Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: Hope for horses is a nonprofit public benefit corporation dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and retraining horses. Our achievements this year have led to the adoption of several horses, and the chance for adoption to many others. Most of the horses are off the track (ottb) thoroughbred race horses looking for a new job, and a new human. We have seen many of these horses turn into fabulous saddle horses, great companions and even show horses in a variety of disciplines

Anita has a way with horses and knowing who would work well with what horses. Found my first horse (my heart horse thru this rescue) and just love the place. Been a long time that I've had a place I've felt like I belonged and could be myself.

Hope for Horses posted about a grey mare who had been severely neglected and was in need of a home to provide training and a job. Hope for Horses had cared for her for several months to get her weight back up and her health improved. We talked with Anita and decided we would try her and see if we could provide what she needed. Anita let me come and meet her and was no pressure about adopting her and let me set to know her. We took the mare home a few days later and she has done great. We are very happy we got involved and will do so again.

The owner Anita is dedicated to the horses, she lives onsite and is always checking the horses, water and feed levels. She is extremely knowledgeable about horse health and is proactive with deworming and medications, different types of feed, farrier care, and dental care. Visitors are always welcome. I came to an open house about 5 years ago and signed up that day to sponsor "Sugar", a Mustang from Nevada. Volunteering at the ranch is very rewarding and the horses love the activity and attention they receive. I Love this place!

I started lessons at Hope for Horses back in March of this year and I couldn’t be more pleased! Anita is so kind and compassionate to her horses, and truly has their best interests at heart. Every horse on the property is happy, healthy and well fed. I am so thankful to be part of such an incredible organization, and look forward to switching into a volunteer role very soon!

I began volunteering at Hope 4 Horses almost a year ago, and was inspired by Anita’s knowledge and her dedication to her horses. She goes above and beyond to not only take great care of her horses, but also makes sure to involve her volunteers and make sure everyone is always learning. This is a great organization!!

We are a horse rescue outside of Sacramento, California. While on the small size we are mighty. For example we repurpose, retrain, and rehome Off the Track Thoroughbreds, we have taken in retired pack mules, foals from PMU mares, abuse cases, or just plain unwanted horses. We also provide a loving home to horses that can't be rehomed.

I have been with this organization for around three and am still amazed by this terrific group of volunteers who put in so much time and effort to improve the lives of these magnificent animals.

I had spent many years volunteering for a small animal sanctuary but when that ended I decided to return to my first love, horses. I found Hope 4 Horses on line and went out to investigate. What I found was a group of wonderful caring people and an organization that makes a difference everyday in the lives of the many horses who live there.

My daughter and I came to Hope for Horses about 5 years ago. Fell in love instantly with their program and Anita. We have learned and continue to learn so much. We have adopted 5 (who’s counting..) horses from the rescue. The facility has become a sanctuary for me and a classroom for both of us.

This is my third year working with Hope for Horses and I love it. There are so many opportunities to grow your skills, and we work with a lot of off the track thoroughbreds which are a deep rooted passion for me.

My daughter Jen has been going to the KISS therapeutic riding program at Hope for Horses for three years. She is nonverbal, has autism and epilepsy, and she absolutely loves going for her ride on Parker each weekend! When she knows the weekend is here, she gets her helmet to let me know she is ready to go ride! She gets quite a workout when she decides she is ready to do some two-point with Parker! Her lesson is on Sunday mornings, it can be an exercise in patience waiting for time to go. Jen's absolute favorite time is the "trail ride" at the end of each lesson! We are both so appreciative of the opportunity Jen has to spend with Parker and the folks at Hope for Horses.

Anita and Hope For Horses are the best. After a bad experience Anita was there for me.
I picked up Set Dancer "Set" from Anita and put him in 30 Days training. These pictures are when we got him home. Set loves his new home and Thanks to Hope For Horses and Anita I am a horse person and horse lover for life.
I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone.
Thank You Again

I love love love H4H!!! Works cannot describe how amazing the work they do is. I adopted a young OTTB Gelding from them in 2016 and he has gone on to have a very happy career and spoiled life with his new owner! I loved working with Anita and it was clear she she cared so much about every horse that came through her doors. When I'm ready for another project I will 100% go back to H4H. There is nothing more rewarding than helping a horse realize it's potential and find the right match!!

We have used Hope 4 Horses many times and refer anyone looking for a horse to them. Our horse, Sparkle, came to their organization with an umbilical hernia. It was repaired and we adopted her. She is a perfect addition to our herd!

Hope 4 Horses and Anita make aninals their top priority. I have a rescued off the track thoroughbred that was unhandle-able by many trainers (sent to slaughter by his prior owner). They see him as a piece of cake. They love him and care for him as if he is their own. And all the while tireless pulling animals out of harms way and doing everything they can to make every animal count. They truly love and care.

