have lost their lives. It is one of the cleanest and nicest places for these animals that I have ever been to.

Horses of Tir Na Nog is fabulous. Each and every animal is provided with the very best of medical care, love, attention and have a permanent home. The alternative to these lovely animals would be euthanasia and if you ever have the chance to visit these beautiful creatures you would know that they have plenty of life left to live and plenty of love to share! When I visit I see happy, and mostly healthy, animals and when I hear the stories of where they came from, I find myself in tears. Who would treat these loving, living beings so badly? Who would just abandoned them to die in pain? They are home now with the best of the best. Thank you Horses of Tir Na Nog for giving them all the care and love they deserve.

This wonderful animal rescue took in two of our family goats when circumstances changed and they needed to be rehomed. One of the goats was disabled, and she was cared for with such tenderness and love. Every resident who lives at Tir Na Nog is blessed with a beautiful, safe place to live out their days. This is a wonderful animal rescue. The staff and volunteers are the best!

This organization does amazing work! Horses, goats, pigs, and more. All get the best treatment. This organization is also an excellent example of how to effectively use social media to engage constituents. So blessed to have them as a shining example of voluntary action in the San Diego region.

Older, unridable horses are too often discarded but at Tir Na Nog they start a whole new chapter that features retirement, love and great care with a new herd of like horses. It’s heart warming to see these rescued horses along with goats, sheep, pigs and other rescued animals as they begin to trust that their days will stress free and their needs will be met. It’s a very special place.

I sadly have never been to the rescue. I follow their page on facebook and know a few of the volunteers. I love to see how they rescue animals no matter what and give them the best that life has. People who truely love them. Just like a family taking care of everyones needs physical and emotional. They also receive exceptional vet care. I do hope to visit the rescue when I visit Cali.

I worked for the animal shelter that Horses of Tir Na Nog pulls from (including the mustang herd) and let me tell you, Horses of Tir Na Nog is one of those sanctuaries that, if I were a horse/goat/llama/dog/cat/chicken/etc. I would want to be rescued by them and live there too. They truly do care for every single animal they rescue and go above and beyond to make sure they live their best and most healthiest lives possible. If I could give Horses of Tir Na Nog a billion stars, I would.

I couldn’t think of a more deserving non-profit. They are in charge of over 90 unwanted,Senior, broken, abused horses and allow them to live the rest of their lives only knowing love and compassion. Not only are there horses, but a wide array of other livestock and domestic pets. They get top notch veterinary care, endless love and attention from the volunteers and bring in the animals that need them the most. San Diego, CA has a huge issue with unwanted pets, if it wasn’t for Horses of Tir Na Nog these unwanted lives wouldn’t exist at all. I hope and pray they are chosen because their is no doubt in my mind that they are deserving of it, and so much more. (My photos and videos are too big. :-( )

This animal sanctuary is remarkable not only for it's beautiful landscape, but also for the noticeable quality of care provided for their creatures great and small. It is inspiring to see first hand, animals that were terribly neglected, now thriving at Horses Of Tir Na Nog. Knowledgeable and dedicated, the staff and volunteers also make every visit memorable.

As a lifelong horse lover, and long-time animal trainer, I have nothing but amazing things to say about Horses of Tir Na Nog. This is a sanctuary full of people who pour their hearts and souls into caring for ALL of the animals taking refuge there. Amy Pat Rigney is one of a kind in her efforts, passion, and generosity. One of my very closest friends has been volunteering there for years. She works full time, and still travels 60 miles once a week to offer her time, knowledge, and most importantly, her love. ALL of the volunteers there make such sacrifices. These people GIVE everything and DO everything for those animals. I would highly encourage anyone to give a little of their own time, support, and love to this organization.

I have volunteered and been a donor for about 6 years. I started with cleaning corrals and brushing horses and there is nothing like getting up close and personal with all of these incredible animals - horses, burros, sheep, goats, pigs, cats, dogs and even llamas and an alpaca. (I never thought I would get to pet a llama, being pretty much a city gal, but I have now.) Now I am older and can't do as much physical work, but I help with inventory and selling of shirts and calendars and other items at our fund raisers because I feel it is so important to give these fabulous animals a loving forever home. Many were abused before they came to Horses of Tir Na Nog, and many have medical issues, so none of them can be adopted. I will continue to donate even when I retire next year and am on a fixed income because many of the animals started with sad stories that now have happy endings and I want to see that continue.

