I’m a volunteer photographer at Hearts and Horses. I recently lost my daughter to cancer which has left me heart broken. My work here as a photographer gives me a sense of purpose and the opportunity to contribute to a cause that promotes healing and hope. Documenting the progress and positive experiences of participants can be incredibly fulfilling, helping me find meaning and direction in the midst of my grief. This process of documenting moments of connection and healing is cathartic, providing a sense of purpose and a way to honor my daughter's memory. But most of all, my work here connects me with a community of staff, volunteers, and participants who understand the challenges of grief. This supportive network offers me empathy, understanding, and companionship, which are crucial for my emotional healing.

I volunteer at Hearts & Horses and am impressed every time I’m there how much the instructors and the horses change the lives of those they serve. I work with a little boy who in just a few months has evolved so beautifully it brings tears to my eyes. Hearts and Horses is definitely one of the top organizations I’ve been involved with.

I have over 17 years of experience volunteering at another high quality therapeutic riding center, and I just started at Hearts and Horses this year. This place is beyond impressive. All staff is friendly and helpful, and the riders are a joy to work with. The training they provide volunteers is thoughtful and effective. I’ve been very touched by their willingness to help every one participate, even providing individual training abs shadowing opportunities. Their attention to detail is clear, and their facilities are top-notch. I can’t recommend this place enough.

My son is autistic and adhd. We started off in a study and the change I saw in in him was dramatic. He was calmer more able to handle his emotions etc. We were on the waitlist for actual programs during that study. When his name came up he was excited to go spend more time with the horses. Jordan has been the most amazing person with Rowen taking time to understand how he works and modifies her lessons accordingly. He has made way more progress with the horse therapy than traditional therapy. I highly recommend it to anyone with asd kids who love animals!

In the past I've avoided volunteering. The biggest deterrents: organizations were too disorganized, lacked clear directions, lacked clear communication and more. That all changed with Hearts & Horses. No rinky-dink operation here. This is a world-class equine therapy barn, impeccably clean, wonderfully organized and loaded with professionals and incredible mammals--four-legged and two-legged. If you need a reminder that goodness thrives in this world, look no further than Hearts & Horses. From the minute you enter the main building, you feel at home. Friendly folks abound. From the minute you apply to volunteer, you follow a clear path to rewarding engagement whether you are a paid employee, a client, or a volunteer. Ample training is offered (and required) for all volunteers. Patient instructors instill confidence. It's that constant encouraging that builds confidence in all who participate--staff, clientele, animals and volunteers--at Hearts & Horses. But beyond praise and good feelings, you'll find proof in science-based studies. The multi-faceted Equine therapy programs offered at Hearts & Horses work. Great non-profit is an understatement.

I've been a volunteer with Hearts & Horses since April of this year, and my experience has been nothing short of exceptional. The facilities are beautiful, and my Friday morning shifts working with the Barn Team (best people ever!) are Zen-like. Truly.

The H&H staff is deeply committed to the health and wellness of these magnificent horses and the wonderful people benefiting from their therapeutic abilities. More, they routinely express their gratitude to the many volunteers who share in realizing the H&H mission. Huge shout out to Trudy and Mike (two staff I work alongside most often).

I've invested time volunteering for different organizations throughout my adult life, and my commitment to H&H has absolutely been one of the most rewarding.

My senior year of college at Colorado State University, I was looking for an internship. I had a couple options but as soon as I stepped through the doors at Hearts & Horses I knew it was where I was supposed to be. The volunteers and the staff always greeted me with the biggest smiles and it was so clear from day one that the work they do there is tremendously meaningful. I wanted to find purpose in my internship and I could not have found a place that cares more about their community, both humans and animals. No matter where I go in life I know that Hearts & Horses will always be a part of my being. My most sincere thank you for this place, the people, and the animals for changing my life for the better.

Hearts & Horses is a magical place of belonging and healing for riders, volunteers and instructors alike. Horses are very intuitive and they just seem to know when a rider needs their love and support and each of them provide that healing in their own special ways. It is an amazing and beautiful thing to witness. One of my riders is extremely happy when he arrives each week for class; he waves his hands in the air, claps and has a huge smile on his face. At the end of every class, he wraps his arms around the horse's neck to thank her & to show her how much he loves her. I also had the privilege of watching a 99 year-old rider trot on his horse for the first time in many years and witness the tears in his eyes because he was happy and thankful for the memories. Volunteering at Hearts & Horses is an absolute privilege and joy for me.

