Mission: To provide low income housing and support services to elderly and handicapped persons.
Programs: This organization provided housing and supportive services to the elderly and persons with disabilities through the operation of a 58-unit apartment complex in phoenix, arizona. The organization provided decent, safe, sanitary and affordable housing to 69 residents: 1% between the ages 18-61; 55% between the ages 62-80; 43% between the ages 81-95; and 1% 96 and over. Approximately 34% of the residents are considered to be frail elderly, while about 15% are considered to be at-risk elderly. Hong ning house employs a service coordinator to connect residents with necessary and meaningful social services in the community. The service coordinator provided assistance to over 90% of the residents. Some of these services included: benefits/entitlements, case management, crisis intervention/support (continued on schedule o) counseling, family support, general info/referral, health care services, home management, meals, translation/interpretation and transportation. Because the majority of residents at hong ning house have limited english proficiency and primarily speak mandarin or cantonese, translation and interpretation services are in high demand. Fortunately, the service coordinator and the manager speak these languages, providing a critical service to the residents. The service coordinator arranged resident in-services, including speakers for: safety tips on walking and street crossing, health talk, high blood pressure & cholesterol, healthcare enquiry services, brain health training, food bank recertification, and nutrition and healthy diet. The service coordinator facilitated on-going weekly or monthly programs including: transportation to the ranch market grocery store, free hair cuts, tablet/computer class and food bank deliveries. Residents enjoy additional resident-led activities including: birthday parties, holiday celebrations, bible studies, rejuvenation exercise, and a movie night. Many residents of hong ning house are actively involved with the nearby chinese senior citizens center. Each weekday, the center provided transportation to and from the apartment community for the residents to attend functions and meet with social workers if needed. The center provided nutritious meals and social activities to its participants.