This organization is phenomenal. The staff are so enthusiastic and passionate and create such a welcoming environment. The animals of course are always a joy to be around and connecting with them has been so special. As a college student, working with the horses has given me a much needed outlet for my stress and a chance to relax and reset myself. I look forward to coming up to see all the animals every week and it is consistently the highlight of my week. I am incredibly grateful to have found this organization and honored to play even the smallest role in providing the animals with a safe home and the care they need. I have the upmost respect for Amy Pat and her staff and the work they are doing changing the lives of these animals.

Horses of Tir Na Nog is an incredible nonprofit and every moment I spend there is wonderful. The founder, Amy Pat, has truly put her entire heart and soul into this organization and it really shows. I have the pleasure of working at the ranch once a week, and I've had the opportunity to really see how the ranch works and how every animal is treated. Amy Pat knows every animal by name, knows every story by heart, and loves each animal with all her soul. Anyone who speaks to her about ranch's history can see how much she loves what she does. Because I am on the property often, I have participated in many fun events and met lots of lovely people, and I've also experience some of the more serious side of the ranch. Any injured or sick animal is top priority here, and the safety of every volunteer and every animal is so precious to the organization. Most of the animals are older and have existing medical issues (which is why they're on the ranch, in most cases) so it can be unfortunately common that animals pass away suddenly, but I've been on the property during serious/emergency vet visits and I've seen how hard Amy Pat and the other employees (namely Linda) fight for each and every life. Overall it's just an incredible place and I've never been anywhere quite like it. The actual property is well cared for and maintained, and the animals are all well-socialized, friendly, and obviously happy. This place is absolutely a sanctuary for every animal on the ranch.

I have been volunteering at Horses of Tir Na Nog for over 2 years. I absolutely love this organization. I have seen several new animals come to the ranch over the last two years and am always impressed with how well they are cared for. The individual needs of the ranch residents are always met. As a volunteer I love the ability to go to the ranch for three hours on a Sunday and spend time with the horses, burros, goats, sheep, pigs and all of the other wonderful animals on the ranch.

HTNN is an exemplary sanctuary. Compassionate, smart, clean care for all of the animals who reside there. I was amazed at how well managed and well run HTNN is, impeccably maintained with love. And the stories of the animals who live there, proof is in those stories! If I could give 10 stars I would!

I am incredibly grateful to have come into the amazing opportunity to volunteer with Tir Na Nog. It has literally changed my life and kept me far more in line with my soul and purpose than I could ever have imagined. The generosity and kind spirits of not only the animals, but the people who operate and volunteer their time to make this place what it is, brings a much needed hope to my life experience in this bleak world. THANK you Tir Na Nog, for nurturing these amazing animals and for putting your life's work into creating something beautiful in this world. I am SO HONORED to be part of it.

This is an incredibly well run organization run by an amazingly dedicated person (or two)and group of volunteers. It boggles my mind that this organization has so many well cared for, loved, nurtured and now, healthy animals onsite. If you are thinking of donating to a deserving non-profit, this one would do well by your donation. Whether you donate or volunteer, you can be assured that your dollar and your time goes fully towards the animal's needs and the needs of these animals, due to the condition that most of them arrive in or from, are significant. I can't think of a better organization to support with my money and my time.

This place is a danger to all that walks on the property. Volunteers got a seminar on how to brush and how to halter horses, but horses of tir Na nog didn't teach the volunteers the right way to halter or brush horses. They protect themselves by giving people the most calmest horses which is understandable but those horses can get spooked over anything and badly hurt someone all I'm saying to all beginners in the horse world is do your research on this ranch and equine expertise before the next person gets hurt; it could be you. They don't take care of their animals as well as they could and their horse and managing skills are poor. Their standards are also below poor.

The Horses of Tir Na Nog is a permanent equine facility for abused and/or ill animals which the San Diego County Animal Services, San Diego Humane Society/ASPCA, or the Escondido Humane Society have determined should not be re-adopted because past abuses of them were so severe. The Horses of Tir Na Nog's Ranch holds 43 horses, 4 mules, and assorted alpaca, sheep, and squirrels, and there is room for more. Their stables are clean. The animals are well fed. Medical and dental needs are taken care of by the East County Animal Care Clinic. Volunteers brush and interact with them through walks, training, and bathes. The San Diego Animal Services has stated that since 2008 no horse has had to be put down because all have been taken by Tir Na Nog. The alternative would be death to these animals whose only blame was to be held by an abusive owner. To these equines living at the Horses of Tir Na Nog Ranch life is Heaven.
