Causes: Civil Rights, Community Foundations, Lesbian & Gay Rights, LGBTQ, Nonprofit Management, Philanthropy
Mission: Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Horizons Foundation serves the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community by making grants, strengthening LGBT organizations and leadership, and increasing philanthropic giving.
Results: By the end of 2008, Horizons Foundation will have made approximately $18 million in grants since our founding in 1980. In addition to making grants, Horizons also promotes giving as part of a healthy, vibrant, compassionate LGBT community. We are also home to the LGBT Community Endowment Fund, a permanent resource for the entire LGBT community being built primarily through planned gifts. Horizons’ grants not only provide direct funding for LGBT organizations, but are often their first or only source of foundation support. Organizations that received grants from Horizons Foundation early in their development include NCLR, San Francisco AIDS Foundation, Project Open Hand, Transgender Law Center, Lyon-Martin Women’s Services, Gay Asian Pacific Alliance, and LYRIC.
Target demographics: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people and our allies in the San Francisco Bay Area
Geographic areas served: Nine-county San Francisco Bay Area
Programs: Horizons' programs include grantmaking to LGBT organizations (both emerging nonprofits and community institutions), donor services and education, leadership development opportunities for the leaders of LGBT organizations, and advocacy for LGBT issues within the world of mainstream philanthropy. Our programs are deeply informed by the direct participation of the community we serve.
