Mission: Hedgebrook supports visionary women writers whose stories and ideas shape our culture now and for generations to come.

Programs: Writers in residency: hedgebrook is one of the few artist residencies in the world dedicated to supporting the work of women writers exclusively. Situated on whidbey island, 35 miles north of seattle, hedgebrook hosts women writers for fully funded residencies of two to six weeks. Writers are chosen through a competitive international selection process. Six to seven writers are in residence at a time, each housed in a handcrafted cottage, with meals prepared from hedgebrook's organic garden. The writers in residence program is hedgebrook's core program, supporting the residencies of 40-50 writers a year. 2013 marked the 25th year of hedgebrook's residency program, that has produced a global alumnae community of more than 1,500 writers.

master class retreats: a series of week-long writing workshops that combine hedgebrook's unique retreat experience with the opportunity for writers to study and be in residence with a master teacher. Workshops are offered in a diversity of genres, and are focused on various aspects of the writing craft. Six or seven participants receive instruction, group feedback and one-on-one sessions with the instructor, as well as retreat time.

hedgebrook women playwrights festival (hwpf): celebrates the work of women writing for the theatre. Since the festival's inauguration in 1998, the hwpf has played an important role in the genesis and development of more than 50 new plays by women. Alumnae of the festival include recipients of the pulitzer prize, tony and obie awards, and macarthur fellows. Each year, four or five playwrights are selected from a competitive pool of writers nominated by prominent theatre professionals. The festival kicks off with a "pre-retreat" weekend when plays are read aloud and discussed with a community of theatre professionals. A two-week residency at hedgebrook follows, during which the playwrights work with resident and guest dramaturgs to develop their plays. The festival culminates in public presentations at whidbey island center for the arts and seattle rep theatre.

songwriters residency: an annual ten day residency for six female songwriters, working in a diversity of genres, selected by a panel of people in the music industry; vortext/salons: in a variety of formats, from one day to a weekend, writing workshops in various genres take place at the retreat or in partnership with seattle organizations.