The people, the programs, the herd, and the facility at Hearts & Horses is absolutely amazing! Excellent volunteer training program with hundreds of volunteers interacting with families, riders, staff, and equine's. It is amazing to see how well-organized and choreographed each activity and interaction is. Extreme care is taken with riders of all walks of life needing special services to help with a large variety of diagnoses. Hearts & Horses is an amazing, caring equine and human therapy program, which helps veterans suffering from PTSD, children and adults, who have physical and mental challenges, seniors, with memory care issues and children-at-risk of violence. In addition to those individuals, Hearts & Horses helps horses, who need a good home, good nutrition and a large, equine and human family to love them. Finally, Hearts & Horses, while helping all of those, helps its volunteers to not only give back, but to receive the love, encouragement and support that is cultivated and encouraged in every program, staff member, volunteer, student and visitor.

Recently I had the opportunity to work with a new population. Veterans. Volunteering at Hearts & Horses is one of the best things I have ever done. Like most volunteers, I wanted to find an organization where I could make a difference. But I also wanted to be part of a community of other dedicated volunteers, and to work in an organization effectively managed to reach its goals. I've found both, and much more, at Hearts & Horses.

Effectively managing an organization using horses to help people facing enormous life challenges is a complex and difficult task. The staff at H&H are superb. Their knowledge, skill, and dedication to their riders is amazing. Volunteers and staff work together as a team to help riders make changes in their lives which many might think were impossible.

The "impossible" seems to happen at H&H on almost a weekly basis. I am very grateful to be part of an organization so successful at making a difference for so many people.

Our sweet girl Zoie has been a rider at Hearts and Horses for 4 years now. She cannot walk, she is non-verbal, tube fed, and fully reliant on others to care for her. As her caregiver I wasn’t sure how riding a horse would work for her. It turns out, that it is her favorite, most beneficial therapy thanks to the hard-working staff, volunteers, and horses at Hearts and Horses! When Zoie gets to go ride her horse on Tuesdays, she is happy, joyful, and very vocal. She loves it. With one of the largest volunteer programs in Larimer County, we do our best to listen and take into consideration all feedback from our community. Our policies and procedures are in place to keep the herd safe and well supported with so many people coming to help with their care. We hope that you give us a chance to resolve the situation as we want everyone's experiences at Hearts & Horses to be positive for our volunteers, our riders, the herd, staff and everyone that comes to the ranch.

I am Rich Kenney, and my association with Hearts & Horses started in August 2018, when I took my wife, Peggy, to an orientation session, because she had been diagnosed with dementia the year before. Peggy was also born with an orthopedic condition - achondroplasia - which, for those not familiar with that condition, is a form of dwarfism. Peggy's dementia was my primary reason for my wanting to see if the programs at Hearts & Horses could benefit her, but I was also hoping that there could also be a benefit from a physical standpoint. You see, the dementia had taken a toll on Peggy's ability to be ambulatory, and I was also hoping that being astride a horse would help Peggy to strengthen core muscle groups and improve her posture.

Soon after the orientation, Peggy was invited to have a riding evaluation, so I made sure she had the necessary clothing to take part. She rode "Romeo" for her evaluation, and, because his girth was a little bit too much for Peggy, it was not the best ride for her. However, the staff wanted Peggy to be part of the "Riding In The Moment" program (for Alzheimer's/dementia participants), and they said they would do what they could to accommodate Peggy. And, one of Peggy's "side walkers", Dave Erbeck, came up to me in the parking lot after the evaluation and said that he would love to be part of Peggy's team. Watching from the sidelines, I saw that he had a good rapport with Peggy, so I told him that would be fine with me.

So, a couple of months later, Peggy started the first of her sessions on a Wednesday afternoon in the Kroh Arena, and she was assigned the sweetest donkey, "Raymond" as her equine companion. "Raymond" was narrower in girth than "Romeo", and that seemed to work out well for Peggy from a physical standpoint. Initially, I still observed Peggy's sessions from the sidelines, but then I was asked if I wanted to be one of Peggy's "side walkers" (I believe) starting in 2019. I immediately accepted! It was nice to be part of "Team Peggy", and all of us who were part of that team worked well together, and, while there were challenges some days, we had fun, and Peggy seemed to enjoy both the riding and social aspects of being in the program, both of which had a definite benefit for her. And we were asked to participate in another Alzheimer's/dementia program headed up by Becca Lassell from Colorado State University (CSU), which kept intact the Wednesday riding sessions and also added a session on Friday mornings in which riders could spend time grooming their equine companions before their rides. (Additionally, we would meet with Becca at our house, where Becca would ask questions concerning the sessions, and would do some testing with Peggy.)

