Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Homeless & Housing, Housing & Shelter, Human Services, Military & Veterans Organizations, Philanthropy, Public Foundations, Veterans

Mission: Helping a Hero is a 501(c)(3) non profit, non-partisan organization, founded in 2006, that provides support for military personnel severely injured in the war on terror. Our principal activity is to provide specially adapted homes for qualifying service members through partnerships made with the builders, developers, communities, and the veteran. Helping a Hero strives to engage the community in providing services and resources for our wounded heroes and their families. Additionally, Helping a Hero provides support programs such as marriage retreats, caregiver retreats, recreational activities, emotional support, and financial support.

Results: Helping a Hero has awarded over 100 homes in 22 states. 10 homes are in varying stages of the planning process and veterans will be moving into homes throughout the year. We have also served hundreds of veterans through our Operation Merry Christmas program and the Community Shower Gift Card program.

Programs: The wounded warrior home program is the signature homebuilding program for severely wounded warriors injured in support of the global war on terror. Traditionally, homes are built in master-planned communities with the developer and builder donating time and materials toward the construction of the house, in addition to their paid services. Helping a hero. Org donates cash funds and oversees the project. The veteran is required to take out a minimum 50,000 mortgage on the home plus contribute the proceeds of their va grant for which most of the veterans are eligible. For more information, see schedule o the actual mortgage amount is determined at the end of the building process and is based on the minimum required 50,000 veteran investment, plus any upgrades selected by the veteran over the maximum 100,000 cash contribution by the organization and any excess cost of land. Each home is built to address the special adaptation standards for the veteran who will live in the home and is designed to ensure maximum independence, within budget constraints. The home is recorded at cost plus any in kind donations from the builder or other sources. During 2014 there were 543,930 of in kind donations that are added to the cost of homes under construction during 2014. To date, the organization has awarded 113 homes in 22 states. The organization conducts a groundbreaking ceremony before the construction of a new home for the wounded warrior. The ceremony allows the organization to introduce the wounded warrior and his, or her, family to the community, educate the community about the needs of the wounded warrior, educate other businesses about the opportunity for giving back to wounded warriors, and honor the wounded warrior for his or her service. The organization has a welcome home ceremony when the home is completed and the wounded hero is ready to move in. The ceremony allows the organization to thank all the vendors who have donated time or products to the home as well as to educate the community about the adaptation needs that this wounded hero has as a result of his or her permanent injuries.

marriage retreats, caregiver programs, financial education - the wounded heroes and their families often face an uphill battle with their marriages as they transition from the military back into civilian life. The divorce rate is an average of 85% among the most severely wounded. The organization is committed to equipping these families to enhance their communication skills and work through these crisis issues so that they can rebuild their marriages, based on the new normal they now face. Over 40 families have participated in the retreats, webinars, and crisis communication support for more information, see schedule o the caregivers, primarily spouses and parents, face the 24/7 day to day challenges of supporting our wounded warriors. They are often overlooked and unappreciated. The organization organizes and offers retreats that provide encouragement, fun, pampering, and camaraderie for these care- givers. Over 50 caregivers participated in these programs during 2014. The wounded warriors have often been in the military since high school and do not know what it takes to sustain a household in the civilian world. The organization helps them develop a budget and make better financial decisions. Emergency needs and recreation support - the organization provides ongoing support for wounded warriors and their families, with priority given to home recipients. This support includes financial support, sports events, fishing and hunting outings, rodeos, operation merry christmas, and others. Over 300 wounded warriors receive assistance.

HAH is more than just an organization, they are our family. HAH builds homes for Heroes and their families such as ourselves but HAH does so much more than that; you have to look at the whole picture especially when dealing with all the mixed media out there. There are two sides to every story. Did they mention the dinners, shoots, tours, family functions, hunts we all get to experience together? Did they mention how the staff and volunteers at HAH have completely dedicated their lives to this cause? Did they mention they have sleepless nights getting everything ready for the events? What about the marriage counseling that HAH has set up for us with a Volunteer (who flies cross county several times a year to be with us and does individual sessions with Gomeeting)? HAH does all this because they care; It is for their family. And frankly, we are proud to be a part of the HAH family.

So many veterans have benefited from this organization. If you’re ever thinking about donating to a nonprofit, this one is solid. Our veterans need so much help and it’s easy to forget that the reason we can protest, do what we want on social media, and enjoy all the freedoms under our US constitution is because of the sacrifices made by veterans! Let’s help them this time.

