STRONG Tiger King vibes. Nancy is a total Carole Baskin. She was so stuck up about people who breed their dogs and yet here she is doing the same thing and advertising it on the rescues Facebook page. She also breeds bangle cats. I foolishly went to volunteer and was completely traumatized by the experience. I also noticed after the fact, when I went back to the rescues Facebook page (ran by Nancy) that some of the photos ARE NOT even their photos. They have LITERALLY screenshot other rescues photos and posted them as their own. This organization is very deceiving and in my opinion doesn’t care about the animals. While I was at the rescue I heard a kitten mowing loudly and crying for the entire two hours I was there. When young kittens meow like that it’s because they are hungry. Nancy didn’t even pay any attention to the kittens cries. While I was there she also yelled at a poor dog she had caged that she was watching for someone. I would never leave my animals with her. I asked Nancy multiple times HOW she gets these animals such as the rare horses and she danced around the question and ultimately said “every animal has its story” so she never gave me a direct answer. My gut was screaming that she is shady and a scammer and I got a really bad feeling while I was at her rescue. Save your money and time and volunteer elsewhere it will be better utilized. And lastly, Nancy and her boyfriend made me and my friend very uncomfortable. Right when we pulled into the rescue they closed the gate and pad locked it behind us. There is no excuse for that. We also had an appointment and when we arrived she was cooking dinner for herself and her boyfriend. Then proceeded to have a sit down dinner while me and my friend awkwardly sat there and watched them eat... for over an hour. Long story short she never gave us a tour, we never got to see ANY of the animals. We sat at her trailer porch kitchen and listened to her talk about HERSELF for two hours, her accomplishments, her book, her superior understanding of animals and how to train them. Total narcissist. While she was eating her dinner the hound dog she had in a cage was whining and she yelled at it several times. He was in a metal crate (no bed or padding) and he had flies all over his eyes and face and mouth, and was panting. It was disturbing. Then she proceeded to say she was going to take it out and walked it off the porch. I thought that’s better for that poor dog. When I finally left I saw where the dog was. This woman literally took it from the crate and moved him to rope tie him with only enough room to sit stand and lay down. It was a 104 degree day. He was in direct sun in the middle of the driveway. No shade. No tree coverage. Nothing. He had been like that for an hour. It broke my heart. She is a horrible human being. She saw dollar signs when me and my friend drove in that day and disregarded the safety of a dog bc she was distracted by trying to get us to open our wallets.

Again do not waste your time with this organization or stroke Nancy’s ego. There are much better more deserving rescues in town.

I have dedicated my life to animals and donated many years to caring, loving and volunteering. ...

I visited this facility 2 years ago looking for a large animal to adopt. Inside a barn were cages filled with bangled kittens. There were many cages and the kittens were reaching out and calling for attention. The owner said that she breeds to raise money for the facility. About a year later I spoke to her again (she was asking for donations ) and I asked if she was still breeding cats. She asked why and when I told her I didn't like the condition that I saw them kept in and I wouldn't make a donation. There was a back and forth . She stated that her cat rescue facility passes inspection but she would not address the condition of the cats in the barn. She kept changing the subject and challenging me. She initiated all of this contact (asking for a donation, then why i wouldnt make one, then insiting i defend my decision )

She talked about her cat facility passing inspection and getting high marks. It wasn't the barn or the cats for sell that she was talking about and she kept avoiding that issue.

A week ago my mom was in Rite Aid (here in town) she had her dog with her and a man began a conversation with her. He started talking about animals. His conversation went to his connection (a personal relationship ) to this facility and he began talking about cats. He spoke of cats kept in cages in the barn. He said he felt bad for them that they don't get out.

It's clear the practice is continuing. I would to see a better condition for all the animals, including ones being sold. I plan to follow up on this.

I first came to Hearts & Hands to attend Friendship Training with Nancy Nunke, the Zebra Whisperer who shares her knowledge of the ‘ultimate equine’, the zebra during an amazing 3-day clinic. She teaches communication and relationship skills for use with zebras or any other equine.
But I learned and found so much more there. It is a beautiful, magical place where many animals reside after being rescued from severe abuse, neglect, and abandonment. They have been rehabilitated with traditional and non-traditional medicine, top quality nutrition, and countless hours in the arms of dedicated staff and volunteers. Animals regain trust in humankind by realizing that they are now loved, and their abuse is over. Many have ongoing physical and psychological needs and have a forever home with H&H.
Hearts & Hands is also home to endangered animals such as Przewalski’s (Wild Mongolian) horses, several species of zebras and Caspian horses, as well as miniature donkeys and horses, zorses, zonkeys, mini-zebu cows, Nubian goats, camels, chickens, dogs, cats, exotic birds, tortoises, rabbits, and any other species that need care.
H&H believes that everyone deserves a chance at life regardless if they are blind, crippled, deformed, sick, wounded, or just old. Because many of the animals at H&H experienced severe abuse and neglect, their treatment and care is extremely expensive. But it is worth it to see them happy - watching their eyes light up, cuddling in your lap, playing with new life and new hope.
Once rehabilitated, many animals at H&H become ambassadors, teaching young and old about the gifts we receive from these precious beings.