I started volunteering at Hope for Horses after I lost my big off the track thoroughbred boy in tragic circumstances. Anita invited me to come out and work with her, helping to train and tune up other off the track rescues. It has been a great experience and Anita is wonderful with pointers and advice.

It's definitely a special place!

I have a ridden a few horses that my trainer has gotten from Hope for Horses. I just have to say I fell in love with these gorgeous horses! They are some of the most naturally talented, quiet and best disposition young Thoroughbreds that I have worked with. They just want to please and be your best friend. I think it is absolutely fantastic that this organization helps these big hearted animals find a second career and matches them with the perfect opportunity for them to show their full potential!

I can’t say enough good things about hope for horses! I have been a professional in the horse world for 11 years on both the east and west coast, I appreciate their honesty and knowledge of horses. They have connected us with some one in a million horses. Our horses are exactly what they said they would be. I am so thankful to have been able to work with and support this non-profit. This is the kind of honesty our horse community needs! Highly recommend!!!

Anita, founder of Hope 4 Horses, is amazing and is in it for the long run. She works tirelessly for the horses. Volunteers can not only learn but enjoy hands on experience. I believe that she is fiscally responsible in the management of this organization. Personally, she was there immediately when I needed her regarding a rescue horse. This is not a sanctuary for horses. It is an organization to rehab and train horses for just the right person waiting for them. If you are interested in learning about The Horse, come volunteer and watch this amazing woman and other staff.

Volunteering with Hope 4 Horses in Galt, California for the past year-and-a-half brings me great satisfaction. The work I do there, whether cleaning stalls or assisting with adaptive riding lessons, makes a positive difference to the horses, the students, and my community. Not only do I get to be around horses on a regular basis, I also learn more about horsemanship and about myself every time I'm there. The H4H Board members and the other volunteers are a wonderful group who support each other in observing safe horse-handling practices as well as engaging in activities to enhance the H4H programs. Amazing organization! Horses care and rehabilitation are a top priority at Kiss ranch. Every time I've been to Kiss for lessons and or clinics I leave with admiration for what Anita and all the volunteers do to meet the needs of our equine friends. The care and rescue of an animal in need is their priority, as I've witnessed countless times. HOpe for Horses marshals help; resets their schedule to meet an animals need.

Hope For Horses is an outstanding organization that is operated by people who make the long term welfare of the animals first priority. Anita, who founded and runs it, is able to provide each animal in her care whatever that particular individual needs to heal, learn, or overcome any hardships to become a happy, healthy being. For each animal ready to start their new lives, she uses her people skills, large network of connections and incredible matchmaking talents to find them perfect homes. Hope For Horses consists of people who have an amazing understanding of horses, outstanding horsemanship skills and who are constantly educating themselves to excel even more and continue to improve.

Hope 4 Horses is so much more than a horse rescue! You can get riding lessons - for able-bodied riders of all ages and experience levels, or for those with special needs. You can meet all kinds of horses from Polyanna, the mini, to Lazarus, the Percheron and everything in-between. You can board your horse if you have one, and if you don't, Anita will match you up with your perfect horse - or you can sponsor a horse in need of his own special person. You can learn everything you ever wanted to know about horsemanship. You can even volunteer - with the therapeutic riding program, doing ranch work, office work, helping with special events, etc. You can meet some wonderful people who are as knowledgeable as they are dedicated to what they do and you'll have fun while you're at it!

We took our Girl Scout troop here and had a wonderful day. The staff was so friendly and patient with our little girls. We had a big group and they each got to ride and spend time grooming and petting the horses. It was so hands on and professional, we would go back without a doubt!

I love Hope for Horses. They do amazing work because along with rescuing and training horses, they also incorporate helping humans and the community. I started volunteering about 2 years ago and I love it. Every time I am out at program, there is some sort of event involving the community or a horse being rescued. Hope for Horses is so much more than a rescue and I believe that it should receive this award because of all it does for its community.

I encountered Hope 4 Horses at a very low point in my life. The dedication of the other volunteers and the director, Anita Markiewicz, gradually brought me back to being a more productive and happier person. I have been involved with horses for most of my life and have always wanted to give something back by helping horses in need. Hope 4 Horses takes in horses from bad situations and gives them a new lease on life, finally finding them "forever" homes or providing them with a safe retirement. Hope 4 Horses means hope for people as well, including the therapeutic riding program and community outreach days. I can't recommend this program enough!

Hope for Horses is a wonderful place for horses and people to become better acquainted with one another! I have experienced first hand the love and care they give the horses at the ranch. From horses close to death, to off the track warm bloods in need of a new future, H4H is the saving grace for most of these animals. It is also a place to find your true self as well. After 3 years of volunteership at Hope for Horses, it has changed my life. I get to spend quality time helping with the therapeutic riding program that ensure every horse and rider build confidence with their own struggles in life. I can't imagine my life without these wonderful people and horses at H4H! They truly make a difference in more ways than one!