For some reason, "Raymond" felt so comfortable around Peggy, and he would allow Peggy to leave a very noticeable lipstick imprint on the white of his snout. That was a weekly event, and a big attraction for the other riders, volunteers and staff to see! Sadly, in late-September 2019, "Raymond" died suddenly and that was a sad day for us all! After that Peggy rode "Lass" (another sweet donkey), and the staff wanted to try Peggy on a Fjord pony, "Fiona", and her current and latest equine companion "Cinnamon Girl", a sweet Haflinger mare. "Cinnamon Girl" has worked out well, and she's also very comfortable with Peggy, so much so that Peggy can kiss her on the snout and leave a lipstick imprint, too! And, "Cinnamon Girl" would also likely be found resting her head in Peggy's lap (with Peggy in her wheelchair) during the grooming sessions, which carried through from the CSU program.

Where Peggy's concerned, the programs at Hearts & Horses have been a "godsend" and have certainly slowed the progress of Peggy's dementia. And, while Peggy has always had a sweetness about her, she comes alive when at Hearts & Horses - smiling, laughing, communicating as best as she can with everyone, and so enjoying her time with those equines who really do bring her joy, and she gives it back to them!

For myself, of course, Peggy's sessions are of the utmost importance, but I have my own moments where Hearts & Horses fills me with joy and gives me my time to work with other volunteers in a different capacity than I do with Peggy. There is the Barn Team, and I have also volunteered with programs for the "at-risk" school kids. It's extremely gratifying to give of my time to the organization in the ways that I do, and that's because they have done so much not only for Peggy, but also for me, and I feel I must "pay it forward". And, I have made some wonderful friendships with staff and volunteers, as well as enjoying my moments with the equines. I had not had much experience with horses prior to my time at Hearts & Horses, but I've learned how to better make them feel at ease and to better learn how to handle them. There's just something amazing about those beautiful animals!

My wife Peggy (who has dementia) has been a participant in the "Riding In The Moment" classes for almost a year now, and, all I can say is, it's been wonderful to see her interaction with both her animal partner and the staff she normally works with! While it's sometimes hard for her to communicate verbally, the staff all keep her upbeat and make it a joyous experience for her every time she's there. And, for over half of this first year, I've been part of Peggy's team and have also been pursuing further volunteer activities with "Hearts & Horses".

I can only stay that it's been a "godsend" to have such an amazing non-profit in Loveland to make dealing with dementia such a pleasant experience! And, "Hearts & Horses" has also hosted some special studies and lectures on the topic of dementia which have been invaluable to me, as well. Dementia can be a very cruel affliction to deal with, but "Hearts & Horses" has also shown that there can be a way of dealing with it and still have "quality of life"! To me, that's a most amazing discovery!

I have been blessed to provide therapy services for children and adults utilizing the movement of the horse as the therapeutic tool for the past 10 years at Hearts and Horses, Inc. For most of them, therapy has been a way of life since they were very young. Watching them experience normal movement on the back of the horse, engaging all the sensory systems, and enjoying themselves in a therapeutic environment with smiles and laughter is the most heart warming thing you will ever see. In many ways, it's therapy for me as well as my clients. I could not think of a better job than this!

Hi, my name is Tina. Hearts and Horses have been part of my life for over 17 years. I'm a Mom of three boys. My oldest son took riding lessons at H&H's. They taught him how to take care of the horse, not only riding. My twins started riding at the age of two. They were premature, over three months early. They weighed .two pounds each. Riding really brought out Matthew's speech. Andrew has Cerebral Palsy. He has rode throughout his life, 16 years. He had to stop for surgeries and recovery. He has developed core strength and balance. He is able to let go of his walker for a few seconds and actually stand on his own. I credit it to surgery, physical therapy and hippo therapy at Hearts and Horses. He works with a wonderful occupational therapist. The bond between the horses and the riders is heartwarming. I can't thank H&H's enough. The staff and volunteers are wonderfully...
God Bless..

I have been a volunteer with Hearts and Horses for almost 8 years and it has been the most rewarding experience of my life! My favorite program to help with is the Changing Leads program for at risk youth. The staff is so well trained to work with these kiddos and the program they've put together with the local school districts and other agencies is just amazing. Each class provides us with the ability to see how much the horses can help the students feel accepted and cared for and I'm proud to be a small part of that. All of the programs at Hearts and Horses are special. The instructors and staff are passionate about what they do and it shows! As volunteers, we are trained in any areas that we need help with and are acknowledged for our roles and contributions.

