Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Food, Food Programs

Mission: Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen is located in the heart of Chelsea in New York City. What started as a temporary feeding program in 1982 has now become the largest in the tri-state area, and we've served over 7 million meals since then - but the real story is how we help guests move off the soup kitchen line into employment, their own homes, and a more manageable and fulfilling way of life. Not only do we provide a hot meal to about 1,000 New Yorkers in need every single weekday, our dedicated counseling staff also work with our guests to connect them with benefits, housing and job interviews.

Results: The soup kitchen has never missed a serving day in thirty five years, despite hurricanes, blizzards, transit shutdowns and terrorist attacks. On our very first day we served 34 meals - now we serve upwards of 1,000 every day and at the height of the economic recession our volunteers and supporter made it possible to serve up to 1,800 in a single meal service. We have expanded our programs to respond to the changing needs of our guests, and today we offer counseling, referrals, healthcare and enrichment services, as well as a seasonal Writers' Workshop that showcases the creative abilities of our guests and volunteers. On average our counselors hold individual daily sessions with over 1,500 guests per month, providing them with vital assistance and advice: "I didn't know I could get retirement benefits. Caroline showed me that, and made the application for me. The money came through just as I was about to lose my apartment. If it wasn't for Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen, I'd be on the streets now." - Jose, former soup kitchen guest "I didn't want to go to a soup kitchen, but I had nowhere else to turn. It was nothing like I expected - everyone made me feel so welcome, like I was coming home. I had this feeling I hadn't had in a long time. I felt at peace. I knew we were going to make it no matter what. " - Susan, mother of five

Target demographics: feed the hungry, comfort the afflicted, seek justice for the homeless, and provide a sense of hope and opportunity to those in need.

Direct beneficiaries per year: about 1,000 hungry and homeless New Yorkers every weekday.

Geographic areas served: New York

Programs: Soup kitchen Auxiliary & Enrichment Services Writers Workshop

The greeters and volunteers are always smiling and friendly, the food is healthy and tasty, the live music is relaxing, and there's always buttered bread or a snack for the road.

A wonderful organization, doing tremendous good. We brought five college students from rural Vermont to NYC for a week to learn about food systems, and this was a highlight of the trip. The staff and other volunteers were all super organized and friendly. An amazing experience.

Our Church Choir and other members came to New York to perform at Carnegie Hall in June 2017. 10 of us who were not performing that day volunteered to help feed at the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen. We were all given different duties and it was a great experience and a blessing to us to see the hungry and homeless eating a good meal and enjoying their time there. Serving is what Christ has called us all to and we thank the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen for giving us the opportunity to do so.
May the Lord bless you and always provide as you continue to serve Him there.

In Christ's Love,

The Heights Baptist Church
Colonial Heights, Virginia

It was a great experience for us. Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen was very organized and made the work enjoyable. It's so nice to be a part of something that helps others in so many ways. It made me realize, more so, how I would like to do more healing and giving work in the future. Thanks for having us and being so hospitable!

There is no greater non profit than Holy Apostle. They have been walking the walk for decades. It serves its community not only with food for the body, but with food for the soul as well. They offer all kinds of services for their guests; from writing workshops to toiletries to health sevices, and so much more. Besides which they make it super easy to volunteer, with an interactive online sign up. I am always so honored and proud to be able to say I am part of this organization.

Today was my first time at a soup kitchen and I found HASK to be a very friendly and organized program. Everything from introduction to new volunteers, assigning tasks, and the service itself was done in a very neat and orderly fashion. The staff was extremely kind in acknowledging all the volunteers and the guests. My time there felt very rewarding and I definitely look forward to going back there!

We took out youth group for their first mission trip to help out at the soup kitchen of HASK. the staff there was encouraging and helpful, running a very well organized program. Everyone was very polite and the experience left both the youth and the chaperones that accompanied them desiring to help more. There are already plan to come back again in the near future as a result of the positive experience at HASK.

Great experience at HASK this week. I've been bringing my work teammates to HASK for over 5 years and have come with three different companies. HASK does a great job - very well organized and clear roles for the volunteers - very appreciative of their efforts. This year we served ~800 meals and got to work with some great regular volunteers. The whole operation is classy & well run. I hope our experience at HASK sparks some of my employees to continue volunteering and giving back in their communities.

For eight years I have brought a group of ninth graders from several high schools in Manhattan to a soup kitchen or food pantry during the month of April to volunteer their services. Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen has been the best experience thus far. The staff were so friendly and helpful when we arrived. Throughout the late morning and early afternoon, the guests were welcomed warmly by the staff and volunteers. From the serving line to the bussing of trays, every aspect of this "soup kitchen" was managed professionally. A professional staff in a dining hall at a college could not have done a better job. Throughout the day, the staff, the longstanding volunteers, and the guests all engaged us in friendly conversations. I haven't heard "God bless you" as many times in a decade as I heard in four hours at Holy Apostles. On our way back to school, all of the students echoed my feelings about this experience. If you want to help an organization that knows what it is doing and really cares about the people it serves, Holy Apostles should be high on your list for volunteering and monetary assistance.

I went with my advisory to serve and it was an enriching experience for all! We were warmly welcomed and all activities were well coordinated. There was not a wasted second. All the time was spent meaningfully supporting the wonderful servants at Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen serve more effectively. We would all go again!

Thanks for finding a place for our hands :)