Volunteering with Helping A Hero is a joy beyond words! Each hero I have the honor of meeting, interacting with and hearing their story is an incredible blessing. One of the many benefits observed is as each hero receives their home and integrates into the community, is the way the community embraces them and their home becomes a central place to gather. This gives the hero and his or her family a sense of belonging rather than living in a world of isolation, feeling like they don’t fit in. Helping a Hero is a life changing gift to each hero and the hero a treasured gift to all they meet!

Volunteering for Helping a Hero Organization has been both an honor and a privilege. As a Marine veteran, I hold a special place for our wounded warriors. Many have sacrificed so much to assure our country continues to excel, but at times war veteran’s efforts and lost go unappreciated. Helping A Hero doesn’t forget or underappreciate our veterans.

This organization has done a great job in providing specialized housing for those special needs veterans who have lost limbs and been severely injured to protect us here at home in the fight against those forces of terrorism. I have made donations to this group for the past several years and I don't make donations to any organization where I cannot see most of my money going to the people an organization says it is helping. This non-profit is one of those great groups I have that kind of faith in.

Helping a Hero is a very accountable charity and its audit shows over 80 cents of every donation goes to the bottom line. I was impressed that they are accredited by the Better Business Bureau. The BBB has a very stringent 20 point review process and there are only less than 100 charities in the Houston area with the BBB seal. Hats off to Helping a Hero for going the extra mile so donors know their money is well invested.

The United States Army has been supporting many of the Helping A Hero events that have occurred since the organization's inception at multiple events throughout the country.

We have sent Soldier volunteers to help these Heroes following their home presentations to help with their needs. This organization provides an unbelievable community service that ties both the community and the federal, state and local government together in one effort.

There are normally very few uniformed military at these events and that part is sad, since these Heroes have given so much. The U.S. Army is committed to these heroes and we make every effort to attend groundbreaking or home dedications, whenever feasible and our heroes really appreciate seeing military there to support them. Often, there will be a Soldier or two who served on the mission they were injured on and this means the world to them.

Helping A Hero is a tremendous organization that we will continue to support wherever the call.

The U.S. Army Reserve Ambassador and Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army for east Texas also attends when their calendars permit.

In a world that can seem crowded with good causes, Helping a Hero truly shows how to stay focused on the goal of helping veterans and their family.. Probably the best thing is that their track record and personal involvement means that the project WILL get done and done right. Working with them has truly been educational and inspiring.

I've been involved with Helping Hero for about 5 years and have been nothing but impressed. I've been involved in the ground breaking for a home for a local vet and then in the presentation of that home later. The local volunteers are exceptional, and their fund raising projects have been handled flawlessly. The leadership at the national level is nothing short of outstanding, and the fact that $.82 of every dollar donated goes to the vets is testament to the fact this is a first class and above-the-board organization. I strongly recommend Helping a Hero for anyone's volunteering or donation plans. There are numerous organizations in the country dedicated to taking care of our wounded vets, but Helping a Hero ranks at the top of the list. Your volunteer talents and your monetary support for Helping a Hero will NOT be wasted. They are an absolutely First Rate organization.

HelpingaHero.org is a family. In just a few days, the first home recipient, PFC Kenny Adams, USA (Ret) will complete his commitment to live in his beautiful $300,000 home for 10 years. While the home equity was always in his name, he couldn't borrow against it for the 10 years beyond his original mortgage of $50,000 that represented his obligation to the home. This 10 year agreement also kept him from losing his home or the equity in a divorce. Our wounded warriors need our support. Building an accessible home tailored to their needs is an important first step. And encouraging them as they continue their journey on their road to recovery, is important too. Helping a Hero builds amazing homes, and does marriage retreats, caregiver retreats, hunting and fishing trips, Operation Merry Christmas, and so much more.

As a former Board member of this charity, I encourage you to support Helping a Hero and help this charity build more homes for wounded warriors. Helping a Hero is a transparent and accountable charity and was certified in February 2015 by the Better Business Bureau as a transparent and accountable charity.

Helping a Hero identifies the wounded warrior, raises the funds for the home, then assembles the build team, designs the adapted floorplan to meet the needs of the wounded warrior, works with the builder to secure in kind labor and material donations and builds the home as agreed and approved by the wounded warrior.