I have been a volunteer at Hearts and Horses since 2011 and it has been the most rewarding thing I've ever done. I have helped in a wide range of their classes, but my passion has been the Changing Leads Program for At Risk Youth. The staff is so dedicated to providing the best experience for these kids and works hard to address their individual needs. The ways that these horses reach out to our kiddos is just miraculous and the changes we see in the kids throughout their time there is amazing. The kids themselves share with us how much they gain in all aspects ... confidence building, team building, having someone to care for and to take care of. Oftentimes, they come to class in a bad mood and their horse brings them back to a good place. There have been many incidences over the years that the horses and kids have us in tears from just being able to observe their interactions and progress together. Hearts and Horses is a blessing to all the riders, the volunteers and our community. My husband and I do whatever we can to support them.

I walked into the Larimer County Fairgrounds building in 1996. I met Peggy Stewart at the booth for Hearts and Horses. We talked for awhile. I signed up as a volunteer.

To my absolute joy, I became a horse leader, became part of the board, totally enjoyed manning the booth at events, organized events, and had my own horse in the program for a time.

One of my favorite memories:
One young boy came into the program. He couldn't look up at anyone and definitely couldn't talk to anyone. He clung to his family and it was difficult to go to anyone. But he came every time and participated in class the best he could. However by the end the session he was talking to everyone, looking them in the eye and laughing during his class!! Then I saw him hugging the staff on his way out of the barn.

This organization has grown to help so many different groups of people. I truly have enjoyed watching it grow.

The calm and love I feel when I drive onto the ranch is so palpable in my own heart it sometimes brings tears to my eyes.

This world is a better place because of Hearts and Horses.

I began my time with Hearts and Horses as an intern, and was quickly made to feel at home by the staff, volunteers, riders and horses. I now go to work every day truly excited by what I do and the people that I get to share my day with. The staff is not only highly qualified and professional, but also deeply passionate about their work, spending hours outside of their time at the ranch trying to figure out what is best for their riders and horses. The volunteers are so dedicated to the horses and riders that sometimes I have to stop and remind myself that they don't need to be out here cleaning stalls - they make the choice to help each and every day and for that I am so grateful. I work with brand new volunteers, jumping in even though they still aren't quite sure where they'll find their role, and volunteers who have been with the same riders for over 5 years, and all of them bring joy, energy and love to the property. Watching my riders progress both in the riding skills and towards their personal goals is incredible, and I feel very lucky to have the horses, volunteers and other supports that I need to set them up for success. Something very special can happen when you put a person on a horse - suddenly some of the obstacles in the real world don't matter quite as much - and, at Hearts and Horses, I have the privilege of seeing this magic every day.

Every rider is encouraged, challenged, and yet still kept safe. I have yet to meet a less-than-enthusiastic volunteer and every staff member is a dedicated, highly experienced expert in their field. Our family has been riding and volunteering with H&H for over 3 years now and we look forward to our time at the barn, in the arena, and on the trail. I particularly have appreciated the ways in which H&H has encouraged every member of our family to ride, even creating special all-ages all-abilities classes for us with a great, PATH-certified therapist/instructor so that our whole family can enjoy horseback riding together.

A veteran said it in a review of the program at H & H to address their physical and mental challenges and socialization difficulties after returning from service, "When I saw the staff it was like they were saying alright we are family and there is no judgment here, we all know what can be the physical and mental challenges carried by an individuals and what it is like to not be able to enjoy who you are and we work to remove those challenges and to build independence and a freedom and enjoyment of life that comes from that in small steps "...and there is not only support from the staff and volunteers but others involved and around you. In the Vets case it was other vets who understood as it is with young people, teens at risk and even elders with limited capacity to remember and move about with ease.
The strength of this organization is not only the people but the use of horses which do not judge either but give unconditional respect and support and bonding.
This is why the program has so many life-long supporters and friends as extended family and a place where you hear laughter and enjoyment from those they serve and those who give the care who get to enjoy the successes right along with them.
Hearts and Horses brings unbelievable outcomes, laughter, fun and life friendships.

Before I came to Loveland I was looking up Therapeutic Riding Centres as I was interested in them and the possibility of one being accessible for me to perhaps visit while I was here. It was meant to be and it has been one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. It has moved me to tears, made me laugh and inspired me to believe that anything you want to achieve is possible. From the wonderful horses, dedicated staff/volunteers, and phenomenal riders it is a joy to be able to be involved there for a few days each week and it has definitely enriched my stay here in the US.

I have been with this organization for over six years. The participants who are helped grow by leaps and bounds! Volunteers are also touched by the love and compassion that is shared here. My time here is very much appreciated and it keeps me coming back!
