I have been volunteering with Heart of the Valley since 2013. I began as a friendly visitor and got back far more than I put in as a volunteer. In fact, I fell in love with HOV's mission so much I became a board member in 2015. I love hearing seniors' stories, sympathizing with their frustrations and sorrows, and just lending an open ear and heart. I've also done light yardwork, and took a widowed, 90-something senior to lunch on Christmas so she wouldn't be alone, which was tons of fun, even if it was difficult to find an open restaurant on Christmas Day :). The seniors are always so grateful for any small amount of help you give, and the thank yous you get brighten your day. The best volunteer experience I've had is playing "Santa" at Christmas time, delivering donated gifts to seniors. They are always so appreciative, and for many, Heart of the Valley's donated gifts are the only gifts they will receive. The seniors are so grateful for the smallest gesture, and have fascinating stories about life during the Depression, WW 2, and life in the Valley before the tech boom. Plus, the services are so needed; paratransit can be difficult to use, and light handiwork and yardwork saves seniors, many of whom are low-income, from having to hire someone. All in all, the only downside to HOV I would say is that it is not in every community. I am proud and honored to be a HOV volunteer.
Heart of the Valley has been doing amazing work keeping Seniors independent in their own homes. A great resource for any senior who need s a little help with home maintenance, shopping, doctor/vet visits, organization or anything you can come up with. Heart of the Valley has wonderful, helpful volunteers you can count on.
