Mission: Homestretch's mission is to empower homeless families with children in Virginia to attain permanent housing and self-sufficiency by giving them the skills, knowledge and hope they need to become productive participants in the community. Homestretch accomplishes this mission by providing families with subsidized housing and support services for up to two years. This long-term approach gives them sufficient time to develop the skills necessary to obtain and, more importantly, maintain permanent housing. In addition to housing assistance Homestretch provides families with individualized case management; employment counseling, skills training and job placement assistance; budget and credit counseling; domestic violence counseling; substance abuse counseling; legal counseling; ESL instruction; life skills training; and child/teen enrichment activities. Homestretch places a special emphasis on the children of homeless families as the program's ultimate goal is to break the cycles of poverty, abuse, and low self-esteem and help these children develop into competent caring adults, better equipped to raise the next generation.