Hearts & Hands Animal Rescue in Ramona, California. What a beautiful place. I have been volunteering there for two years now, documenting their efforts with my camera to help promote their cause. Although billed as an equine rescue, Hearts & Hands doesn't turn away any animal in need of shelter. Besides horse, donkeys and zebras, there are camels, goats, dogs, cats and many types of birds all living happily together in an awesome, sharing environment.
In my short time there, I not only have learned about the care and training of horses and zebras, but also have learned how such a diverse group of animals can get along so well together. A great lesson in life for us all.
Their goal of finding forever homes for these animals while housing them at the ranch is inspiring. I've even taken in a couple of dogs to foster to ease their burden. I feel lucky and privileged to be a part of it all.

I met Nancy Nunke, the Executive Director of HHAR, while I was looking for a mule trainer. I had just retired and wanted to have a better relationship with my mule, Abigail. Not only did Nancy improve my relationship with Abigail, she improved my relationship with life. She is an excellent animal trainer who shows you how to utilize your animal training with people. She has a heart of gold and is amazing with the animals. She doesn't know the meaning of giving up - she fights for the animals to the end, and I have the highest respect for her.

The rescue is a place of miracles. Animals come in that are starving, sick, and beaten down, and they are brought back to health and found a forever home. The rescue is also used to show people who have had similar problems in their lives that they can have a future too. By connecting with the animals, they come out of themselves and into the world. It is a miracle.

Thank God for this rescue - it truly makes a difference in the lives of the rescue animals and those who visit or have the opportunity to work at the ranch.

No explanation can describe how wonderful this ranch is unless you visit in person. I am always in awe when I come into the ranch, and can only begin to paint a picture. I have returned every weekend since my very first visit. Nancy Nunke is gifted in so many ways and dedicated to each and every animal to personally see that they are given the loving care they deserve. Unfortunately, too many animals around the world are put to sleep, because there are not enough Nancy's in the world. She works 18+ hours a day, including her "flashlight check" at night. I am drawn to this place because I am constantly learning new things, and especially because seeing how hard they work here has truly given me hope for humanity and opened my eyes to how much one person can accomplish in a day. Each person at the Ranch works tirelessly to care for these precious animals. Learning the "friendship dance" and witnessing Nancy tame wild animals without any force whatsoever, was inspiring. This is the cleanest ranch I have ever seen..their hard work shows. If the animals could speak, they would clearly have praises of gratitude for their friends that give them undying help. I have never seen someone communicate with animals the way Nancy does. Everything she does with the equine is done with purpose and meaning, and there is no doubt in my mind that she is clearly communicating with them in their own language. Nancy's skill set is incredible and definitely contributes to each animal's healing and recovery. This ranch is for an excellent cause and without it, the number of zebras left on earth would be in jeopardy.

I have been a volunteer board member for this animal rescue for four years. This is a true no-kill rescue. The animals are all rehabilitated whether or not they are considered or will be considered adoptable. All that are adoptable are found qualified and trained new loving families. Those that are considered unadoptable due to age, injury, neglect, or abuse are kept at the facility indefinitely, given much love and attention, re-training, and enrichment. These animals then share their stories of determination and recovery to assist humans with their wellness goals who have had similar circumstances or events in their lives. The give back or pay it forward of these animals is a most amazing thing to experience on a daily basis at Hearts & Hands. Visitors are welcomed by appointment. The expansion of the Education and Wellness Center is near completion. Most people who visit find the best word to describe this unique rescue is "magical". The programs include rescuing local domestic animals of any variety, with the majority being horses, donkeys, mules; rescuing zebras of all three species and Przewalksi's horses, working with camels to provide owners with a better and humane way of training them, providing equine training clinics with Nancy Nunke's Friendship Training techniques and principles, and sharing all this with the public and human charity organizations to assist in wellness.
