Mission: As tourism becomes an ever-increasing factor in the economy of Southwest Virginia and Tazewell County, it is important to maintain the public?s interest in order to support it. Historic Crab Orchard Museum encourages tourism by presenting the rich culture and history of the Appalachian region, explored daily by local residents and visitors traveling to our area from other cities, states and even outside the United States. The rural community surrounding Historic Crab Orchard Museum has great need for educational and cultural opportunities. There are very few such places in the surrounding area. Our Museum is one of the most heavily visited tourist attractions southwest of Roanoke. In an economically depressed area, which has long relied on the coal-mining business, tourism plays an important role in our region?s potential for economic development. One of the objectives of the Museum is to provide area residents who are interested in learning history, drama, traditional arts, and interpretation an open environment in which to do so. No other such incubator for creativity exists in the immediate area, which limits the development of such interests. The Museum fills this vital need in the community. Tazewell County is an impoverished area and many residents could never travel to Jamestown in order to see first-hand how the early settlers lived and interacted with other cultures.
