Mission: Just imagine being told your child may not survive until his or her next birthday because needed surgery, routine elsewhere in the world, is not available in your country. Families face this frightening diagnosis everyday. An astonishing 93% of the world?s population has no access to cardiac surgery (American Association of Thoracic Surgery).HeartGift's target audience is children born with congenital heart defects (primarily Atrial Septal Defect, Ventricular Septal Defect, Tetralogy of Fallot and Coarctation of the Aorta) in developing countries. These children must have no other access to the medical services necessary to save their life; without surgery some of these children have only a few months to live. Selection criteria include that the child be 14 years old or younger, have no chromosomal abnormalities, and suffer from a bi-ventricular condition that can be repaired with one surgery. This ensures we uphold our ethical responsibility to serve children who will live healthy, normal lives after one surgery given the child returns home to a developing country with little or no access to continued medical treatment.
Programs: Provides lifesaving heart surgery to children from around the world where specialized medical treatment is either scarce or nonexistent. Major program costs include the cost of the medical treatments and the transport and care costs for the children and their family during treatment. Non-cash related donations of medical services, medical facilities, and other services totaled approximately $7,404,245 in 2017. Beginning in 2017, the organization provided international funding for physicians traveling to bolivia to perform hospital services. The funding was to cover expenses for travel, hotel, and medical equipment.
