I am both a volunteer and a donor to Helpmate and I believe they are one of the best non-profits I've had the pleasure of working with! Their attention to and concern for their clients is evident in every aspect of their work. Their treatment of their employees, whose work is inherently taxing and stressful, is fair and compassionate. They are very present in the larger community and do a great job of outreach to survivors of domestic violence. Their services cover the gamut of what any survivor would need in the process of coping and moving ahead with their lives.
Helpmate is a blessing to the community and to everyone they serve. I first came into contact with helpmate 2 years ago when I unfortunately needed their services but fortunately for me and many others the services were there and available . Everyone who is a part of helpmate from it’s direct services, intern, or a volunteer they meet you with a grace, compassion and a kindness that is hard to find. They’re always ready and eager to help in anyway they can. And they truly care for and about the work they do.
I have been a volunteer in various capacities with Helpmate for over 35 years. Before retirement, I was a practicing physician who learned early in my career that people trapped in abusive intimate partner relationships could become sick, and blind to ways out, and I learned that a caring and informed advocate could show them a way back to safety, health, and wholeness. Helpmate was my consultant for these challenging cases, and with the root cause of the presenting symptoms addressed, true healing could begin.
I spent almost 14 years working in Domestic Relations Court in another state and know well the need to provide open and safe access to services for victims of domestic violence. The mission of Helpmate is to work with our community to eliminate abuse and fear by providing safety, shelter, and support for victims/survivors of intimate partner domestic violence. Helpmate does an exceptional job in providing a full range of coordinated services to victims that may include immediate counseling, housing, financial support, medical services, legal aid, and law enforcement resources. Sometimes it means just having a trained professional to listen and provide emotional support and comfort. The staff are outstanding and committed to the work of breaking the cycle of domestic violence and saving lives in the process. Please support and recommend this outstanding nonprofit organization if you can find it in your heart to do so.
I am a volunteer on the Helpmate Hotline, which assists survivors of intimate violence in multiple ways. Prior to moving to Asheville, I was a volunteer on the hotline of another Domestic Violence Agency in a much larger city and the services at that agency were nothing compared to the services at Helpmate! It's astonishing what an agency the size of Helpmate does for survivors of intimate partner violence! From
Case Management to Court Advocacy to Crisis Intervention, Helpmate is absolutely vital to this community. Every single staff person (and volunteer) are passionate about the work they do to help survivors realize they do not have to live with a violent partner. This is an incredible program and I am proud to be a Helpmate Volunteer!
